PROGRAM:

Chris Owens of Prairie Independent Living Resource Center appeared in support of Disability Mentoring Day. This event is designed to bring awareness of the need for employment for persons with disabilities. The unemployment rate for the disabled is 70%.

Mentors, persons of assorted occupations, are matched with mentees, persons with disabilities, to experience the daily activities of those particular positions. Fifty-five individuals will participate in this year’s event. AMBUCS may assist with Disability Mentoring Day by volunteering as mentors, by donating food for the breakfast and reception or by providing transportation for the mentees. Disability Mentoring Day is October 19th.

PROGRAM:

Brenda Janda introduced Stephanie Guthrie, a fellow AMBUC, as our program.

Stephanie and her husband operate Sundance Farm, which provides equestrian activities for the “differently-abled. The farm includes 50 head of mini and draft horses. Standing 30 inches tall, minis are house broken and wear sneakers while indoors.

Minis are used as companions and as teams for pulling carriages equipped with lifts. For those with special needs, the minis allow recreation for individuals who are unable to ride a horse. The minis also provide social interaction because of their gentle nature and being eye level with persons in wheelchairs. In addition to meeting the needs of the differently-abled, the horses and carriages are available for weddings, parades and for promotion of special events.

Stephanie invites everyone to visit the operation, located 5 miles north of 30th Street, at 264 Apache Road, Inman, Kansas. Further information may be obtained at their website, www.sundancefarm.org. If you are interested in assisting with these activities, please contact Stephanie.

GUESTS

Kent Clingenpeel and Rick Kerr candidates for Great Plains Regional Director.

Pete Petersen, supervisor for Anheuser Busch Clydsdales a guest of Bob Bush.

(Dont forget! Branding Time is coming during October and November!)

TUIT REPORT

Monte McConnaughy remains the proud holder of the TUIT for yet another week.

We would like to see Monte, but the TUIT can stay on its sabbatical.

PROGRAM: The Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales, in town for the Kansas State Fair, were the main topic of this weeks program. Pete Petersen, supervisor and hitch driver for the Clydesdales, was our guest speaker. The Budweiser Clydesdales were originally a gift from August A. Busch, Jr. to Gustaf Busch in 1933 to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition. Descended from the great war horses of Europe, the Clydesdales remain a living symbol of Anheuser-Busch, the last major American-owned brewery. When full-grown, a Clydesdale is over 18 hands tall and weighs 1800 to 2300 lbs.! Approximately 250 horses are in the complete herd. Only male Clydesdales are used for the hitch when they are 4 to 5 years old. The females are kept at Grants farm in St. Louis for breeding purposes. Five hours of grooming is necessary for each appearance of these gentle giants. The eight-horse team will be pulling the nearly four-ton Budweiser brewery wagon during each day of the Kansas State Fair.

Club Announcements

Mr. Conrad reported that the tournament was progressing steadily towards its goals with 100 companies involved in corporate sales, 200 autos donated by local dealers for use during the tournament and 25% of ticket sales concluded.

TUIT REPORT

Randall Haltom had Preston Clark, Darren Wicks (actually, his wife)

custodian of the proverbial dead weight.

PROGRAM:

Our program began with a presentation by our President, JoAnn Williams, of a $2500 donation to the Director of Camp Hope, Mike Brown. Program Chairman, Lori Hopp introduced the speaker.

Camp Hope was founded in the 1980s by Donna Brown with the American Cancer Society. The camp was established to allow children with cancer to have the same opportunities for enjoyment as other children. Located at Camp Aldrich near Great Bend, the camp is held during the third week of June each year. Average attendance at the camp is 65 to 70 campers with a volunteer staff of 70 adults.

Mike Brown is a cancer survivor and also a former camper. Mike attended the camp for several years and met his wife at Camp Hope. Hutchinson AMBUCS have been a financial supporter of Camp Hope since its inception.

TUIT REPORT

World traveler, Tom Hymer, has yet to return with our old friend. Beware of accumulating fines from our elusive Sgt. at Arms. BTW! The TUIT says, “High!”

PROGRAM:

What better program than an AMTRYKE presentation! Three year old Grace Villa was our special guest on this occasion. Grace was sent home from the hospital not expected to live. The miracle child survived and was the recipient of her very own AMTRYKE. As soon as she spotted her new ride, A Tryke! was her response. Grace was accompanied by her parents Jesus and Luz Gomez; and her therapist from the Early Education Center, Cary Bowman. Grace thanked the AMBUCS, but her beaming smile was more than enough for us.

President Joann Williams and outgoing District 5-D Governor Doug Foss reported on the AMBUC National Convention in North Carolina. Hutchinson AMBUCS was recognized for donating five or more AMTRYKES, for being a Merit Club and presented with a 50th anniversary Living Endowment badge for our new awards banner. Doug Foss was recognized for being a Superior District Governor (4th in the nation). The convention was attended by approximately 500 people. Convention events included a Wednesday family reunion, a 36 AMTRYKE rodeo (which were given away including one from us), the Big Hat Auction which raised more than $37,000 and the dedication of the new AMBUC National Resource Center (8,000 square feet). Kip Miles, a notorious AMBUC, was elected National Big Hat President. JoAnn and Doug brought back AMBUC golf shirts as prizes for the upcoming golf tournament.

You do not have to be an officer to attend a National Convention. Make plans to attend the next National Convention and meet AMBUCS from across the country.

Club Announcements

ICE CREAM BOOTH: Sign up now for a minimum of three shifts-four hours in length. We are fortunate as a club to have fundraising projects which are highly productive and limited in terms of time commitment. Please make yourself available during the 10 days of the Kansas State Fair to assist with the operations of the booth. Invite a fellow AMBUC to join you for a scheduled shift. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: August 5, 2005 at 6:15 A.M. at the Town Club. Your presence is respectfully requested.

Web Host Move: You should know by now that we are moving our Hutchinson AMBUCS web page to a new host computer on the Internet. The migration is going slower than expected, due to “broken” codes that just don’t work properly. However, when things are complete the actual move should be transparent to all users. We will keep things per the old status quo until everything checks out properly.

When the website is working, and the move is complete, there will be no changes in the way you use the website. Even the web address (URL) will remain the same.

FINES

BIG HATTERS were in charge. Doyle last laugh Ehling was presiding. Jack was fined first as a matter of principle. Tony, Guy and Eric were fined for no Big Hats. Preston was fined for his Billy Bob attire. Stan was fined for something about an ugly dog. Fines were purchased for JoAnns granddaughters 2nd birthday and for Jeff and Pat Brewers 33rd wedding anniversary.

State Representative Mark Treaster — Our program speaker

TUIT REPORT

World traveler, Tom Hymer, has yet to return with our old friend. Beware of accumulating fines from our elusive Sgt. at Arms.

p

PROGRAM:

Our speaker for this meeting was Rep. Mark Treaster from the 101st District. Rep. Treaster is a former teacher and has a masters degree in special education. Considering that Mrs. Treaster is a school principal, education is a significant interest in his life. Which is good, since during his freshman term as a legislator, the governor called a special session to address the Supreme Court decision regarding school finance.

Rep. Treaster does not believe that the Kansas Supreme Court over-stepped its boundaries. During the 1990s, school funding did not keep pace with inflation. From 2000 to 2004, no monies were added for school funding. The end result was a shifting of school financing to local option budgets rather than statewide funding. The 2005 legislature passed a bill for an additional $142 million for education. The Supreme Court ruled that this amount was inadequate. The legislature responded with additional spending in the special session.

A study will be conducted by the Legislative Post Audit Committee to determine the cost of educating a child in Kansas and the need for further increases for educational finances.

We appreciate Rep. Treasters efforts on Reno Countys behalf on these difficult issues.
