TUIT REPORT
Monte McConnaughy remains the proud holder of the TUIT for yet another week.
We would like to see Monte, but the TUIT can stay on its sabbatical.
PROGRAM: The Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales, in town for the Kansas State Fair, were the main topic of this weeks program. Pete Petersen, supervisor and hitch driver for the Clydesdales, was our guest speaker. The Budweiser Clydesdales were originally a gift from August A. Busch, Jr. to Gustaf Busch in 1933 to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition. Descended from the great war horses of Europe, the Clydesdales remain a living symbol of Anheuser-Busch, the last major American-owned brewery. When full-grown, a Clydesdale is over 18 hands tall and weighs 1800 to 2300 lbs.! Approximately 250 horses are in the complete herd. Only male Clydesdales are used for the hitch when they are 4 to 5 years old. The females are kept at Grants farm in St. Louis for breeding purposes. Five hours of grooming is necessary for each appearance of these gentle giants. The eight-horse team will be pulling the nearly four-ton Budweiser brewery wagon during each day of the Kansas State Fair.
