Our Guest Speaker

State Representative Mike ONeal

TUIT REPORT

Tom Hymer was not with us our first week back at the town club and has amassed a total of 4 weeks carrying The TUIT. But, The TUIT has asked that we extend its warmest greetings to all Hutch AMBUCS members.

PROGRAM:

Tom Stanton introduced our speaker Representative Mike ONeal. Mike is celebrating 20 years as our state representative to the 104th district. Mike is currently serving as a member of the Revenue, Judicial, Transportation, Retirement Budget, Rules & Journal committees. He is Chairperson of the Judiciary committee and Vice Chairperson of the School Finance committee.

He explained that school districts were formerly funded by property tax only. Today a formula of property, sales and income tax is used to fund school districts. Following a ruling by the courts, the legislature was forced to increase funding this year to school districts by more than double the additional amount enacted in the regular Legislative. Beginning in 2007, these shortages as well as payments to replace funds borrowed from the state highway fund will increase taxes over 1.8 billion to meet demands.

It is true that private Christian and Catholic school costs per student are almost half that of public schools. That is due in part to the fact that Special Education, At Risk and Bi-Lingual classrooms furnished by the public schools are duty bound to take even those students from Christian and Catholic schools. These special classes increase the state costs significantly.

The unpopular subject of consolidation of some and de-consolidation of other school districts and administration is required to help reduce these escalating costs.

You can reach Mike at oneal@house.state.ks.us to discuss this and many other subjects the state is dealing with.

Those members who couldnt think of the words he gave clues about were fined.

Randall Haltom was fined for having a high school photo of him in the paper celebrating his 50th birthday.

TUIT REPORT

Im sure Tom Hymer has amassed quite a list of forgetful souls during the past three weeks

PROGRAM:

For our 2nd and final week on the road, we met at Disability Supports of the Great Plains at 4000 N. Monroe for our meeting with Knackies of Inman catering our breakfast again.

Jo Ann Williams introduced Virginia LaForce, Case Manager and John Sanders, Operations Manager of the facility. Virginia explained that here in Hutchinson they serve approximately 40 adult residents in-house and 30 adults in their own homes. When they first opened, all their clients were wheelchair bound with very severe impairments. Today, they are able to help a greater variety of impairments such as Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome and more severe brain injuries.

Staffing costs here are much higher due to the special needs of the clients. Disability Supports offers supported living, activities, day services and supports, self-directed supports and case management. Day programs for clients include using computers for vocational instruction such as printing the brochures and business cards for the facility to fun activities such as special chat rooms.

Our club recently donated the funds to purchase a special computer for one of the clients who needed one with specialized software. They emphasize a FUN atmosphere for their clients with a multitude of activities inside and outside the facility including annual group vacations. In the not so distant future they hope to build a new facility close to their clients homes on Coventry Court located North of Hutchinson Hospital.

Disability Supports also operates a facility in McPherson.

PROGRAM:

Jo Ann Williams introduced Mary Smith and Connie Clark, both board members of Reins of Hope Therapeutic Riding, Inc. Reins of Hope is a non-profit program that seeks to offer children and adults with physical, mental and or emotional disabilities the benefits of therapeutic riding. It was great to be back visiting their facility and see how they are continuing to grow their program.

Jo Ann presented Mary and Connie with a donation form our club in the amount of $2,500 to help support the efforts that Reins of Hope is making to help those individuals with special needs that they serve.

Carol Burgess helped to develop the program in March 1995 with a handful of students and borrowed space to their present facility and more than 50 students. Carol retired from the program as President of the Board in January 2004. The arena is named for Roy Coffey who was instrumental in raising the funds needed to purchase the 20 acres of land that they own. John Baldwin who was a member of the Board of Directors was the driving force behind making their building a reality. A trail, garden and future outdoor arena have been named in Johns honor. The present facility allows for a maximum of 10 horses, which they currently have. They operate March through December and are closed during the winter months. Jane Harder is the current President of the board and director of the facility.

continual areas of need are student scholarships, horse sponsorship and specialized equipment. They always need volunteers to assist with their riding lessons and many other areas of the program.

TUIT REPORT

Scott Potucek, found out that the Tuit was in fact a small oval, not a circle – being off by 15 microns.

He went on to do an in-depth dissertation about the Tuit, the definition of the work “round” – including a “round” of beers,

ending with “a round of round, rounds.” It was akin to what the definition of “is,” is. Scott determined that a copy of the

Tuit, or even a FAX of a copy of the Tuit is okay to carry, since the Tuit is so heavy – fits within the rules?? Vicki Fultz

did ask about the Tuit. Scott gave the Tuit to Don Grosshardt.

PROGRAM:

Jay Pitzer introduced Kyle Ward. Kyle received a grant from AMBUCS to help pay for his “Speak Easy” device. He is a student at Buhler High School and is on the Honor Roll, in band, choir, plays soccer and basketball and other activities. Kyle stutters and the Speak Easy device helps him to speak in public without stuttering. It works by providing a small delay of the sound of his voice inside his ear, which keeps him from stuttering. Before he had this aid, he could not speak in public, as he was able to do at our meeting. Speak Easy has given him confidence. He has to listen to the sound in order for it to work and practiced a couple of days when it was new. They can use these for children in grade school. He first saw the device demonstrated on Oprah. The cost was about $5,100.
