Brenda Maxey and Marcy Kauffman of TECH, Inc. guests of the club.

Chris Eastland of Krause Corporation a guest of Duke Wiggins.

TUIT REPORT

The TUIT is testing the investment waters with Kevin Miller;

and will presumably return on November 18th.

PROGRAM:

Brenda Maxey and Marcy Kauffman appeared to announce upcoming events for the Training and Evaluation Center for the Handicapped. The Annual Holiday Festival is scheduled for November 18 & 19.

On Friday the 18th, the Wassail Party begins at the Sunflower building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. Admission is $2.00 per person and features the Buhler Singers. Take advantage of this opportunity to preview the items which will be auctioned on Saturday; and submit a silent bid for these items.

Then on Saturday the 19th, sit down at white-clothed dinner tables to enjoy heavy hors douerves and Big Band music from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. The Saturday night activities feature 3 silent auctions and one celebrity auction. Admission is $30.00 per person or $300.00 for a corporate table.

All of these activities are for the purpose of raising funds for TECHs operations. These events are even more critical when there are shortages in grant monies such as the $30,000 which the Early Education Center will not receive this year. The Early Education Center has been one of the Hutchinson AMBUCS favorite recipients of donations since the program provides early intervention services to children with special needs from ages zero to two and one-half years of age.

Additional details for these events and Breakfast With Santa are available on TECHs website at www.techinc.org.

A Vacation letter from Kal and Gretchen Singh: Hello from Langkawi, Malaysia, a resort island two hours off the mainland by ferry.

Will be missing another meeting. We spent 5 days in Penang, the pearl of the Orient, in a seaside resort. We went to the shacks where the tsunami victims are living now and distributed the money from the tsunami fund I started. Their conditions are sub-human. It was a very emotional experience as we went door to door.

It was Hari Raya, their new years, and so inspirational, for us and them. We have the addresses and pictures and will bring them for you to see, and hopefully this time we can collect a dollar from everyone to continue to help these people that were so poor before the tsunami. It took most of 2 days to go to so many places to get to the people we needed to find

Back to vacation: After that we went parasailing while in our resort and tomorrow are going to another island to snorkel the corral reefs. The water is green and the sand white. We have been well and hope all of you have been also. Am working on my tan. Ha!

TUIT REPORT and fines

Yes, we have a report! Monte has returned with the circular pest.

(Um … The Publisher wants to know, was that the Full Monte?)

But first, Monte proudly announces the arrival of a new baby boy

on September 10. At 7 lbs. 6 oz., the baby is doing fine.

Now to the fines!

Rick Mitchell and Paul Brown were fined for not asking about the TUIT at the Chamber After Hours. Don Grossardt, Scott Horton and Bob Bush (because of Ann) were fined for not asking at another chamber event.

Monte bestowed the TUIT upon Rod Fry.

PROGRAM:

Keith Schroeder introduced our program, Louis Bruce, Warden of the Hutchinson Correctional Facility.

The facility is comprised of three locations; the Central Unit formerly known as the Reformatory, the East Unit on Halstead and the South Unit on Avenue G. HCF is the second largest employer in Reno County with 650 on staff and 1850 total workers in the units.

The warden started his corrections career at Lansing and was part of a reform movement within the corrections system. Considering that 95% of the inmates return to the street, it is important to provide them with the tools needed to avoid a return visit. Economics has a lot to do with recidivism. Inmates need educational programs, employment, adequate housing and a support system to continue on parole after release.

The institution provides numerous activities for the inmates to keep them occupied. This approach has shown positive results with a drop in the recidivism rate from 60% to 45%. The Kansas Correctional System is rated in the top ten of the nations prisons.
