Bob Bush took the TUIT to Washington, D.C. to see the other Bushes.”

Then, our Bush sent an e-mail on membership and fined all those who did not respond.

Bill Rogers was selected as the new keeper of the metal ring.

Sgt. Tom returned with his giant assistant Rod Fry.

(You mean those weren’t Mutt ‘n Jeff I saw?)

Doug and Jill were assessed a vacation tax. Brenda J. was fined for sucking up to the Sgt. Stan M. paid for silence. Doyle was assessed the quote of the day fine: Nobody ever talks back to me! Tony received the winery tax. Doug F., Al S. and Fred C. were fined for denim.

AMTRYKE PRESENTATION:

Ted Hall, a second grader at Lincoln Elementary, was presented with a new set of wheels. Ted has cerebral palsy and needs help with leg development. Ted was joined by his parents, Dewain and Glenna, and his siblings Toryo and Kelly.

Brenda Janda introduced Marc Trent with the Hutchinson Recreation Commission as our program. Marc is the son of the late Alvis Trent, a long-time member and friend of the Hutchinson AMBUCS.

Marc presented a video used to train parents about their responsibilities at youth sports events. The four basics of sports for youth include: learning fundamentals, making friends, participation in athletic events and having fun. Unfortunately, some parents become overzealous about their childs success rather than seeking their childs enjoyment. 70% of the young people do not participate in sports by age 13 because it is no longer fun. Parents need to remember that recreational sports are for the children not the parents. Let coaches coach, let officials officiate, show support, keep emotions under control and keep concerns away from the game and the child. Be a model league parent!

Hutchinson Community at Large

In the past few months, we have all watched with interest and anxiety as one or another American was taken hostage or harmed in Iraq. Several months back, three Christian Peacemaker Team (CPT) members one American and two Canadians were taken hostage while pursuing non-war peace issues and threatened with death. One, an American, died due to undisclosed causes while in captivity. The other two, Canadians, were released just a few weeks ago.

CPT raises the question, “What would happen if Christians devoted the same discipline and self-sacrifice to nonviolent peacemaking that armies devote to war?” They are currently sending representatives around the country to various communities to explain their work and to answer questions. Two CPTers will be at First Mennonite Church, 52 Rambler Rd, here in Hutchinson on Saturday evening, April 29 to present a program. The meeting is open to the public. Anyone can serve with CPT in many different places around the world.

One of the CPTers who will be presenting here in Hutch on Saturday has served an assignment in Iraq, and will soon be going back.

If you would like to attend, can call First Mennonite Church at 662-9385 for time and other information.

Al S. was fined for claiming it was a bribe.

D.B. Society ,B. and Rod F. Rick M. for tardiness JoAnn for traffic difficulties Jack for his weekly outburst.

(We must also acknowledge the

assistance of the lovely Duke.)

Program:

Dennis Stofer, Reno County Undersheriff, presented a

PowerPoint tour of the Reno County Detention Center.

The current jail is a linear style jail that is inadequate in size and configuration. With a capacity of only 82 inmates, additional prisoners are housed at the annex which was a former commercial building not designed to house more serious offenders. Hallways of the jail do not provide full observation of the inmates nor do they provide safe distances for sheriffs deputies from inmates during hourly tours. The concrete and steel environment requires constant repainting due to the humidity and the antiquated ventilation system.

The solution to the above problems is a new jail to replace both the existing jail and the annex. A sales tax which sunsets after 11 years is the proposed financing mechanism for the project. At a total cost of $17 to $20 million, the new jail would feature minimum, medium, maximum and super maximum cells, an environment suitable for both inmates and sheriffs employees and a more secure location with respect to the other individuals who work at the Reno County Courthouse. The Reno County Sheriffs Office is hopeful of a referendum in August and seeks your support.

TUIT Report

The TUIT was indeed touring the golf course with Doug Foss — as predicted. As a result, the following AMBUCS were fined for not asking while playing the “gentlemans” game: Bob B., Al S., and Jay P. Tom H. was fined because Jill F. talked to Virginia; and she didnt ask. Rick M. was fined because he missed church and didnt ask. Rod F. was also fined for not asking. Dave S. was fined for being a new grandpa.

Brenda Janda is now the holder of the TUIT;

and it is touring the senior circuit.

Fines

D.B. Society Jeff B., Bob B., Stan M. and Chuck P. Bob B. for calling the Sgt. “Skippy.” Preston C. for ruining T-shirts consecutively. Steve-O for locking himself AND his family out of the car. John K. for duplicate programs.

Bald Mans revenge on the following: Stan, Steve H., Dan P., Doug F., Dave S., Jay P. and Marion (not Mark) M.

Program:

Brenda Janda introduced our multi-talented AMBUC, Chuck Peterson, as the speaker.

Ultra sound technology was the featured topic. Chuck uses what looks like a radar gun to locate bad bearings, over-greased bearings and leaking oxygen or argon in plant facilities. The ultra sound equipment detects frequencies above 20,000 MHz. (Yes, that is a great deal higher than a dog whistle!) Problem areas are tagged for repairs; and Chuck returns to confirm the elimination of the source.

Since oxygen costs $.20 per 1,000 cubic feet and argon $22.80 per 1,000 cubic feet, monetary losses can accumulate quickly. By identifying and resolving leaks and improperly functioning equipment, companies can avoid down time for the facility as well as lost wages, wasted supplies and unnecessary purchases of new equipment.

Chuck will be a featured speaker at the upcoming World Ultra Sound Conference.

Program:

Big Hatter President, Doyle Ehling, introduced Tom Hymer, fellow AMBUC, as our program.

Tom recently served on a mission trip to Honduras with Medical Ministry International for a one-week period. The ministry provides both spiritual and physical health care. Volunteers for the ministry include interpreters, optometrists, nurses and non-medical personnel.

Rural areas of the mountainous southwest region of Honduras were the destination on this occasion. Fifty percent of the people in this area are below the poverty line. With unpaved streets and no refuse service, certainly access to quality health care is not a possibility. Long lines of Honduran people formed for the rare opportunity to receive even a minimum level treatment.

Tom served as a dental assistant in a makeshift clinic in a local school. The only dental remedy provided was extraction of the tooth (novocaine, but no electricity for dental equipment). 250 patients and 500 extractions later, Toms adventure as a dental assistant was finished.

Further information about Medical Ministry International is available at www.mmint.org.

The membership welcomed fellow AMBUC, Chuck Peterson, who shared his experiences and photos from scuba diving.

The crystal clear waters of Cozumel provide 83 water temperatures and unequaled visibility at 60 to 80 foot depths. There are not sufficient descriptions for the colorful photos displayed on the screen. All types of underwater life were shown including groupers, barracudas, sharks, moray eels and coral.

Scuba diving includes the responsibility of not touching what you see and leaving only bubbles behind. Experience and training are still a must for anyone participating in this activity; remaining neutral in the water without arm movement, for example . Chuck displayed his various types of rigs, regulators and wetsuits used for scuba diving, labeling scuba diving a lazy mans sport.

Don Sketchley – 2nd visit and planning to join AMBUCS.

Jim Seitnater, Downtown Development Director & Guest Speaker

Jim also will join AMBUCS.

Tuit Report

From Lin Stevens (hopefully I got the right spelling this time):

Jay Pitzer and Greg West did not ask about the Tuit. Jay later asked about it – but did not ask Lin to produce it. Lin gave it to Doyle Ehling.

Program: Presented by Jim Seitnater, the Downtown Hutchinson Director. In the past the dominant Retail and medical groups, that were located in Downtown, have generally moved away. The character of Downtown has changed a lot as a result. It is still important to maintain a vibrant Downtown for the vitality of Hutchinson. The next phase of the Streetscape project will be on West First to the area affected by the explosion. There will eventually be a corridor from the Court House to the Post Office. Much of the cost will be replacing water lines that are 100 years old. The Streetscape project will eventually revitalize Main Street from Carey Park to 7th Ave. The original estimate of cost was from 10 to 12 Million dollars. Bids have come in generally for much less, so more work has been planned.

The expansion of Downtown has come from current businesses expanding. As on example, when Ben Franklin was closed, the owner started a frame shop and leased part of the space to the optical shop that moved from around the corner, makes them Frames and Frames. Downtown space is 85% occupied and has never really been distressed, as in some towns. The exception is the Wiley Building, which is not used as it could be and has great potential. There are currently discussions with the owner in an attempt to work something out for this building. There are currently 80 people living in the Plaza Towers and in the Leon downtown.

Jim is working with the Anchor Inn for a grant to help redo the brick on the front of their building. They will know the results on May 13. The brick needs work on both the north and south building, as well as the one where the bricks fell. Jim is planning on bringing some experts on brick work to Hutchinson for consultations. Grants and tax credits are available for work on building in historic districts.

Spring Roundup: Bob Bush on the membership drive Lately, several dropped membership for personal reasons unrelated to AMBUCS. We need to bring breakfast guests to replace them.

Bob is looking into recruiting incentives for Friends of AMBUCS (folks who want to stay in touch and may help with our fund raisers, but can’t attend the meetings).

Next Meeting:

Randy Henderson will host Reno County Undersheriff Dennis Stofer, speaking on the jail project

Fines:

Ward Davis could not remember name of who he asked to do the prayer.

Eric Steinle on time for a change fined anyway.
