Stan “Marvin” Macgirvin was short on contact for the lonely TUIT. Scott Saylor asked everyday; and Al S. asked in South Hutch. Doc didnt ask and had to pay (No senior discount here!).

Wannabe studs: Curtis M., Ward D., Preston C., and Al S. were all fined for not knowing why wall studs are spaced 16 inches apart.

PROGRAM

Bob Hickman, Preparedness Coordinator for the Reno County Health Department, was introduced as our speaker by Randy Henderson.

Mr. Hickman gave details regarding preparations for pandemic flu. This is not a new strain of flu, but a flu outbreak of catastrophic proportions. Procedures need to be developed by businesses to adapt to situations where a majority of employees may be unavailable for an extended period of time or where supplies or services to your business are interrupted.

Current strains of flu virus such as the Avian or bird flu virus already carry a serious threat to life for those who contract this illness. Regular flu vaccinations can reduce the risk.

TUIT

Scott Saylor was the proud bearer of the little round menace this week and leveled fines to Brad Thompson, Stan Macgirvin, Jay Pitzer and Guy Gann (actually Bobbi Gann forgot to ask and prepaid for Guy).

Scott then presented Stan Macgirvin with the Tuit; at which point Stan said that Scott is still #1!

FINES

Jim Kicklighter was Sgt. at Arms this morning, with help from Al Strecker.

Nathan Meyer was fined for being late. He was also fined along with Kip Hildebrand and Curtis Mitchell for missing the New Members Orientation. Lee Gleason was fined a jealousy tax for playing golf on his recent trip to Mexico.

A Guilt By Association tax was leveled to the Edward Jones boys (Jay Pitzer, Dan Power and Darren Wicks) for the picture Jim found on the net of an Edward Jones sign which included Donuts, Guns and Daycare sort of a one stop shopping. Tom Hymer was fined because AT&T sponsored a Chamber Legislative Forum NOT Alltel. John Knipp is on the Agri-Business Committee for the Chamber his picture was featured in the Chamber Newsletter in which he was fined for not wearing his AMBUC pin. Paul Brown was fined for getting around last week as a Chamber Ambassador he had coffee in a new business at the mall then did Daisy (Deli) afterwards (or was it the other way around?)

Jack Mace paid for sending an intelligent email (if you didnt get this email, let me know). Doug Foss paid for his disparaging comments of Sgt. Jims Homeland (So. Carolina). JoAnn Williams had lunch with Mark Treaster in Topeka last week and Mark sent along his dollar with Jo Ann since he will be busy at work for a while. Curtis Mitchell paid another fine for having his pregnant wife shovel snow (please dont tell me he has a washing machine in the basement that needs removed).

Then there was the continuation of the Anna Nicole-Smith trivia game this week. Doyle Ehling paid for requesting that Hutchinson be Anna Nicoles final resting place (Ill bet he knows a fine mortuary to help with the arrangements), and Randall Haltom was fined for being one of the babys fathers, though he firmly denies it.

PROGRAM

Randy Henderson introduced officers from the Reno County Sheriffs Department to discuss the different programs they are working with area schools to better educate our children on drug/personal safety awareness, etc.

Sgt. Jim Potter began speaking on the DARE Program in Reno County. Currently, 3 officers are responsible for implementing the DARE Program in 22 schools in the five different school districts in Reno County. The officers are not a full time presence in any of the schools as the DARE officers from Hutchinson Police Department are in their respective schools. The Personal Safety Awareness Program has been implemented in classrooms since 1983. This program consists of a 4 part series instructing children on different aspects of personal safety including good touch/bad touch and stranger danger. The teacher instructs two of the four sessions, the DARE officer instructs one session and a mental health professional teaches a session. The Sheriffs Department strives to maintain a positive involvement in the schools with these programs as they want the children to view them not as a threat as many see law enforcement through parental drug busts and domestic violence calls. Wesley Vaughn will replace Jerry Maxfield as a DARE officer for the county when Jerry retires in the next few weeks.

Ofr. Jerry Maxfield spoke about LifeSkills Training which teaches children about the different influences on their lives and decision making: parents, friends, relatives, neighbors and the community. This program is a good compliment to the DARE Program. Jerry also spoke on the Cadet Program, which is youth introduction to law enforcement. Young adults are encouraged to enroll in the program and through bi-monthly training sessions and riding with officers on duty, they learn to appreciate law enforcement at a early age. Ofr. Maxfield also discussed the newest drug threatening our young people an over the counter cold medication called Coricidin. It is referred to on the street as Skittles and as with most of these types of drugs can cause death if too many are taken.

Ofr. Becky Dyer finished the program discussing the DARE Camp. This camp teaches DARE and LifeSkills training more one on one than in the classroom using team building activities. The camp meets the first weekend in June at Camp Aldridge in Claflin, KS. The DARE Camp has been in existence since 1990 with the average yearly attendance at 96 kids. The cost for the camp is $35 for 3 days. Upon completion, the children graduate from the program receiving certificates and t-shirts.

Welcome to Jerry Dalton; our newest member sponsored by Preston Clark.

TUIT

Preston Clark was asked by many members about the TUIT this week.

Those who forgot

John Knipp, Stan Macgirvin, Darren Wicks, Duke Wiggins and Dan Power along with several who were not here. Preston also sent out an e-mail and got the balance of the membership for not asking (we should have known).

The TUIT was passed on to Scott Saylor.

Jim Kicklighter with help from Doug Foss were our Sgt. at Arms this morning.

Those fined for complaining about the morning ritual were Paul Brown, Al Strecker, Jeff Brewer, and Scott Saylor. Jack Mace was fined for being late. Jack was also fined for forgetting to add Pam Brooks to the e-mail list. Steve Conard was fined for not having name badges for Pam Brooks or Pat Fallon. Pam Brooks was fined for getting in line in front of the Sgt.s in line. Jay Pitzer was fined for not knowing who the Sgt.s were. Dan Power was fined for his billboard supporting a competitor’s funeral home and not our club members business, for which he blamed Jeff Brewer, who was also fined.

Jim Kicklighter played the Anna Nicole-Smith trivia game this morning. Preston Clark got the right month and wrong year that she married Jay Howard Marshall. Eric Steinle got how old she was when she married Jay Howard Marshall (26). Don Grossardt got the name of the movie that she made her movie debut (Naked Gun 33 1/3). Questions missed included the town in Florida that she died (Hollywood), her real name (Vicki Lynn Hogan), her first husbands name (Billy Wayne Smith), how old Jay Howard Marshall was when he married her (89) and her movie idol (Marilyn Monroe).

PROGRAM

Guy Gann introduced Sylvia Griggs with Cause for Paws, Inc.

The purpose for CfP is to advertise, promote and support the new Hutchinson Animal Shelter. A second purpose is to promote responsible pet ownership in the City of Hutchinson.

Benefits of joining include supporting the shelter in their work to help neglected and abandoned animals of Reno County, a quarterly newsletter (for contributing members), invitation to fundraisers, educational and members only events and a 10% discount on merchandise and members only events.

As a 501-C-3, not-for-profit organization, your donations to CfP are tax deductible. Gladys Gossage gave a sizable gift of over a million dollars, which will be setup as an endowment, from which the interest will help to support ongoing expense. In the near future they hope to use excess funds to purchase a crematorium so they can stop using the landfill for disposal of animals that are euthanized. This could also be used as a fundraiser as many veterinarians do not have one.

They hope to have a new fenced dog park open by summer. They also sponsor the annual Salty-Dog festival each summer.

The shelter’s $100 adoption fee includes having your pet spayed or neutered before leaving the facility, all necessary vaccinations and health checks, a microchip and a dog license for dogs. You can also have your pet micro-chipped for $35, which will help reunite lost pets with their owners.

For more information on how to become a volunteer or help with the needs of the shelter or to become a member of CfP contact Sylvia at 663-9012.

TUIT

Those fined for not asking Nathan Meyer about the TUIT were Bob Bush; Darren Wicks (paying in lieu of Dan Power); Pat Fallon, since Nathan had visited several Central Bank offices; and John Knipp, since Nathan had visited Peoples Bank.

Nathan gave the TUIT to the first person to make eye contact Preston Clark.

FINES

Jim Kicklighter with help from Bob Bush were Sgt.s-at-arms.

Jimbob started off by fining those members who are making money because of the cold weather, Brad Thompson and Larry Sloan. Jay Pitzer was fined for making Donna shovel the snow at home. He did buy her a new snow blower but I dont think he showed her how to use it.

Eric Steinle paid for being early for next weeks meeting and late to this weeks again. Preston Clark paid $2 for a prior IOU. Jeff Brewer paid for being bored of the Sgt.s (but he was really nodding off during the program). Jack Mace for being President of the new club within our club Geek Club (unfortunately hes also the only member thus far).

Jimbob then proceeded to raffle off a couple of coats from the closet and Mark Clark paid to save his. The other belonged to Jerry Dalton, which was returned to him without a fine since he hasnt joined yet. Since Brenda Janda wasnt here with her guest Jeff Brewer suggested fining the rank-and-file which was Ward Davis. Jeff was also fined for ratting the President out.

Scott Saylor was fined for winning such a large 50/50 pot last week, which was reduced by $1 to $29.

The Sgt.s then checked everyone for his or her membership card; no, not the breakfast invitation cards, but the real laminated membership card you get upon becoming a bonafide member of AMBUCS. I guess I better find mine, as I havent seen it in 20+ years.

Brad Thompson then commandeered the toilet and fined both Sgt.s for not getting here early enough to get out the American Flag, the banners, the toilet, the bell etc. Both paid!!

PROGRAM

Guy Gann introduced Cody Heitschmidt with LogicMaze Website Design & Small Business Marketing.

Codys wife Tamara, was working for Pipeline Testing when they asked her to build a web site for them. After she did she quit and started her own company. They now have 6 employees and are hiring their 7th this next week.

They began by doing web site design for other companies but now offer enhancements such as video, live chat, interactive sites and animation. They also offer graphic design services such as logo and print design. Interactive media PowerPoint presentations with video and animation is another service they offer. They are engaged in Internet marketing using search engine keywords, and banner ads to target the person who is looking for that particular product or service in their search.

Cody said he feels this is the best use of a persons advertising money. He said people are beginning to use the Google phonebook more than the white pages to find a telephone number.

Another service offered is search engine optimization. This is when your name comes up first in search. Being first is the key to more sales. They are now offering complete business marketing including design, media, print and web services as a total package.

Almost everyone else paid a $1 fine for getting breakfast ahead of the Sgt.s. (I suppose we should have found out who they were first).

PROGRAM

Brenda Janda introduced Nancy Sinclair with Hospice Care of Kansas. As a consultant Nancy helps to educate people about Hospice care.

Hospice Care of Kansas services can be paid for by either Medicare or Medicaid benefits. In Hutchinson there are 12 different hospices listed, with 6 having local offices. Hospices help to make the transition from life to death with dignity, comfort, and quality of life. They help reunited families during a difficult time also offering support and helping to meet basic needs.

Hospice Care of Kansas was started in 1999 in Wichita. They now have 13 offices located throughout Kansas and are the largest Hospice in the state. They have over 30 staff members locally, visiting clients either in their own homes, nursing or assisted living centers. They are the largest employer of non-denominational chaplains in the state.

Hospices usually care for a person with a terminal illness who has 6 months or less left to live. The current state average of those using hospice care is 1\3 use Hospice Care of Kansas, 1\3 use other hospices and 1\3 use none.

Jeff Brewer, it is now time to wake up.

FINES

Jim Kicklighter with help from Mark Clark levied this week’s fines.

Brenda Janda was fined a membership renewal tax for her long absence. Preston Clark paid for not calling Brenda as a membership committee procedure. Bob Bush was fined for not introducing the morning program. Mark Clark was fined for being late (breaking with tradition of not fining the Sgt.s). Steve Conard paid a fine for having one too many at a Christmas party, that both Sgt.s attended.

This weeks game by the Sgt.s was What does that member do for a living? … Nathan Meyer, Randall Haltom, Curtis Mitchell and Vern Powers didnt and were fined but several others did and were safe (for now).

PROGRAM

Brenda Janda introduced Joy Robinson with Senior Secure Solutions. Joys business is to help people, mostly seniors age 55 or older, to safely grow and protect their life savings. Basically retirement planning. She also assists seniors with finding the best solution for long-term care a subject she finds most people have avoided dealing with.

Nationwide statistics show 70% of people over age 65 will need a retirement home and 20% of people 85 years of age or older reside in a retirement home. Locally costs can reach $50,000 a year with costs in larger cities reaching $70,000 or more for nursing home care. Dont count on Medicare to pay for care and Medicaid only pays about 55% of long term care. When you apply for Medicaid they can look back 5 years at any assets you have or have had. There are many insurance type products on the market to help with long term and family member care.

A relatively new idea for someone who owns his or her home who may need to look at moving to a nursing home is a Home Equity Home Mortgage sometimes referred to as a reverse mortgage. With this type of mortgage a homeowner puts their home into a trust which then pays a monthly amount to your nursing home. There are possible options with this plan on how it will end and how the proceeds will be divided.

Contact Joy if you need more information about the many options that are available for seniors at 620-663-2232.

Second Reading; AmTryke: A second reading for an AmTryke for ?? (I missed the name it again) a Wichita referral. Motion passed.

Bob Bush explained that he had donations from members totaling about $1,500 and that the club may not have to spend any money towards this sponsorship. The $500 will cover any shortfall, if needed. Motion passed.

WebMaster Assist: If anyone would like to learn HTML programming to help with posting information on our web-site contact Jack Mace as soon as possible. He will be offering training beginning in the second week of February. We are in a precarious position with only one person knowing our web site. We need at least two back-ups. More would be better. TUIT

Curtis Mitchell said that he visited Don Grossardt, who forgot to ask until Pam Brooks (who was there) mentioned it. Neither was here to pay $$.

Curtis was going to give the TUIT to Pam but instead gave it to Lee Gleason, continuing the new member streak.

FINES

Sgt. at Arms Jim Kicklighter with help from Bob Bush levied this weeks fines.

Paul Brown was fined for verbal abuse of the Sgt.; an old carry-over fine for Greg West as last newsletter editor spelled Troop (as in Scout) Troupe (as in Ballet).

Jim played a membership trivia game with those in attendance. Scott Saylor, Pat Fallon, Terry Brigman and Jim Kicklighter missed knowing a critical piece of information about a member or his family and were fined.

Randall Haltom paid for knowing too much. Duke Wiggins paid for not asking Dwight Wiehl to join our club after working together for just a few (31) years.

PROGRAM

Our own Randy Henderson provided our program sharing some of his experiences about his recent attendance of the FBI National Academy. The FBI Academy is located on the U.S. Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Virginia situated on 385 wooded acres of land.

Four times a year, 1% of the worlds law enforcement officers that are Lieutenant level or above are chosen to attend the Academy. Randy said that he was chosen 2 years ago to attend but that his body fat content kept him from attending, which must be a maximum of 24%. This class of 269 officers from the U.S., Canada and 28 other countries included 11 female officers. Their average age was 42 and 10 were over 50 years of age. They prefer attendees have a 4-year college degree and have been on duty for 4 years.

Each Academy lasts 10 weeks and undergraduate and/or graduate classes are held in: Law, Behavioral Science, Forensic Science, Leadership Development, Communication and Health/Fitness. Also specialized training on Terrorism and Homeland Security has been added. Randy received 19 credit hours from the University of Virginia for classes he attended.

Guest speakers included Michael Durant an officer in Black Hawk Down, John Miller with NBC news, Gordon Graham on Management Training and Frank W. Abagnale of Catch Me, If You Can fame who is now a consultant to the FBI and other agencies on counterfeiting. The President also came and worked out in the gym with some of the officers. Their class also toured the White House and Ground Zero. The most grueling part was the 6.2 mile run including The U.S. Marines obstacle course for the last 3.2 miles know as The Yellow Brick Road.

The only cost to attend the Academy was travel to and from Virginia with the government picking up the rest of the tab. There were 266 graduates in this class. One dropped out due to injuries he received during week 2. One who didnt study, from Qatar, whom his country would have beheaded had it not been for the FBI intervening. Last an officer from Pakistan who came to class inebriated 3 times the last time 2 days before graduation.

Possibly the most enjoyable part was the sharing of ideas, techniques and experiences with the other officers that create lifelong partnerships which cross state and national borders.

Curtis Mitchell and Jay Pitzer were fined for not asking.

Curtis Mitchell is now the proud bearer of the Tuit. Good luck!

FINES

Jim Kicklighter and Eric Steinle for their lighthearted and occasionally nearly offensive antics on Friday morning.

All the Edward Jones gang Dan Power, Jay Pitzer, & Darren Wicks – were fined for their free power point advertisement. Also, Darren Wicks was fined for being late to the Chamber of Commerce Board Meeting hes the Chairman of the Board! Doug Foss paid for receiving phone calls during the presentation (something about his wife giving bad directions yeah, right Doug!). Tom Stanton and Duke Wiggins paid for cutting in front of the Sgts. in the breakfast line.

Stan Macgirvin had sold a dishwasher, which broke down after just 5 days. Then Chuck Peterson piped up about being married to HIS dishwasher for 40 years. (According to my wife, whatever Chuck paid was not near enough!) Yours truly paid again for my washing machine fiasco this time for making Nancy help me carry the drum out of the basement. (Regardless, DING/DONG the washing machine is dead!)

Curtis Mitchell was fined for being on the front page of the newspaper New Years Day, but no mention of AMBUCS. (Seriously, Curtis and his family are doing great things by being a Big Family to a young man from Big Bros./Big Sisters!)

PROGRAM

Dan Power gave a presentation of his hunting expedition inside the Arctic Circle. Dan, seven other hunters from Edward Jones in Denver and their guide went on a Cabellas organized hunt at the end of October when hunting season begins in that part of the world.

There are seven hours of daylight there, as compared to 2-3 hours this time of year. With the horizon and sky both completely gray, it is hard to discern between the two. It took 2 days of travel to arrive to their destination, including 4 flights and 12 hours by snowmobile. The average temperature during that time of year is 35 40 degrees below zero.

Dan said there was a real heat wave while he was there in that the temperature only was 20 degrees below zero. Otherwise, at the normal temperature skin freezes in just 33 seconds. Cabellas provided the outerwear, which consisted of bib overalls & parkas with 2 of goose down.

Dan was there to hunt Caribou and Musk Ox. He successful returned with both. Actually, he donated the meat from both animals to a childrens home. He brought the skin w/head home and is having them stuffed as full mounts.

The cost of living is extremely high there: a pineapple cost $20.19; carrots are $5.99 each and a grilled cheese sandwich will set you back $13.00.

Jack was fined for being too happy. The D.B. Society claimed as its members Fred C., Jeff B., Rod F., Dave S., and Don G. Tony and Tom S. were fined for being patriotic twins. Pat F. was fined for no pin in the Central Bank & Trust ad. Darren W., Dan P. and Jay P. received the Ed tax.

Then Sgt. Tom did the unthinkable, he broke years of AMBUC tradition and fined the incoming Sgt. at Arms, Jim K. and Larry S. (Bring your PDA to calculate the fines for poor Tom next year!) Tom Stanton then bought a fine to announce the birth of his new grandson, Mason.

President JoAnn Williams introduced our speaker, fellow AMBUC and Kansas State Representative, Mark Treaster. Mark serves on the following legislative committees: Taxation, Transportation, Economic Development and Wildlife and Parks.

210 bills were passed during this legislative session. One of the more noteworthy bills provides a tax exemption for business machinery and equipment purchased after July 1. However, the legislature is providing state funding to local taxing units to avoid erosion of the tax base from the granting of the exemption. Eminent domain was also restricted by the legislature to avoid the problems recognized in a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision involving economic development. Concealed carry of firearms was passed over the veto of the governor, but campaign reform did not survive the governors veto. Mark appreciates the support from the AMBUCS and looks forward to his re-election campaign.

THANK YOU, HUTCHINSON AMBUCS! Jan Ebmeier, teacher of Austin Cozell, brought a thank you message from Austins mother for his new AMTRYKE. Austin loves his new bike and his new independent mobility. When given a choice, Austin chooses his AMTRYKE as his favorite activity. Ms. Ebmeier relayed the excitement of Austins schoolmates who lined the schools hallways and cheered as he rode his AMTRYKE past them.

ICE CREAM BOOTH 2006: Jay Pitzer still needs volunteers to serve as part of the management team for the booth. If you are willing, training is no problem. Call Jay and commit to serve!

Bill Rogers wanted to fine Greg West and David Ross for not asking, but they could not be found.

The next best thing was to pass the TUIT to Bill Long.

What?! No Sgt. Tom! That leaves us with the allegedly cerebral Sgt. Scott Potucek and the demoted Asst. Sgt. Larry Sloan.

Doug F. was fined for fear of Fridays. Steve C. was fined for the botched Big Hat meeting notice (but it was a pretty color!). Jack was fined for being spammed … or being spam. Whatever! Bob B. was fined for not being spammed. Al S. and Jeff B. were fined for advertising for the Civitans. Randall H., Jeff F. and Darren W. were fined for being late.

And for the extra credit question: What do Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh and the Freemen State Massacre all have in common? (See Scott P. for answer.)

Uh! Oh! … Hmmmmmm! I wonder who’ll be fined for this blank space.

ICE CREAM COMMITTEE: We are already soliciting volunteers to serve as managers and assistant managers for the 2006 Kansas State Fair. Call Jay Pitzer and tell him you are qualified! If you are interested but inexperienced, we will train you. The primary skill is a willingness to work; the rest is simple.

INSTALLATION BANQUET: June 2, 2006 at the Highlands. It is not too late to sign up for the Installation Banquet featuring a Bar-B-Q buffet. Swearing in of the new officers and thanking those who have served this past year will be part of the agenda. The club is subsidizing the dinner so it is only $12.50 per person plus drinks. Also, if you havent seen one of our current members for a couple of meetings, call them and tell them they were missed.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:

Chairman, Eric Steinle, is looking for members to serve on the Program Committee for next year. If enough members volunteer, you would only be presenting a program every 4 to 6 weeks. Even if you are not on the committee, you may know of individuals or groups who could be a program. Contact Eric by phone or e-mail with your suggestions.

Our own Rep. Mark Treaster will present a Legislative Update.
