Program:
Dennis Stofer, Reno County Undersheriff, presented a
PowerPoint tour of the Reno County Detention Center.
The current jail is a linear style jail that is inadequate in size and configuration. With a capacity of only 82 inmates, additional prisoners are housed at the annex which was a former commercial building not designed to house more serious offenders. Hallways of the jail do not provide full observation of the inmates nor do they provide safe distances for sheriffs deputies from inmates during hourly tours. The concrete and steel environment requires constant repainting due to the humidity and the antiquated ventilation system.
The solution to the above problems is a new jail to replace both the existing jail and the annex. A sales tax which sunsets after 11 years is the proposed financing mechanism for the project. At a total cost of $17 to $20 million, the new jail would feature minimum, medium, maximum and super maximum cells, an environment suitable for both inmates and sheriffs employees and a more secure location with respect to the other individuals who work at the Reno County Courthouse. The Reno County Sheriffs Office is hopeful of a referendum in August and seeks your support.
Club Announcements
SPRING ROUNDUP: Bring a guest with you to our breakfast. We eat well; and we always have a good time! You know someone who would like to be a part of the Hutchinson AMBUCS. Pick up your prospective member and bring them to the meeting! You became a member because you enjoyed it; and wanted to return to have fun and help others in need at the same time. Your prospective member will feel the same way.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: John Knipp seeks your assistance with locating speakers for programs. Call John at 669-9809 with your suggestions.
John stepped up to take the responsibility for programs after Lori resigned from our club. He cannot do it all alone. He currently has only two Program Managers to help him.
Many of our club have experience with booking programs. Why don’t you join me and step up to help John. John, add me (Jack Mace) to your Program Manager list. … Maybe some of you don’t want to be on a regular rotation. I’ll just bet taht John would welcome you to take just one program every three to six months. Surely you can do that.
