Family Service Supervisor, Hutchinson office of the Kansas Childrens Service League

guest of Marion Miller

TUIT

Dan Power carried the wacky washer last week.

Paul Brown paid a $1 for not asking at the last Chamber Ambassadors function. The fact that Paul fail to attend the function was not allowed as an excuse. Jay Pitzer failed to asked, which really stumped Dan, as Jay always asks. Nathan Meyer definitely recognized Dan, as he verified Dans identity at First National Bank when his credit card failed. However, Nathan did not remember to ask about the tuit.

Dan passed the tuit to Dennis Reiser, who would have been carrying the tuit instead of Dan had he been at the last meeting.

FINES

Sergeants Jim K and Steve C started by recognizing Dan Power for paying for 4 radio spots in the time it takes to drive from Westminister to the Town Club. Sounds like Dan needs to contact Mr. Deming about the timing on his ads.

Luke McConnaughy, one of our newest members, has changed the name of his and Montes business to One-Hour Air Conditioning and Heating. Luke paid a $1 and offered his new business cards to anyone who asked. Sgt Jim seemed to know more about the whereabouts of Scott Saylors grandson than Scott does. His grandson was attneding a meeting of Cub Pack 303, along with Jim and his son. It pays to know where your grandchildren are in the evening.

Having some time to waste, Jim treated us to several more entries from his Red-Neck Dictionary. You dont even want to know what Al S came up with for be-moan.

PROGRAM

Michael Woods is the Family Service Supervisor for the Hutchinson office of the Kansas Childrens Service League. KCSL has been an advocate for at risk children for 125 years and the Hutchinson office is located at 400 W. 2nd, Suite D.

KCSLs services to children and their families are centered around home-based intervention, with the professionals coming to the home or pre-school setting to evaluate and design programs to aide the childs social and learning skills. The program which KCSL is usually identified with is Adoption and Foster Care Services. There is never a shortage of children in need of a home. The KCSL recruits adoptive parents and foster families to help fill this need. More recently, the focus has been on prevention through the Healthy Family program. Child abuse and neglect can be a result of stresses within the family. By identifying where and how various stresses are affecting the family, modification can be introduced, potentially relieving the excess stress and heading off pending problems.

Funding has been received to initiate a pilot program that provides family advocates to evaluate 4 year olds in their pre-school setting as they prepare for kindergarten. The purpose is to identify behaviors that may become problems in the public school setting. If evaluation identifies behaviors to be modified, a behavioral interventionist can be provided through the program.

Mr. Woods suggested that anyone who wishes to become involved with the Kansas Childrens Service League can contact him at 664-5000. They are always in need of persons to be on the Community Council that promotes fund-raising and seeks out volunteers.

TUIT

Monte McConnaughy FINALLY brought the TUIT back among the AMBUCS! He offered excuses about Friday surgeries, being out of town and things like that. It sounded like he was surprised when he tried a couple of weeks ago to have his brother, Luke bring it back for him, only for Luke to return it to him that same day. Nice try Monte and of course it’s not fair!

Some folks asked Luke about the TUIT, but since he didn’t have it, Bill Long was fined a dollar. Don Grossardt forgot to ask about it. Everyone remembered to ask Monte last night at the AMBUC sponsored Business After Hours at TECH. However, Monte ended up having to pay a few dollars since he didn’t have it with him when some AMBUCS did ask him about it.

Monte drew a name out of a bag to pass the TUIT on, but, since Dennis Reiser wasn’t present today, he had to draw again. Congratulations to Dan Power who is the proud holder of the TUIT for the next week. After 4 weeks with the TUIT, Monte passed it to Dan and said: “Have fun with it.I’m DONE”.

FINES

Kicklighter and Strecker were responsible for collecting fines from everyone today.

Paul Brown was fined for his photo in the Bee w/ no AMBUCS pin visible. Jay Pitzer paid a dollar as he continues to have his wife, Donna, shovel the snow and mow the grass with a push mower. Actually Jay, you are now my personal hero on how to run a household! Tom Stanton was late for the meeting. Greg West paid a fine for his gas pump topper advertising at Phillips 66. Kip Hildebrandt lost his AMBUCS pin.

Jim Kicklighter then moved on to conduct a redneck vocabulary test. Duke Higgins didn’t know that Bombardier means “bomb a deer”. Pam Brooks didn’t know Digest means “died just” 3 days after mamma. John Knipp struggled with Holy, meaning that “hole he” dug was deep. Randall Haltom at least had a response to the word Manifold, meaning “man I fold” the laundry pretty darn good.

PROGRAM

Randy Henderson introduced Dorothy Barnett, the new Reno County 20/20 Growth Coordinator. Dorothy has lived in Hutchinson for the last 25 years and has been very involved in the community. Dorothy will focus on community development growth in her position in the entire county.

Mrs. Barnett announced the Reno County Teen Job Fair coming Saturday, May 5th from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Materials and information was distributed to all Reno County schools and over 100 teenagers who are interested in jobs will attend the event. She is asking for employers to come to the event to talk to the teenagers and even pre-screen them for employment. The teens can also be interested in temporary projects such as painting and mowing.

Dorothy has a public office located at the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce. The Coalition is currently working on an incentive program to move families to Reno County, one family at a time.

Also, please keep the daughter of Pat Voth in your thoughts and prayers.

None at this meeting.

Remember to bring a guest with you to the Chamber After-Hours this Thursday (see details below).

TUIT

Again, no Tuit report. Maybe we should let brother Luke McConnaughy bring it back this Friday. Several members have mentioned how much they have missed the little fellow. Besides, without the tuit report to fill space, we are making our Sergeants think way too hard!!

FINES

City Councilman Bob Bush played Sergeant, and since he now has taxing powers, he invited Rep. Mark Treaster to carry the toilet.

The first tax was levied on Marion Miller for ignoring the trash around his table. Jack Mace paid a buck to invite us all to the Kansas Mennonite Mens Chorus performance in Lindsborg on Sunday, April 22. Former City Councilman Dean Brigman paid a late tax, and this editor was fined for confusing members names in this mornings Board Meeting.

Then Bob introduced a Tax-the-Rich program to remind us all how rich we are in the light of the past weeks tragedy. Oh well, its for the kids, and it is great to be alive.

PROGRAM

Brenda Janda introduced Jerry Dalton, one of our newest members, to explain how care for the aging is changing, and why Good Samaritan Homes nationwide are developing Endowment Associations.

Our parents lived much simpler lives then we do today, and they carried those habits into retirement. The Baby Boomers have much higher expectations for their retirement , resulting in a current demand for skilled caregivers that is outstripping the supply. For every three on-staff caregivers that leave the system, only one enters, and the future looks even dimmer. Good Samaritan Homes are facing this challenge by raising endowment funds to provide educational grants for current and future caregivers to fill the void.

Locally, Brenda and Jerry are seeking both funds and leadership to bring this effort to the attention of the community. Good Samaritan currently has 154 residents and 114 employees and provides an economic impact of $28 million annually to Hutchinson and Reno County. Jerry made a solid case for AMBUCS becoming involved in this effort. Many of their residents are physically challenged, and the need for therapists is great. He challenged each of us to consider becoming involved in this effort.

Thanks to Jerry for a very enlightening program.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS: We are sponsoring Aprils Chamber After Hours get-together this coming Thursday. It is being held from 5:30 to 7:00 at TECHs Training Facility at 3000 E Ave B. This is our chance to show the business community what the AMBUCS are all about. We will have Amtrykes on display, brochures and other information about our chapter available, and TECH will provide a tour of their facilities. If you are not a Chamber member, there is a $5 fee to defray the cost of snacks and drinks. Lets use this opportunity to promote what we do and encourage the business community to promote AMBUC membership within their organizations.

TUIT

Nothing to report as Monte McConnaughy still has it, but was not in attendance. Monte better have lots and lots of fines for as long as he has had the TUIT!

Publisher’s Note: Actually, Monte and family have had a number of medical issues lately. Those have kept him away. Let’s keep them in our minds and in our prayers.

FINES

Kicklighter fined Jack Mace, Mark Treaster, Randall Haltom, John Knipp and Luke McConnaughy for all being late to the meeting. Preston Clark paid a fine after Kicklighter kissed up to him after looking at a remodel job and home of Preston’s in Hyde Park. Eric Steinle, Randall Haltom and Stan Macgirvin were also fined. Purchased Fines: Doug Foss announced that a child in Wichita that needs an AMTRYKE can’t come to a breakfast in Hutchinson. Mark Treaster invited all of us to a reception on Monday, 04/16/07, from 4:30 to 6:30pm for Lt. Governor, Mark Clarkson; oops..that has already passed. Eric Steinle discussed something about global warming. Kicklighter completed an AMBUCS pin check and fined everyone not wearing one. Steinle was fined later for introducing our guest speaker as an Air Force man instead of the Navy.

PROGRAM

Chris Orwoll, the new leader at the Cosmosphere shared his background with us and also what direction the Cosmosphere is headed. Chris grew up in Southern California and went to the Naval Academy, graduating in 1986. Mr. Orwoll explained is Naval career which included work on submarines and living in many different location around the world. Chris was planning a trip to the Cosmosphere with his family and was checking online when he came across the job opportunity that was posted on the website. He pursued the opportunity and he is now here in Hutchinson.

Chris noted that there have not been a lot of changes to the Cosmosphere over the last few years and he want to change that. He would like to update the history in the museum as it currently stops at 1973. Changes include new displays in the lobby area changing the look and feel. Chris and his team are doing a lot of brain storming and strategy review at this time. They would like to expand the space works portion of the Cosmosphere and market the cosmosphere as the premiere place for restoration of spacecraft, creating models and re-production. There will be camps from folks in foreign countries such as South Africa. The Cosmosphere has purchased the land where Hutchinson Floral was located. The building will be torn down and they would like to create an education building and then use the current space at the museum from more exhibits.

PROGRAM

Tomi Ann Foust, the Marketing and PR Coordinator from Big Brothers\Big Sisters of Reno County was our guest speaker. Tomi did a great job exciting, educating and re-introducing the program to us. The demand for Big Brothers Big Sisters services has never been greater. They are not simply a feel-good cause. A quality relationship between an adult and a youngster, often from two different cultures – sometimes words apart – requires a professional system.

The agency helps children age 5 – 17 years old. Bigs are paired with children with similar interests. There is at least a one year commitment with the match seeing each other 2 – 4 times/month, 2 – 4 hours/visit. The result of the match is a one-to-one friendship between a child and a volunteer. Big Brothers Big Sisters do not replace the parent, but are an additional adult that a child can have as a role model and friend.

If you would like to find out more, call 662-8161.

TUIT

Luke McConnaughy brought the TUIT back for brother Monte. Many felt this was an infraction of the TUIT Rules of Order so the Big Hatters in charge left it with Luke for another week while they check the fine print.

FINES

Big Hatters Doug Foss and Scott Saylor were acting Sgt. at Arms.

They fined Pam Brooks and Jerry Dalton for arriving after the bell. Steve Harmon was fined for not supplying (golf) balls with paint logos to a certain golf-playing member named Doug. Steves comment Its hard to find the right balls. Jeff Brewer was fined for skirting duty when asked to be a Sgt. today.

Stan Macgirvin, Guy Gann, Terry Brigman, Tony Powers, Fred Conner and Steve Conard for not wearing their Big Hat today. (I dont know about the rest of you but my wife forgot to set mine out.) Doyle Ehling paid to announce that he was a 5X-grandpa with the birth of his granddaughter Ayla Aileen Booe.

The rest were fined for either missing AMBUC pins or no breakfast cards.

PROGRAM

Doyle Ehling introduced his long time friend and shirttail relative Bronc Rumford. Bronc owns and operates the Rumford Cattle Co. in Abbeyville, which has been family owned for many years, supplying rodeos around the world with rodeo stock. Floyd Rumford started the Abbeyville rodeo in his hometown in 1963.

Bronc was contacted early in 2005 through diplomatic channels to supply three barrel racing horses, three bucking horses, two pick up horses and two ponies for a special event in the Middle Eastern country of Oman. Omans Royal Calvary Equestrian and Camel Show was held New Years Day in the capital city of Muscat for the Sultan Oaboos Bin Said and 3,000 specially invited dignitaries and guests. The Commander of Omans Royal Calvary extended an invitation to the United States to participate, specifying rodeo as the American theme. The U.S. portion would be 9 minutes of the 90-minute show.

Bronc along with another employee trailered the horses to Chicago where they were quarantined and crated in special containers for the overseas trip. They accompanied them along with a professional handler on the 23-hour cargo flight from Chicago to Brussels, Belgium. All were transferred to another plane for the flight to Dubai, United Arab Emirates and then by trailer again for 5 hours across the desert to Muscat.

The show included 1,200 horses, 800 camels and 5,000 people and the cost, $10 million dollars. The staging area outside the 12,000-seat area covered 4 acres. The Sultan personally chose the music for each portion of the show and each act had to coincide with it exactly. There were 14 days of rehearsal, prior to the show that everyone had to attend. It was sunny everyday except for the 2 days prior to the show, which it rained. They had not had any significant rainfall in 5 years in Muscat.

Needless to say but the arena floor was a muddy mess. The morning of the day of the show the Sultan brought in about 1,000 men and heavy earthmoving equipment and replaced the entire dirt floor of the outdoor arena so the show could go on as planned.

Bronc said the 10 horses used in the show were sold to Omans Royal Calvary as it was less expensive to do that than pay the $6,000 each to ship them back.

If you missed signing the petition it was also e-mailed to the membership.

PROGRAM

John Knipp introduced Dianne Canon a member of the Hutchinson Tree Board.

Diane informed us of an emergency situation taking place around Hutchinson called Pine Wilt Disease. This disease is being carried by a beetle and is affecting Scotch and Austrian Pine trees. There is no known treatment and the tree must be removed immediately to prevent spread to other trees. The affected tree must be burned, buried or if chipped, the chips must be composted correctly to kill the insect larva. This is a serious problem and the affected tree will die within weeks. If you have a suspect tree, contact the county extension agent immediately.

Another project with the Hutchinson Tree Board is the Trees for Tomorrow Fund. This fund, established through the Hutchinson Community Foundation, is a way for individuals and business to contribute a living gift towards the planting of trees in public areas around Hutchinson. Besides tree planting, tree education and tree related community projects all dedicated to beautifying Hutchinson. Diane also explained the citys 2007 tree planting cost share program. The city will reimburse residence owners south of 11th avenue up to 75% of tree cost up to $75, in accordance with the economic revitalization program for the southern half of the city. Residence owners north of 11th avenue will be reimbursed up to 50% of tree cost up to $50. Only new trees planted on street right of way are eligible for reimbursement and distance varies by area. Other stipulations such as having the site and tree variety pre-approved by Bob Hunter, City Forester are required.

If you have any questions or need more information on any of these programs you can reach Bob at 694-1900.
