Guests

Leslie Kamp, guest and sister of Scott Potucek.

TUIT

This editor finally got the opportunity after 3 weeks of lugging this glorified space junk to collect fines.

Tony P. didnt ask when I came to his office. Steve C. had multiple violations at church and on the phone. Jay P. was disinterested at 17th & Severance. Dan P. didnt ask on the phone or at 56th & Plum. Larry S. did make a gesture at 17th & Severance, but it had nothing to do with the TUIT. Rick M. asked who had the TUIT at Early Ed. Preston made me show the TUIT at 1st and Jefferson. Chuck P. didnt ask in the roundabout. Jim K. didnt ask at the golf scramble. Steve H. didnt ask either.

Then, the TUIT was promptly delivered to Brad Daddy Thompson for safekeeping.

FINES

Sgt. Davis and his bacon devouring assistant Jeff B. went to work.

Curtis M. was fined for the stacked golf team last week. Brad T. received a nostalgia tax. Preston received a fine performed by mirrors.

The dark side of AMBUCS dissipated and gratitude appeared.

Jo Ann thanked those who assisted with the TECH clients displaced by flooding. Jeff B. thanked the membership for the AMBUC scramble with the greatest participation ever. Leslie Kamp was grateful for her Moms successful surgery.

PROGRAM

Randy Hendrickson (Who’s that?) introduced our guest speaker, Hutchinson Zoo Director, Charlotte Poepperling.

Our zoo became a victim of the recent flooding as demonstrated by the PowerPoint presentation. May 23rd began with the birth of two bison calves, but then the rain began. The pond overflowed. The stalls filled with water. The service barn flooded. The habitat building had the carpet ruined. The granary filled with water. The service road was submerged. That was just the first episode. The visitor center flooded in the basement on June 2 and July 5.

Flooding problems were due to the high water table, over seven inches of rain in a single day and extra runoff water from the Hutchinson Public Works Facility. Changes are being made for new drainage on Elm Street; for a new rehab facility on higher ground and a grain bin well above ground level.

The Zoo has received a $50,000.00 donation from the local Cargill plant to assist with their recovery.

Hopefully, the entire zoo facility will be open sometime between August 1st and the 15th.

This editor identified Weston Unruh as a guest of the wrong Nazarene.

Greg West was actually the host.

Jeff Brewer said he never has a guest so we know it wasnt him.

TUIT

Greg West collected premiums from Duke W. bicycling past his house, Lee G. golfing, Terry B. talking with Gregs mother and Brad T. for talking to his realtor without asking about the TUIT.

Preston C. asked at church.

Then Greg, still embittered for not receiving credit for bringing a guest, delivered the TUIT to this editor.

(Thanks again!)

PROGRAM

The “real” sheriff, Randy Henderson, introduced Chuck Peterson as our guest speaker. Chuck is our resident diving aficionado, as in the deep blue sea.

Chuck presented a 24 minute video of his diving vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands located approximately 250 miles south of Miami. Book the trip two years in advance, bring your own dive equipment, leave your shoes behind and live nothing but diving for a solid week. Granted, you need more than basic diving skills, but this is about a divers paradise with many varieties of marine life and a deep wall of nearly 7000 feet. A specially equipped 130 foot yacht for diving made life a breeze.

We appreciate Chuck sharing his undersea experiences with those of us who will not see more than a muddy Kansas lake bottom.

PROGRAM

Randy Henderson introduced our guest speaker, Bill Guy, Reno County Emergency Management Director.

Between late winter snowstorms, flooding and windstorms, Bill Guy has been more than busy. Whenever lives and/or property are endangered, Bills department is directly involved in coordinating multiple agencies in the relief effort. In the most recent flood alone, 400 homes were affected. Many private businesses assisted by donating supplies, equipment or labor.

If you or your business have suffered damage, please notify Bill Guy so that the information may be included in the total damage estimate used for disaster declaration and relief.

Bill also warned of fraudulent schemes involving individuals on the telephone claiming to be FEMA officials while asking for bank account numbers and phony contractors asking for money up front but not completing any construction.

Finally, the water from the floods is now spawning mosquito populations that pose both a nuisance and the threat of West Nile disease.

Bill thanked the community for its continued support in these times of crisis.

TUIT

Regardless of the gender of the TUIT, it still remains in the possession of Pam Brooks for a second consecutive week. (Political correctness is preventing this editor from commenting further.)

FINES

Theres a new Sheriff in town; and he is not of the kinder and gentler persuasion. Sgt. Ward Davis and his little buddy, Doug Foss, administered justice in their own self-centered sort of way.

Stan Macgirvin was fined apparently for flinching since we did not really see him do anything wrong. Rick y Mitchell was fined for signing his name to the ladies closest to the pin contest at the Boys and Girls Club golf tournament. Larry S., Dave S. and Monte M. were all assessed the early withdrawal tax for leaving last weeks meeting before the program. The real Sheriff was fined for not mentioning AMBUCS in the automated phone calls warning county residents about potential flooding. Curtis M. was fined for not mentioning AMBUCS on the radio. Tom Stantons late fine was paid by the sheriff. The rest of the tardies were not so lucky: Jo Ann W., Rick y and this editor all paid late fees.

PROGRAM

Chairperson Randy Hendrickson introduced Craig Williams of the Family Childrens Theatre as our guest speaker.

< The Family Childrens Theatre (FTC) is a regional, non-profit, educational and arts organization. Live theatre utilizing persons of all ages is the primary focus of the FTC. The productions feature quality, wholesome, clean family entertainment. Renovations to the exterior of the facility, formerly known as the Flag Theatre, are nearing completion. A grand re-opening is scheduled in July. The FTC is in its 18th season having presented 107 shows.

Visit the FTC website at www.familychildrenstheatre.com for the listing of the upcoming shows including Nunsense, June 14-17, 2007 and Youre A Grand Old Flag, July 12-15, 2007. TUIT

Scott Potucek finally returned with the TUIT. He received communications from the following members who failed to ask: Don G, Curtis M. Dennis R, and Jim K, his boss (way to nail the Sergeant, Scott).

There followed a weird conversation about whether the TUIT is male or female, the decision finally being that it is a eunuch.

Have fun with the eunuch TUIT this week, PAM BROOKS.

FINES

Sergeant Jim started the festivities by recognizing all the veterans in attendance at todays meeting. Vern Doc Powers won the informal contest for the oldest veteran. Although accused of serving in WWI, he is actually a veteran of WWII.

You remember the guys who barreled out of last weeks meeting just as the program was introduced? For those who missed their exit, it was Cliff Miller, Larry Sloan, Nathan Meyer, and Stan Macgirvin. They paid their $1 this week.

Mark Clark and Curtis Mitchell were interviewed on the radio this week and failed to mention AMBUCS. When will they learn the rules? Pam Brooks was fined for being late, and Tony Powers paid his quarter for failing to introduce his guest (apparently he didnt realize CPO Drush was coming as this weeks speaker).

Monte McConnaughy, while not a new member, has missed several meetings lately and apparently forgot Sergeants Rule #1: Dont get ahead of him in the food line; a $1 memory lesson.

PROGRAM

Join the Navy and See the World. Chief Petty Officer Chris Drush did exactly that, and he wouldnt exchange his experiences for anything.

CPO Drush is currently assigned to Hutchinsons Navy Recruiting Office, but he has spent much of his career maintaining the hydraulic catapult devices aboard the Navys aircraft carriers. Those are the giant cable contraptions that fling the planes into take-off and apply the brakes when they land. He has served on the USS Eisenhower and the USS Carl Vincent during his various tours of duty. He will remain in Hutchinson for the next 6 months, then will return to Washington State for a tour with the USS Lincoln. He named off the top of his head at least 15 places in the world that he has visited during his 14 years in the Navy.

He intends to retire in about 6 years (at age 40) and play golf for the rest of his life. Even if he decides to stay in the work force, he will have a Bachelors and maybe a Masters Degree paid for by the Navy.

Currently, his is recruiting the top students from area high schools and is experiencing much success with the Nuclear Power Program offered by the Navy. When he throws out some of the $ and training available, it sounds very attractive, especially to top high school students who may not see him or herself as desiring the college route. In fact, when Nathan Meyer asked for the age group range for such programs and learned it was from 17 to 34, several members seemed ready for an interview.

We thank CPO Drush for an entertaining and fascinating program.

Club Announcements

Officers, Old and New: Since this was President Wards last meeting, he took some time to thank those who made his job a lot easier. We all thanked Ward for his leadership and wished him the best with his sergeants duties next year (Yeah! Right!).

Eric also expressed his appreciation to his program committee for a job well done this past year not one meeting without a program.

Rudy Henderson will be our Program Committee Chair for the coming year, so please pass your ideas on to him.

TECH/IHS: JoAnn Williams announced that one of TECHs newer houses was flooded this week. It is going to require extensive clean-up and repair, so anyone wishing to volunteer to help, contact her or Interfaith Housing.

Preston Clark: Having announced in last Friday’s meeting that his mother was really struggling health-wise, on Tuesday evening, May 29, Preston sent a mass e-mail telling of her death. In case you missed it, an exerpt is quoted here:

This afternoon at 3:40 my mother, Ruth Mae Paschall Clark, went home to live with the Lord. She looked forward to this moment all of her life and talked about it often. She walked so closely with the Lord that her life became His life, and His life became hers. She lived her faith daily and shared it with everyone. She loved unconditionally. I will miss her answering the phone “Good evening, God loves you”. She taught me to love Him as well. I couldn’t ask for a better mother, one whose love was deeper than the imagination can go, and one who expressed it every time we talked. I will miss her every day for the rest of my life, but I WILL be with her again.

Please keep Preston and his family in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days.

Big Hatters Meeting: The Big Hat Club will hold its first meeting of the new year at 6:15 next Friday morning at the Town Club. Come with you thoughts on what the mission of this group should be for the upcoming year.

Becky Dyer, School Resource Officer for Sheriff Randy Henderson

guest of Program Manager, Eric Steinle

FINES

Sheriff Jim Kicklighter and Deputy Steve Conard got things started by fining Representative Mark Treaster for being interviewed about the gambling issue in Kansas and not mentioning AMBUCS.

There followed a level of conversation that should not be reprinted (call it Technical Difficulties). Well leave it with Sheriff Jim and Bob Bush both paying fines.

Scott Saylor paid to remind members about next Fridays Installation Banquet and to request the location of the sign up sheet he has been passing around for the last several weeks. It was finally decided that someone responsible knew where the list was hiding. As the new sheet passed around, members were asked to sign up if they hadnt already done so or sign up again and Scott would merge the two lists together.

Confused? Hope Scott ends up with a good count.

TUIT

Scott Potucek has carried the tuit this week, and his boss (Sheriff Jim) offered that he had not seen Scott all week, including this morning. Thus, there was no report this morning. At this point, Jim turned the meeting over to todays program manager Eric Steinle.

At that very moment, there was a scurrying noise that sounded like rats leaving a sinking ship. Stan Macgirvin, Cliff Miller, Larry Sloan, and Nathan Meyer all bolted for the door. Annoyed at anyone leaving without paying an early withdrawal tax, Jim tried to run them down, but the fugitives were much too quick. However, names were taken and fines will be levied.

PROGRAM

Program manager Eric Steinle introduced Becky Dyer who is a School Resource Officer for Sheriff Randy Henderson. She spoke about law enforcements new program to counter the latest drug problem, the abuse of prescription and (O)ver (T)he (C)ounter drugs, specifically cough medicine.

While the abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs has been declining, the abuse of legal drugs is skyrocketing. In a recent survey, teens were asked if they knew someone who was abusing prescription or OTC drugs. One in three responded yes to prescription drugs; one in four responded yes to OTC, specifically cough medicine. The most prevalent age group is early teens (13-16). Prescription drugs can be readily obtained from the familys medicine cabinet, and OTC drugs can be purchased almost anywhere. Studies indicate that young people believe them to be less harmful then hard drugs, and legal.

Becky became involved with this problem locally and networked nationally with the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, which represents all of the major manufacturers of OTC drugs. Through this involvement, she interviewed and was approved to be one of five moms to lead the CHPAs educational program called Five Moms. This program is targeted at parents, and serves to educate them to the dangers of the abuse of cough medicine.

The active ingredient that attracts the teens is dextromethorphan, which is found in over 100 OTC medicines. Five Moms want parents to know that dex is not dangerous unless it is abused by ingesting large quantities, such as the entire bottle in a short period of time. The kids report that they can obtain a cool high, but as in other experimentation, it takes more to obtain the high over time. While dex is not in itself physically addicting, the activity of abuse appears to be.

Five Moms encourages parents to be proactive in tackling this problem. Check your medicine cabinets regularly and throw out medication no longer being used. Be aware of your kids Internet activity, where websites encouraging the abuse of cough medicine and offer explicit instructions how and with what to combine it with other drugs to improve the high. Beware of your childrens use of terms such as Dex, DXM, Robo, Skittles, Syrup, Triple-C, and Tussin. Robo-ing, Robo-tripping, and Skittling are used to identify the activity.

If you would like more information, log on to www.FiveMoms.com, www.drugfree.org, or www.chpa-info.org.

He spotted Paul Brown on his way to a neighbors house (apparently Maggie bought a bedroom suite and Paul got the job of moving it), and Paul did not ask about the tuit as Dennis drove by. Al Strecker sent everyone an e-mail, but forgot to personalize Denniss by addressing the TUIT.

He also collected fines from Jack Mace, Terry Brigman, Randall Haltom, Curtis Mitchell, and Jo Ann Williams.

He then paid his dollar and passed his friend off to SCOTT POTUCEK.

Beware the artists son this week.

FINES

Sheriffs Corner:

Jim Kicklighter and Chuck Peterson donned their badges and laid down the law for today.

Jim fined himself for being late, and then realized that it was really a STUPID tax. Mark Clark was so proud of his picture taken while shaking hands with President Bush that he was handing out copies (color if you were will to pay extra). Curtis Mitchell was also in the picture, but was much more humble still cost him a dollar.

Apparently the Edward Jones boys have excess funds in their advertising budgets. Last week Dan Power was fined for having 4 radio spots run in about 5 minutes time. This week, Darren Wicks got caught for promoting IRAs before tax income tax filing deadline. Lets see—the tax filing deadline was April 17th and this is the second week of May.

Doug (we dont need no stinkin basement) Foss ran for cover from the tornado and ended up at Jay Pitzers house. It only cost him a dollar to repurchase the jacket he left behind in his excitement over surviving the big scare.

Darren Wicks, Jim Seitnater, and Jo Ann Williams all paid a dollar to thank all their fellow members who volunteered for the Downtown Hopps fundraiser for TECH last Friday evening. It was a huge success, raising over $10,000.

Doyle Ehling announced that he and his family would be attending Kansas States graduation in support of their daughter-in-law, Tara Jean, who has completed her degree in Veterinary Medicine. Monte McConnaughy has established a website to aid lost dogs in finding their home. If you lose or find a dog, go to lostdoghutch.com and follow the instructions. Great idea, Monte, and good P.R. for your new business. Jay Pitzer paid a dollar to promote ticket sales for the Hutchinson Community Concert Series going on right now. Tickets can be purchased at the First National Bank lobby.

PROGRAM

Guy Gann introduced Gary Bornholdt of Bornholdt Plantland, located at 1508 W. 4th. Guy must have asked Gary a bunch of questions about the care and feeding of his lawn, because Gary came primed and ready to impart his knowledge on how to approach caring for your lawn in light of this years exceedingly wet spring.

We are now 10 ahead of normal for the year, which probably means we wont see another drop until fall. Seriously, we were encouraged to turn our watering systems off for now. Gary suggested turning them back on when your lawn starts to take on a slight blue cast or the temperature reaches beyond 90 degrees. Then, water deeply rather then frequently. He suggests using a slow-release fertilizer this year.

Also, this is expected to be a bad year for grubs, so watch for brown spots that grow rapidly around the July 4th timeframe.

This editor tried keeping up with Garys flow of knowledge, but failed miserably. It is safe to say that he is well-versed on anything that is green and grows, so if you have questions about anything from lawns to replacing trees lost to Westars power line purge, see Gary and his crew, and they will fix you right up.

Thanks to Gary and Guy for a great program.
