Celeste Gaines From Red Baron Ambucs in Salina sponsor of Peggy McConnaughy

Sgts Corner:

Stan M assisted Ward this morning. He managed to place himself at the end of the food line, then fined

everyone who ate before him. Did he notify any of us that he was helping Ward this morning? Did

he wear a tag or a silly hat? No!! Then, if that wasnt cheap enough, the guys checked for invitation cards.

Sounds like a severe lack of material. Tom S, Kip H, and Mark T all paid their proud Jayhawk fine without

even being asked. Since the Tuit is with Dennis Reiser, who is in Salina with his ailing father, no report

today.

Announcements:

Dennis Reiser please keep Dennis and his family in your prayers. His father was taken to the hospital

in Salina for emergency surgery. On Friday morning he was still in very serious status. Later reports

are that he got through the surgery and is making a slow recovery.

Committee are as follows:

Hutchinson Special Olympics Team – $1,000

Motion by Preston C, seconded by Kip H, to approve the above contributions

A request from TECH for help with their computer lab wish list was tabled until the status of

our budget for contributions can be verified. It will be taken up at the Board Retreat on Jan

25th.

The Executive Board Retreat has been changed to Friday, Jan 25th, from 11:00 to 2:00 at the Airport Steakhouse

Program:

Tom Stanton introduced Mary Messamore, the Director for Emergency Communications for Reno County.

Mary has worked in community communications for almost 30 years in such diverse places as Colby, Butler

County, Sherman County, and since 2005 Hutchinson/Reno County. Her department has established a back-up

emergency center for this region, including 19 counties. It is located at the old airbase south of Hutchinson, and

is the only site of its type in the country. Much of the funding for this project came from a Federal Homeland

Security grant of $300,000, and she describes it as state of the art. It was brought on-line just before the

Greensburg tornado and got a real baptism of fire. The center took calls from all over the country as friends and

family sought the status of Greensburg residents they were unable to contact. She even got to be on CNN for a

few minutes as they sought information about the disaster. The center is staffed locally by her department of 15

to 18 dispatchers at the beginning of an emergency. Other dispatchers from the 23 agencies that are part of the

region join locals as quickly as they can arrive.

Big Winners

The 50/50 pot winner got off with the money before the editor could determine his/her identity. Come to next

Fridays meeting to find out.

The newsletter drawing has been re-instituted since it is now available on the website. The winner was Cliff

Sergeants Corner:

Ward Davis and Paul Brown roamed the Town Club, handing out fines and, in general, being annoying. Greg W, Doyle E, and Doug F all paid for their failure to make the start of the mornings Community Service Committee meeting. All KU fans were fined for the Orange Bowl victory. Only Steve Harmon admitted his support by anteing up his $1. And although he never openly admitted it, Brad Thompson paid a newly-wed fine. Congratulations and best wishes to Brad and his bride. Steve Harmon reported on his week with the TUIT. He caught Ward D, Jeff B, Jay P, and Eric S. Steve Conard paid a $1 to confirm that he has closed Central Printing and is now a sales consultant for Waynes Printing. The Tuit then passed to Dennis Reiser.

Program: Lynnette Hilty Marketing Director KansasUndergroundSaltMuseum

Most of the news about the SaltMuseum recently has focused on funding and staff cutbacks. Just this week the City Commission voted to provide an additional $35,000 to keep the facility operating through the winter and spring. Lynnettes is concentrating getting the word out that good things are still happening with Hutchinsons newest attraction. They are in the middle of a membership drive, with $1,300 raised to date. Both family and corporate sponsorships are available with varying levels of support and member benefits. Museum Gift Certificates are available online and the gift store will be available soon. A Loyalty Club that encourages repeat visitation is being well accepted, and the facility is available for Special Events, even underground weddings. The museum relies heavily upon volunteers Brad Thompson and Fred Conner both serve as tour guides. As Marketing Director, Lynnette is particularly excited about the $25,000 grant received by the Museum and the Cosmosphere to establish a joint marketing effort. She also announced an upcoming event in May 2008. Dr. Russell Breeland has been studying fluid inclusion in salt samples taken from the mine and will be displaying the results of his research in May. Dr. Breeland is very well established in his field, and his work will likely be on semi-permanent display here in Hutchinson. Although attendance is down, Lynnette still suggests making tour reservations because the number of tours has been reduced as well. Call 662-1428 to reserve a place for your tour.

The 50/50 drawing provided $26 to Steve Conard. May this serve as a good luck charm for your new business endeavor.

Guest: Lowell Peachey CEO of Mennonite Manor Guest of Randy Hendrickson & todays program.

Special Guests:

For the first time in several years, our wives were invited for a champaign breakfast and a rose courtesy of the Big Hat Club. Wives in attendance were Sonja Brigman, Bonnie Ehling, Marie Mitchell, Virginia Hymer, Jan Strecker, Anne Potucek, Nancy Conard, Barb Sloan, Donna Pitzer, Laverna Shaw, Jill Foss, Sharon Harmon, Pat Brewer, Aavon Powers, Linda Peterson, Jane Knipp, Valerie Powers, Maria Kicklighter, and Elaine Fallon. Deferring to Good Taste with so many wives in attendance, the Sergeants Corner was cancelled.

Announcements:

With todays contributions, the Payton Mitchell Memorial Fund has met its goal of $1,000. A final accounting will be presented at the next meeting.

With the holiday season behind us, the regularly scheduled committee meeting will be back to their normal dates in Jan 08. The Community Service Committee will meet at 6:00AM next Friday (Jan 4th). The Executive Board will meet at 6:15AM on Friday Jan 11th.

Program:

Lowell Peachey became the CEO of the Mennonite Manor in South Hutchinson for the last six months. While born in Virginia, his family moved to Kansas when he was six, so he considers Kansas his home. He has held numerous positions, both in the banking and not-for-profit arenas. He spent time during the early 1990s assigned to the Mennonite Economic Development Association in Haiti. He returned to the mainland, and spent a decade in various positions in small, privately owned banks. Previous to coming to the Mennonite Manor, he was the CFO of Bethel College in North Newton. With this varied background, he is in a unique position to compare and contrast managing in these 2 different arenas. His observation is that there are more similarities than one might think. As a manager in either area, he sees the stewardship of the entitys funds as paramount. Thus, managing the bottom line is appropriate regardless of the entitys profit status. Too many non-profits do not provide for a positive bottom line, sacrificing long-term stability of the organization. He will encourage his board to operate under this philosophy and build his business plan and leadership team accordingly.

50/50 Winner Bob Bush the $32 pot was donated to the Payton Mitchell Memorial Fund.

Newsletter 12/21/2007

Guests: Brian Clennan City Engineer & todays program Guest of Dean Brigman.

Sergeants Corner:

Welcome back to Sgt Davis and his deputy Jeff B. If you have been keeping up with the local news, Dean Young Radical Brigman has been promoting a major rod and custom car show in Downtown Hutchinson for the first weekend of October 2008. Guess you call his fine a mid-life crisis penalty, but think Dean is a little old for that. Darren W was fined for something, and then continued to mumble under his breath until he had paid $5. Its expensive to hack off the Sgts. Real Sheriff Randy H paid a $1 to recognize the AMBUCS for opening up the Ice Cream Booth and storing some of the overflow perishable foodstuffs for the Red Cross Emergency Shelter Operation during the recent ice storm and power outage. Tom H paid to announce a vocation change effective in Jan 2008. Tom will be leaving Alltel and establishing a small business consulting service with a partner. There go the cheap cell phone fines. Best wishes Tom on his new endeavor.

Tony Powers finally returned after carrying the TUIT for 4 weeks. After imparting his excitement about living with the Big Washer for one twelfth of a year, he fined every member in attendance for sticking him with the thing. Some of us were not sure how that was OUR fault, but after all, its for the Kids.

Announcements:

The Payton Mitchell fund is now approaching $800 after its second week. Our goal is to raise $1,000 to present a William White Scholarship in Paytons memory. This is strictly a volunteer project with no club funds committed at this time. If each member would contribute $20, the goal can be reached. Please give your contribution to Don Grossardt or Doug Foss. If you wish to send a check, make it payable to Hutchinson AMBUCS and mark it for the Payton Mitchell Memorial Fund.

January 26, 2008 is the date for the Big Hat Casino fund-raiser to replenish their funds used to upgrade our website. Please sign up at the meeting or contact Jay P.

Program:

Dean Brigman introduced Brian Clennan, who was recently named as the head of the City Engineering department. Brian is a Licensed Professional Engineer with a masters degree from Kansas State. He comes to Hutchinson from a private civil engineering firm in the Kansas City area with a great deal of experience in traffic management. When asked what was the biggest difference between working in the government sector vs. the private sector, he responds that it is the number of projects requiring his involvement. In the private sector he generally oversaw one or two projects at a time. Currently the city has 20 significant projects in process. His staff consists of 1 secretary, 3 engineers, 4 construction observers, 2 design techs, 2 traffic signal techs, and 1 surveyor. The functions of his department fall into 3 major categories Construction Observation, Design and Project Management, and basic Engineering Services. The largest project currently in process is the Reverse Osmosis Treatment Facility at 23rd and Severance and related activities.

AMTRYKE Presentation:

Bill Reasor of Wichita was present to accept an Amtryke for his daughter Megan. She could not be in attendance since she is on a respirator overnight and was too weak to handle the early morning ride from Wichita. She suffers from the results of Spinal Meningitis and became acquainted with the Amtryke through the therapy program at Wesley Hospital. He father provided a wonderful testimony to the positive effect it has had on her recovery.

50/50 drawing – $39 to Jeff Brewer, who donated it to Megan and her dad.

On December 28th the breakfast will be a Champagne breakfast with the spouses invited to join us. See you there

Newsletter 12/14/2007

No Guests this week. We’re falling down on the job. The membership contest runs through the month of December, so bring guests, sign new members, and get in on the winnings.

Sergeant’s Corner:

With Sgt Davis not in attendance and Tony (the TUIT carrier) Powers still missing, this could have been a real quiet breakfast. However, leave it to Brad Thompson and Fred (Santa) Conner to liven things up in their absence. When Tony is gone, someone always steps up to sell 50/50 tickets. Not this week. So, since nobody contributed voluntarily, the Sgt’s decided to fine everyone $2 for failing to pass the Ambuc leadership development test for this meeting. While they were at it, they checked for breakfast cards. If you didn’t have a signed one on you, you got to buy one for $1. There followed lots of dead-air while these fines were being collected. We need a second toilet for days like today. Jeff B. was assessed a crying tax for his excuse for not standing in for Tony. Preston C, Eric S, and Al S were fined for being late to this morning’s Board meeting. Steve H paid for having a fancy new TV at his house for several weeks and not taking time to hook it up yet. Scott P, Sunoco’s safety guru, paid for not having his house up-to-code when the electrician showed up to power him up after Monday’s ice storm. And Jay P was accessed a noise tax for being noisy if you can imagine that.

Memorial for Payton Mitchell:

It is with great sadness that the club shared the loss of Curtis and Pam Mitchell’s 5 month old baby Payton.

An apparent victim of Sudden Infant Death syndrome, he failed to wake up from a nap earlier this week. As this tragedy was discussed, Doug Foss suggested the club raise funds form its members to fund an Ambuc National Scholarship in Payton’s memory. This is strictly a volunteer effort, not a motion to use club funds. All of the fine and 50/50 money was used as seed money, and those in attendance were asked to contribute $20 each to reach the goal of $1,000 to fund this scholarship. By the time the meeting was over, the club was over half-way to that goal. If you were not in attendance and wish to contribute, please give your money to Don Grossardt, Doug Foss, or Al Strecker. Make any checks payable to the Hutchinson Ambucs and note Payton Mitchell Memorial. Please keep the entire Mitchell family in your prayers as they work through this tragedy during the holiday season.

Announcements:

The Big Hat club is hosting a Casino Night on January 26, 2008 to replace some of the funds the Big Hatters

are paying to update our website. Jay P will be sending around a sign-up sheet, so let’s step up and invest about 3-4 hours to make around $800 for the club.

Speaking of the website, it will be completed and running within the next 30 days. If you have club-related pictures, please send or bring them to Al Strecker at al@alstrecker.com. Due to some communication problems, this weekly newsletter has not been available through the website for several months. This and future newsletters will be accessible at www.hutchambucs.org by clicking on Current Newsletter.

Guests: Jim Shaw, retired, a guest of Fred Conner. Coach Ryan Swanson and Assistant Coach Dave Brown of Hutchinson Community College. Jason Jones, former member, director of the Ft. Madison, Iowa YMCA.

Tuit Report: Doug Foss began the collection process by fining Mark C. because he saw Mark’s wife at Al Strecker’s garage sale; and she did not ask about the TUIT. Likewise, Al S. did not ask at the garage sale. Jay P. was fined for not asking at Subway. S. Eric was fined for not asking when trying to peddle “school stuff.” Duke was fined for not asking at praise team practice even though Doug was in another part of the church. Rick M. and Doyle asked. Since we are losing Jo Ann Williams to a career move in the not too distant future, she was blessed with the TUIT for one final time.

Bob B. was fined for his Vegas trip that he claimed was “business.” Mark C. was fined for running his car into Don G.’s partner’s car at Anchor Away. Don G. was fined for driving a Ford Fusion since his brand-new Lexus was wrecked in a matter of hours after he took possession. Duke was fined for hearing loss caused by too much Viagra. S. Eric was fined for being on time. Greg W. was fined for not winning the newsletter drawing. Bill Long was required to contribute from last week’s 50/50 pot.

The Hutchinson Community College basketball team is a pre-season favorite to win the conference and is ranked 14th nationally. Coach Swanson has 13 guys who can really play. The team has been scrimmaging against other teams to prepare for the season. Coffeyville has been added to the schedule to assist with that preparation. Only two players return from last year’s team. The Quarterback Classic is scheduled to begin November 1. Enjoy some Blue Dragon basketball at the Sports Arena!

Brad “The TUITs Daddy” Thompson collected from the following for not asking: Terry Brigman, Chuck Peterson, Jeff Brewer and Ward Davis.
