PROGRAM: Randy Hendrickson introduced David Upp as our speaker. David, the son of former Hutchinson attorney Robert Upp, is an ordained United Methodist minister since 1976. David has been in Fiji for the past 3 years as an international missionary. He decided the need there was not as great since many are already Christians and that he needed a tougher assignment. His next appointment will be as a student at the Leonard Theological College in Jabalpur M.P., India. For his living quarters he chose a 2-story apartment on campus where he could sleep upstairs in winter and downstairs in summer where it can reach 113 degrees. India is about 6% Christian compared with about 2% for that area of the world. There is still persecution of Christians in India. Graduates of the school must also take Hindu and Islam classes as part of their curriculum so that the missionary student will have a better understanding of the people of India.

NEWSLETTER: Stan Macgirvin didnt read his newsletter so the pot increases to $10. Nationally AMBUCS clubs hold two major membership drives per year, Spring Round Up and Fall Branding Time where current club members receive a special pin for bringing in a new member during these periods.

Following the board meeting the Board decided to eliminate the clubs financial subsidy for club socials such as the holiday party, the installation banquet and other socials to help trim costs. This amount is currently budgeted at $1,000 to $1,500. Also the Board recommends to raise dues $2 per month from $35 to $37. The last increase in dues was in 2000. With our current membership of 74, this would raise almost $1,800 per year. This would eliminate any financial shortfall for the foreseeable future. This was a first reading of this recommendation and will be voted on by the membership in two weeks. If approved it would become effective June 1st.

It was recommended by the Community Service committee and approved by the Board to give $1,600 to T.E.C.H. for their computer lab. They award over $125,000 in scholarships and financial support to individuals who need assistance with membership and fees. MEETING: Bob Bush provided information from last weeks Regional Board Meeting that he attended. Several of the dates listed above are fundraisers the other clubs are having. Bob also passed out a copy of the 2007-2008 Board Action Plan that was developed following the board retreat a few weeks ago. You should also have received a copy of this by e-mail. Please read it and provide feedback to Bob about those issues listed. Many of those items were discussed including the best way to handle the occasional monthly shortfall of cash for monthly operating expenses. Possible options discussed were a dues increase, a pre-approved amount for automatic transfer by the treasurer when a shortfall exists, a special fundraiser with those funds designated to monthly operating expense rather than charities, as possible options. Please provide feedback to Bob or any board member so a decision can be made soon.

PROGRAM Kirby and Christine Goering with PET International were our speakers. PET stands for Personal Energy Transportation. This organization manufactures, and with the help of hundreds of volunteers in 14 workshop around the U.S., builds a trike type of wheelchair through monetary donations. Their Kansas facility in Moundridge, which is sponsored by the Eden Mennonite Church so that non-profit funds can be raised, are in the process of acquiring their own non-profit status as they are an non-denominational organization. The trikes have wooden bodies so that repairs can easily be made by local craftsman and they have space to haul water, groceries or packages. They are hand-cranked, like our AmTrykes, but are larger and more robust to handle rough terrain and go where wheel chairs cannot. It is estimated that over 23 million people have lost the ability to walk from landmines or polio. The PETs are provided free of charge to individuals in third world countries that are in most need and where the PET would be most suited. The PETs have been sent to over 60 counties worldwide. The units are shipped in cardboard cartons cushioned with any materials that can be reused such as clothing, shoes and even tennis balls. They also need volunteers to assemble the units. It costs approximately $250 to build a unit and ship it to a U.S. load point. The units are then sent by container where needed. More information can be found at petinternational.org and donations can be made to Eden Mennonite Church c/o PET Project, 320 W. Ruth St., Moundridge, KS 67107. Each workshop is responsible for raising its own funds.

Don G paid for problems he kept having with his e-mails and their invisible attachments. Jeff B paid a liars tax from some prior week. Both Brad T and Randall H were late for this mornings Special Projects meeting. Then Ward proceeded to levy Ive missed you fines on those his records show have not been fined recently. Oh well. Its all about the kids!!

Announcements:

District Governor Reynolds announced that the District is seeking a candidate for his office for the 08/09 year. If you are interested, contact Doug Foss, our chapters latest Governor. The District meeting is scheduled for Feb 10th in Salina. Contact President Bob if you are interested in attending. Special Projects chairman, Dennis R, reported on their meeting this morning. Everything is beginning to fall into place as the NJCAA National BB Tournament is scheduled for March 17th through 22nd. Work schedules will circulate beginning in February.

Program:

Andrew Potter and Kelsey West presented their youth groups current outreach project. OneLife Student Ministries from the First Church of thee Nazarene have partnered with World Vision to raise awareness of the worlds hunger problem. Some of the statistics they shared were: 15,000 children under age 5 die every day as a result of malnutrition – thats 5.5 million annually. Around the world more than 850 million people are hungry, including over 300 million children.

They and their peers will conduct a 30 hour famine to help understand what it feels like to be hungry. They are seeking sponsors, with the goal of raising $29,000 to help families in Mzimba, Malawi. The significance of this goal is it represents the 29,000 children who die each day from disease, hunger, and poverty. Those who visit the church will be greeted with a paper chain with 29,000 links that stretches around the whole facility. 40 persons spent 12hrs each constructing and hanging the chain. If you would like to help, contact the church office at 662-1283 or Greg West (Kelseys father).

Winners

The 50/50 pot winner was Eric S, who donated the $35 to the “30 hour famine” fund The newsletter winner would have been Monte M. Since brother Luke was in attendance, he was declared the winner, and donated $15 to the cause.

HUTCHINSON AMBUCS

Fun with the Sergeant??

Preston C carried the toilet for Sgt Ward D this morning, and this week they came prepared (no cheap fines). Don G was displaying his new reversible belt. Margaret needs to check him out each morning to see that his belt isnt twisted, both socks match, etc. Sheriff Randy H apparently received an increase in his Reno County car allowance and was asked to share $1 of it with the Kids. Stan M should find his cell phone improving in the near future, as Cruppers will be the home of the latest cell phone tower in Reno County. Wonder if Chad and his friends will be there for the grand opening. Doug F was fine for something (maybe just because). Later, Jerry Regier of Temecula, CA and former Reno County resident felt so sorry for him that he paid Dougs fine for him. Nathan M was fined for double-dipping civic organizations. When you see him, ask which club has more fun, Ambucs or Rotary. Finally, Bob B and Jim S, as city employees, had to pay for the Citys sponsoring the latest Chamber breakfast.

Dennis Reiser returned with the TUIT and generated much moola. Fined were Doyle E (Bonnie didnt ask at church), Tom H, Ward D, Tony P, Guy G, Larry S, Cliff M, Bob (who cares) B, Randall H, and Jeff B. He than passed the beloved washer to PAM BROOKS.

While the Fall Branding contest did not generate as much excitement as did the one during Spring Roundup, it still resulted in several new members. Winners of Am-bucks were Fred C (10), Bob B (10), Al S (10), Ward D (5), Duke Wiggins (5), Randy Hendrickson (10). New members are Jim Shaw, Diane Saunders, and Peggy McConnaughy.

Reminders:

The Special Projects Committee will meet next Friday at 6:15 at the Town Club. If Chairman Dennis does his job, members can go to the calendar on the website, click on the meeting, and find the Agenda. How about that for cool!!

Jay P and Steve C still need a few more volunteers for next Saturdays (1/26) Casino Night fund raiser. The more, the merrier. The Soroptimist Club is a great bunch according to Doc Powers. Be at the Plaza Towers at 6:00. Dress should be white tops and black slacks.

The Executive Board Retreat will be from 11:00 to 2:00 at the Airport Steakhouse. This will be a planning session and all interested members are welcome to attend.

Program:

For those of us who grew up in the 50s and 60s when gas was $.19 per gallon and a new muscle car from the factory cost $3,600, life was driving up and down Main Street, honking at friends and hiding the beer cans from the cops. Jerry Regier grew up right here, and he and his wife Jan were guests this morning of Dean and Sherra Brigman. Jerry and Jan, along with the Brigmans, are promoting the first, hopefully annual, Downtown Hutchinson Rockin Rollin Road Run on October 3-4-5th, 2008. They plan to attract 800 pre-1973 Hot Rods and Custom Cars to Main Street between Ave B and 3rd Street, along with numerous car related vendors and an estimated 40,000 visitors. The couples first such promotion attracted 100,000 to a California town less than one-half the size of Hutchinson. Since then, they have started their own company Cutting Edge Marketing and have had numerous successful promotions prior to bringing one to Hutch. The activities will include the Kansas BBQ on Friday night, a Poker Run and Sock Hop (remember those) on Saturday. And Hot Rod Church and an Open Header run on Sunday. Just like golf tournaments, this endeavor will require hundreds of volunteers (and I hear it costs nothing to volunteer). Dean will be putting his team together this spring, so if you would like to participate, let Dean know.
