NEWSLETTER QUESTION: How many people appear in the Presidents picture on the Hutchinson AMBUCS website?

Newsletter 05/16/2008

Paul W. Brown-Editor.

In lieu of the report on fines and the TUIT, we are taking this opportunity to ask the membership for its assistance in producing the weekly newsletter. The newsletter format is as follows: GUESTS, FINES, TUIT REPORT, PROGRAM, CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS, 50/50 POT and NEWSLETTER QUESTION. The newsletter is usually limited to one 8-1/2 X 11 page using Microsoft Word. Literary genius is not required (although I, of course, have it!). The Word document is then posted to the website; and the website is definitely user friendly. We did not have a sufficient number of newsletter editors for 2007-2008 so the need for editors in the upcoming AMBUC year is even greater. Please consider volunteering to help as an editor; and contact Duke Wiggins to do so. (Until we have sufficient volunteers for the newsletter, the FINES and TUIT REPORT will continue to SLEEP WITH THE FISHES!)

TUIT: By the way, Bob Bush gave the TUIT to Guy Gann.

PROGRAM: The membership received a legislative update from fellow AMBUC and State Representative for the 101st District, Mark Treaster. While coal fired utility plants left a cloud over the 2008 legislative session, there were still 157 bills approved by the House and Senate. Some of the topics of the new laws included: expansion of health care, campaign reform, closing of corporate tax loopholes, Cessna bonding, funeral picketing ban and increasing voting sites. If you have questions regarding new legislation or other matters that should be addressed by the Kansas legislature, contact Mark at treaster@house.state.ks.us. We appreciate the public service that Mark Treaster provides in Topeka on behalf of Reno County residents.

Augustus Busch, Jr. bought the Clydesdales and wagon for his father as a gift to celebrate the end of Prohibition in 1933. The Clydesdales and wagon were used to deliver a case of beer to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and to the ex-governor of New York who was instrumental in ending Prohibition. Currently, Anheuser-Busch is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Clydesdales. The eight-horse hitch and wagon are in Hutchinson as a part of Main Street Hops and Cinco De Mayo. Three semi-tractor trailer rigs and a 7-man crew accompany the Clydesdales as they travel across the country. Clydesdales are draft horses that average 2000 lbs. and a height well above even Brad Thompsons coconut. The Budweiser Clydesdales teams are maintained at ten locations around the United States and average 320 days per year on the road.

Currently, the Wiley building has no central heating system, inadequate fire protection for all floors and few tenants. If you wish to participate in the discussion, attend the public meetings and notify your city council representative of your preference prior to the first Tuesday in July.

Dan reviewed the history of the market as it endured Black Monday on Oct. 19, 1987, the Asian currency crisis of 1997, the dot.com bubble burst and 9-11-01 attacks. Despite these setbacks, the U.S. economy has been growing 92% of the time since 1982. While individual segments of the market experience downturns, the stock market overall continues to grow for the long term. Therefore, Dan says: Dont fear the bear. Dont panic during market declines. Focus on what you can control. 1. Keep a long-term perspective when investing. 2. Invest in quality stocks. 3. Diversify your stock portfolio. This is not a quote, but seek professional advice from an investment representative.

PROGRAM: Tom Stanton introduced Sondra Borth, with Communities that Care. The Communities that Care program began with a grant five years ago in Hutchinson from the University of Washington. Hutchinson was one of only 12 cities in the test study. The CTC program brings concerned parents and community leaders together to help prevent the use of drugs through positive activities and information. The program focuses on being proactive to the risk factors rather than reactive to the problems. A change in prevention strategies is now used because the old scare tactics do not work with todays kids. Another change was to not educate the kids on drugs and their effects because the kids were learning new drug information that they didnt even know. Preliminary results are just now coming in from the 12 communities participating in the CTC program which shows less drug and alcohol use in those communities participating in the program. Sondra also told us about a new computer program available called Parenting Wisely that parents and their children can complete together on their home computer. There is still a continued need for adults who are willing to spend 1 hour reading to children in area schools. Sondra also handed out a flyer about A Dose of Prevention a free dinner/seminar that will be held Tuesday, April 8 at HCC Shears Technology Center for concerned parents and community leaders about medicine abuse by teens. Call Sondra at 665-4419 for more information or to RSVP for the seminar. You can also reach her at her office at Lincoln Elementary School.
