Sgts Corner:

Stan M assisted Ward this morning. He managed to place himself at the end of the food line, then fined

everyone who ate before him. Did he notify any of us that he was helping Ward this morning? Did

he wear a tag or a silly hat? No!! Then, if that wasnt cheap enough, the guys checked for invitation cards.

Sounds like a severe lack of material. Tom S, Kip H, and Mark T all paid their proud Jayhawk fine without

even being asked. Since the Tuit is with Dennis Reiser, who is in Salina with his ailing father, no report

today.

Announcements:

Dennis Reiser please keep Dennis and his family in your prayers. His father was taken to the hospital

in Salina for emergency surgery. On Friday morning he was still in very serious status. Later reports

are that he got through the surgery and is making a slow recovery.

Program:

Tom Stanton introduced Mary Messamore, the Director for Emergency Communications for Reno County.

Mary has worked in community communications for almost 30 years in such diverse places as Colby, Butler

County, Sherman County, and since 2005 Hutchinson/Reno County. Her department has established a back-up

emergency center for this region, including 19 counties. It is located at the old airbase south of Hutchinson, and

is the only site of its type in the country. Much of the funding for this project came from a Federal Homeland

Security grant of $300,000, and she describes it as state of the art. It was brought on-line just before the

Greensburg tornado and got a real baptism of fire. The center took calls from all over the country as friends and

family sought the status of Greensburg residents they were unable to contact. She even got to be on CNN for a

few minutes as they sought information about the disaster. The center is staffed locally by her department of 15

to 18 dispatchers at the beginning of an emergency. Other dispatchers from the 23 agencies that are part of the

region join locals as quickly as they can arrive.
