MEETING: Friday February 4, 2011 EDITOR: Tom Hymer

WELCOME GUESTS: Darren Wicks introduced his guest and todays program presenter Mary Hemmings. Dean Brigman introduced Vicki Tangeman, Ambucs District Governor who is visiting our club today.

FUN & FUND RAISING SERGEANTS: President Rick started the meeting a few minutes late which caused Sergeant Dennis to whine about missed late fines. Can you guess who got fined for that? Actually its OK if you dont know, you are probably blissfully happy. Doyle paid his 50/50 gambling tax. Tony, Dave, Stan, Mark and Doyle paid for leaving early from last weeks meeting. Remember the Score Cards from last week? Guy Gann predicted the closest score of the KU vs. KSU game and therefore he is exempt from fines for the month of February. Can you imagine, hes going to be late, let his cell phone ring, get in the breakfast line before the sergeants, no pin, no badge, leave early, and care less about Tuit. Paul Hartman, Dave, Mark, and Don were fined for not completing a score card. Others were fined for predicting K-State would win. After riding this horse to death the sergeant got the president for neglecting to mention Ambucs in the Hutchinson News story. Buy-a-Fine Anita Warren celebrates her birthday. Buy-a-fine Eric Steinle says his wife Kim is 50 and the AARP is circling like vultures, this cannot be a double entendre, can it? Sergeant Dirt Hot Line dennis@bgcons.com or call or text (620) 200-4859.

TUIT: Guy Gann had the Tuit last week and saw only one Ambuc during the whole week, Darren Wicks, who now has the Tuit.

ANNOUNCEMENT 1: President Rick Mitchell inducted Craig Johnson as the newest member to join Ambucs. Welcome Craig to the club. Craig is sponsored by Randall Haltom.

ANNOUNCEMENT 2: Jeff Brewer talked about the Super Bowl Party Sunday February 6th at 4:30pm in The Eagle Room of City Beverage. This is located at 2 South Kirby, a new building for City Beverage. If your snack requires serving utensils you should bring some. If you are bringing a snack in a crock pot bring an extension cord.

ANNOUNCEMENT 3: Jeff Brewer announced the passing away of the mother of Bob Bush. Her funeral will be next week. Please remember the Bush family in your prayers and thoughts.

PROGRAM: Program Manager Darren Wicks introduced Mary Hemmings, executive director of the Fox Theatre. Mary has announced her retirement from the Fox effective July 1st, saying that this is the time for her to leave. After serving for nine years she leaves a legacy of success for the Fox. Booking quality performances to the Fox has been a priority for Mary. One her strategies is to seek tour groups who tend to go from the east coast to the west coast to stop for a performance in Hutchinson. Oklahoma is an example on this strategy in action. Currently the Fox faces cuts in funding from the Art Commission of Kansas as Governor Brownback strives to balance the state budget. On the subject of money, grant applications are time consuming and unreliable. Mary has better success with local donors and supporters. In fact when she assumed her role as executive director she found the Fox in serious debt. With patience and determination the Fox has been debt free for several years and enjoys an endowment fund that spins off interest earnings for revenue. She focuses on bringing performances to the Fox that fit the Fox venue. The Fox is a theatre, not an arena for a rock band. She spoke of marketing strategies that the Fox employs, one of which is an electronic billboard in Wichita that brings in calls and ticket sales. She talked about a performance by David Copperfield. When it was time for interviews he did not answer the knocking on the door of his dressing room. Deciding that something had to be done she opened the door with a master key. Every Ambuc who attended todays meeting will remember what she saw upon entering and what she said to Copperfield, . . . youd better zip that up before your brains fall out! You had to be there to appreciate it, its one of those things. A great program. Mary has made a mighty and lasting contribution to Hutchinson. Everyone knows that she will be missed.

50/50 DRAWING: Jeff Brewer won $21 today. Does anyone else think that Jeff is the now most frequent winner, like Doc Powers?

NEWSLETTER DRAWING: Ron Williams name was drawn, however he was not present. So Ryan Thompsons name was drawn, however he didnt read the Newsletter so he was out of luck. Too bad Ryan, you could have won $15, next week the pot will be $20.

MEETING: Friday January 28, 2011 EDITOR: Tom Hymer

WELCOME GUESTS: Darren Wicks introduced his guest and todays program presenter Shara Gonzales. Randall Haltom introduced Craig Johnson who has decided to join Ambucs. Welcome to the club, Craig.

FUN & FUND RAISING SERGEANTS: Late arrival members Preston Clark, Bob Bush, and Eric Steinle paid their fines for failing to watch the clock. Birthday boys Bob Bush and Jay Pitzer were happy to pay a dollar just for living another year. Brad Thompson paid the gambler tax for winning the 50/50 pot last week. Then Dennis takes the toilet from the other sergeant Larry who pays a dollar for a ringing cell phone at an inappropriate moment. Then in flurry of fines they collected money from Randy Henderson for some unintelligible words and/or actions, President Rick for leaving early last week, Doyle Ehling for hugging a stuffed animal during church, Dean Brigman for running for public office, Scott Saylor for the article in the Hutchinson News about his business, Steve Conard for failure to provide a proper name badge for Anita Warren, Doug Foss for losing his badge, and Dennis himself for failure to put away the banners last week. And if you have the closest scores of the KU vs KSU game tomorrow you will win a Fine Free February Pass. Probably the winner will be someone who never gets fined. Buy-a-fine people were Dave Suhler for announcing a new granddaughter, Vern Powers for 64 years of marriage, and Doug Foss announcing a grand child coming soon. Then it was Kansas Day quiz, e.g. Kansas was the 34th state to be inducted into statehood, the western meadowlark is the state bird, the State slogan, etc. Not much money was raised because Ambuc members are unusually smart. The sergeants now count all the money in the toilet and decide that they have hit their quota, they flush it and ring the bell safe at last. Sergeant Dirt Hot Line dennis@bgcons.com or call or text (620) 200-4859.

TUIT: Brad Thompson decreed that people who do business with him are exempt from Tuit fines. Well, isnt that just fine and dandy. Therefore did these members pay or not pay, Pat Fallon, John Knipp, Mark Clark, and Guy Gann? The editor doesnt know due to temporary ADD. Snapping out of it and getting it right the editor recorded that Sergeant Dennis presented to Brad a special Round Tuit plate with honor and recognition for being The Father of the Tuit. One wonders who was the mother?

ANNOUNCEMENT 1: President Rick Mitchell talked about an Ambucs display booth at the Chamber Annual Dinner meeting and the need to have a few members staff the booth.

MEETING: Friday January 21, 2011 EDITOR: Tom Hymer

WELCOME GUESTS: Darren Wicks introduced his guest and todays program presenter Sam Butterfield.

FUN & FUND RAISING SERGEANTS: Missing the bell that starts the meeting were Jim Kicklighter and Jeff Roberson and were duly fined for their tardiness. New taxman and no mercy Dennis fined Jeff Brewer for winning the 50/50 pot last week. Steve Harmon paid for early departure. Curtis Mitchell, part time basketball referee who dared to foul-out the sergeants daughter, now knows Dennis will use any tactic to raise money for the kids. Terry Brigman, Jim Jacobs, and Randy Hendrickson now understand perfectly that it costs to have a birthday. Only Terry Brigman wore a red shirt in honor of the HCC Dragons and todays program Sam Butterfield, the rest of us blokes had to pay a dollar. DIRT HOTLINE is available to rat on fellow Ambucs dennis@bgcons.com or call or text (620) 200-4859.

TUIT: Mark Treaster wondered if the Tuit would see any action last week, but soon discovered a plethora of Ambucs who didnt seem to care about the welfare of a washer. Doc Powers at church, a bunch of people at the Chamber breakfast including Tom Hymer, Pat Fallon, Jay Pitzer, Rick Mitchell. At the HCC game Larry Sloan acknowledged the Tuit, however Dan Power, Doyle Ehling, and Guy Gann did not. Brad Thompson, who will be known throughout eternity for being the father of Tuit, now has it, fair warning.

ANNOUNCEMENT 3: Curtis Mitchell announced that the NJCAA Basketball Tournament is coming up in March and a sign-up sheet will be ready soon for members to sign up for their work shifts.

PROGRAM: Program Manager Darren Wicks introduced Sam Butterfield, Hutchinson Community College basketball coach during the 1960s and served as Athletic Director for another 20 more years. Sam brought an interesting program with stories of his experiences and the changes that have develop in college athletics. The following lines are some of what he had to say. There were games when there were no seats available in the arena. At most games spectators packed the Sports Arena. The players were local athletes from around Kansas which their families and friends could easily attend. Nowadays with many players from out of state the result is fewer people attending the games. When traveling the teams would have sit down meals. Now the custom is to buy take out meals in boxes or bags and eat on the bus while on the way to the destination.

Butterfield was honored in November 2010 night before the final game of the 2010 Quarterback Classic as the Sports Arena floor was named in his honor and will now be known as Sam Butterfield Court. The words Sam Butterfield Court were placed on the southwest and northeast corners of the Arena court. Nearly all of Butterfields family and more than 20 players whom he coached returned for the ceremony on Saturday at the Sports Arena. MEETING: Friday January 14, 2011 EDITOR Tom Hymer

WELCOME GUESTS: Randy Henderson introduced his guests and program presenters Deputy Mitch Harris and his spouse Renee, and Captain Wayne Baughman.

FUN & FUND RAISING SERGEANTS: Consider the violators, Jeff Roberson, Tim Davies, Steve Harman, and Don Grossardt who sneak out of the meeting after eating breakfast. They probably thought they were victims, but they paid anyway. Rarely fined people Tony Powers and Reta Campbell were assessed for their cell phones ringing during last weeks meeting and they were talking to each other??? Say isnt so! Sergeant Dennis is like the government because he invents new taxes, e.g. fining Doug Foss for winning the 50/50 pot. Late for the board meeting were Dave Suhler and Scott Potucek, plus Darrin Wicks who did not even show up, more money in the pot so expertly handled by Larry the other Sergeant. The sergeants correctly observed that a few members were not wearing their name badges thereby breaking the Ambucs law. Fined were Tim Davies, his badge was on floor, unbelievable, Guy Gan, and Jeff Roberson managed to wiggle out his fine. This day in history of January 14th, took us back to 1973 and 1954. If you didnt know the answers the whole table paid. DIRT HOTLINE is available to rat on fellow Ambucs dennis@bgcons.com or call or text (620) 200-4859.

When he attempted a U-turn his patrol car was struck on the driver’s side of the vehicle. He was severely injured and taken to Via Christi Hospital in Wichita in critical condition. In the hospital he remained in ICU for several weeks. As he began to recover he was introduced to an Amtryke to provide therapy to regain his strength and conditioning. He said he was on the Amtryke every day and came to realize that he was riding home by restoring the strength in his arms and legs. His testimony is witness to the benefit of Amtrykes, how they change and improve lives. Furthermore he praised the Amtryke program and the worthy cause that is carried by the Ambucs. SERGEANTS AT WORK: Larry and Dennis dinged the late people for the Community Service meeting – John Knipp and John Dreasher. Also really late Brenda Janda paid really more for her negligence. SPECIAL announcement by Sarge Dennis, a special DIRT HOTLINE is available to rat on fellow Ambucs dennis@bgcons.com or call or text (620) 200-4859. Totally anonymous, the sergeants need the material. Then there was a history exam to raise money. Some people knew the answers and some paid for recall deficiency.

TUIT: Ryan Thompson, after caring for the Tuit for three weeks and removing Paul Browns wrapping job, reported that Ward Davis, Dean Brigman, Dane Power, Steve Conard, Tom Hymer, and Tim Davies were uncaring and neglectful of the Tuit. Ryan then cooked up some reason to fine everybody for his pain and suffering and every member had to pay. Tim Davies now has the Tuit, because he talked too much.

Womens Volleyball, Coach Sarah Myers is rebuilding team after the former coach left taking three players.

Womens Basketball, Coach John Ontjes has a very competitive team.

Mens Basketball, the team faces a game in Dodge City in a very difficult venue there on January 8th. A change in recruiting rules allows attracting six out-of-state players instead of five. This allows teams, for example Colby, to build more competitive teams.

Mens Football, Coach Rion Rhoades has success recruiting out of Georgia. Also they get referrals from K-State after they fill their roster.

Stange talked about funding for the athletic programs, a challenge of late with less contributions. In order to offset this deficit HCC now manages the concession stands using the revenue to balance the funding for the athletic department and to provide money for athletic scholarships.

Stange closed his program by taking questions on wrestling, soccer, and golf. He gave mention to Shaun Hill who played at HCC and is now quarterback for the Detroit Lions. He also advertised a fund raiser event, a Chile Feed in Barton County on February 5th.

In the end it appeared that the sergeants were short on material and/or unprepared.

A client who engages in the program agrees to starting a savings account toward the purchase of a home, or repairs to an existing home, or work skills training, or secondary education. Savings are matched 2:1 in order to achieve the clients goal. This money is not assistance or a handout. Hurst spoke to the fact that there is a generation of people dependent on handouts and social assistance for a living. Once the pattern is set it is difficult for people to break out of it. It takes training on working, making and keeping a budget, using bank accounts, paying bills, saving money. IDA guides and directs them along the way, sometimes taking months, years. An individual can help IDA by making a donation of $1000 to the program and receive a $450 credit on their Kansas tax return. For more information go to http://www.ihs-housing.org

Some of the fines, but probably not all were, Curtis Mitchell for discriminating against Bushs son (photo evidence was provided), Darrin was fined for pointing out errors made by the Sergeants and then virtually everyone was fined an advertising tax for wearing company logo shirts. PROGRAM: Jennifer Dunn, Volunteer with Reins of Hope

Jennifer opened her presentation with a heartfelt thanks to AMBUCS for their support in the past. She explained how the kids feel on top of the world, when they are on the horses and always have a big smile on their face. This is a time when no one ridicules them. They have fun and are educated in many areas while they are at the riding session. Each rider is asked, How will what you learned today help you tomorrow? Jennifer read a childs testimony to give all of us a sense of what this program means to the kids. She explained some of the operational facts about the Reins of Hope and answered several questions. The Mission: Reins of Hope Therapeutic Riding, Inc. is a not for profit organization that fosters safe, professional, ethical and therapeutic equine activities for people with disabilities. This will be accomplished through individualized programs in an environment designed to assure the individual reaches his/her potential.
