Duke Wiggins was fined for being late to work his shift at the booth; he also was fined for not ordering enough ice cream. Those who did not work 4 shifts were fined a dollar. Program: Tim Davies introduced Becky Hughes, Director of Open Door Pregnancy Center. They started the center in a small office in 2002 at 21 West 2nd Ave. After several years there they moved to the northeast corner of 4th & Washington at 24 W. 4th Ave. in the former Cox Communications building. After several years there they have just recently moved in July to a building at 315 W. 1st Ave. The new building was purchased by an anonymous donor and given to the center debt free. The building is more home like and will offer more privacy to those they serve. It is a true, heartfelt ministry, for babies. They offer free pregnancy tests, counseling services throughout the pregnancy, pre-natal information, baby supplies, limited ultrasounds, community referrals, adoption referrals and post abortive counseling. They have served 127 women so far this year. There are 1.3 million couples wanting to adopt a child. The center is not a United Way agency nor is it government supported. Their annual Fall Fundraiser Banquet will be October 14th at the Grand Prairie Hotel & Convention Center. Kirk Walden will be their guest speaker. In 1921 it became Carey Park named for whom?

Tom Hymer was fined for a telephone technology issue and his former association to same. Duke Wiggins fined for not attending the Board Meeting and his response There was a Board Meeting? Jim Seitnater was fined for not being two places at the same time. He was working Third Thursday downtown when someone asked for him at the booth. Tim Davies was fined for being late to the booth last week. (I think if they would have dug a bit deeper they could have come up with a myriad of fines here.) Since Eric was not here, Don Grossardt was fined for us not having or knowing about no breakfast at the fair last week, another guilt by association fine. The best fine of the morning was Dave Suhler fined for trying to keep a sign posted at the new Monkey Show at the fair that some drunk was trying to take down since it was blocking his view. And last but not least, Ward Davis was fined for being late for breakfastbut early for next weeks meeting.

TUIT: Paul Hartman had Fred Conner, Duke Wiggins and Tom Hymer fined for not asking about the TUIT mostly at church. Program: Randy Henderson was called away on an emergency but Guy Gann introduced Vic Braden, Deputy State Attorney General Criminal Division. Vic was here to tell us about his recent experiences in Afghanistan serving with the Kansas Air National Guard from August 2009 through April 2010. Vics assignment was the Dirty South or the Kandahar, and Zabul area. Stationed at Camp Hero, the Afghan army headquarters, outside Kandahar City. Vic was a senior advisor to three generals in the Afghanistan army. He was part of a coalition of American, Canadian, Dutch and British representatives to provide insight to the Afghans on the western views and to provide the coalition on the Afghan views. His PowerPoint photos showed this area as mostly desert with oceans of sand and occasional waves of mountains and very isolated fertile valleys along the rivers. In those fertile valleys are the very poor and not well educated tribal people of Afghanistan, who are isolated and insulated from the rest of the country, growing mostly poppies as a cash crop for the drug war-lords and some wheat for food. Afghanistan is of great political interest because of its geographical location between Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to the north, Iran to the west, Pakistan to the south and east and China to the far northeast. Throughout history this region has been invaded by various groups and since the late 1970s has experienced a continuous state of civil war. The U.S. has supplied secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet afghan regime and more recently led the invasion that overthrew the Taliban government in October 2001. In December 2001, the United Nations authorized the creation of an International Security Assistance Force, (ISAF) to help maintain security and assist the Karzai administration. The country is slowly being rebuilt with the support of the coalition and continued dealing with the Taliban insurgency.

50/50 Drawing: Ryan Thompson won $22.00. Unfortunately Ryan left early and we hope the funds were deposited somewhere safe.

Newsletter Drawing: Fred Conner didnt know the answer much less the question: In the hit TV series Glee, what is the name of McKinley High Schools singing team New Directions number one competitor team? What is Pucks first name? The answers: Vocal Adrenalin and Noah Puckerman. This weeks question worth $55 is: What well known building/business from 1901-1929 preceded the building that is located on the southwest corner of B & Main today where Apron Strings is located? (Hintthe answers to all my questions are as close as your local library. Go dig!)

It is funded by the Economic Development Initiative Fund and its board is comprised of leaders from the private business sector and government from across the state. Through support of strategic research and development at our Centers of Excellence, through intense hands-on business assistance at incubators across the state and through investment capitol in start-up companies KTEC serves as an invaluable partner to bring economic growth to Kansas. Their customers use these planters to precision plant and test seed varieties to track yield results. Soon, with GPS technology, they will be able to track individual seeds through plant harvest. 50/50 Drawing: Jerry Regier won $30.

Newsletter Drawing: Jerry Regier guessed Picnic and Carousel as the answer to this weeks question. Jerry was half correct. Name two movies that a part of the movie was filmed here in Hutchinson? Wait Till the Sun Shines Nellie (1952) and Picnic (1955) were the two I was looking for. According to IMDb other films to have a portion photographed in Hutchinson were Star 34 (1954 Short Film), Evening Magazine (1976), Fallout (2010 Short Film) and Snatched (2010). According to the Kansas Film Commission Ace Eli and Roger of the Skies (1973), was filmed in Hutchinson and Haven although other sources list Mount Hope and Halstead, although most of the cast and crew stayed here. Guy Gann mentioned the movie, The Gypsy Moths (1969), but according to IMDb this movie was photographed in Abilene, Benton (Airport), El Dorado, Wichita, Kansas USA (misc. backdrops) and Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer Studios. The purse increases to $40 with this weeks question: What was the location of our previous court house, what year was it torn down and why?
