PROGRAM Darren Wicks introduced Monty Montgomery, the new President of the Greater Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce. Monty moved here from Big Spring in West Texas having been an economic development consultant. Born in Crane, Texas he was a graduate of Texas Tech University with a business degree. After working in several economic development positions in Texas and then Grand Island, Nebraska he returned to Texas to work in the oil business and an electric utility. He has big shoes to fill following Dave Kerrs retirement after 5 years here as President. Monty was looking for a reason to return to the Midwest and feels he has found it in coming to Hutchinson. With the recent Oil and Gas development in Western Kansas getting three times the production that North Dakota is pumping. Monty feels this could boom Western Kansas which would put Hutchinson on the doorstep of economic development locally. He also wants to bring more sports tournaments to Hutchinson being an avid sports enthusiast himself. Monty also implemented the new corporate wellness program at the chamber and will use it to promote other companies adding it as a benefit for their employees. Other issues needing attention are the Hutchinson Mall and the Ramada Convention Center. Continued promotion of the H-Factor program to shop locally especially during tough economic times with high gas prices. Most importantly he feels the Chamber and its various divisions are to provide outstanding service to their stakeholders during his tenure.

GUESTS Curtis Overton with First National Bank a guest of Harley Macklin.

FINES Jerry Regier and Scott Potucek were our morning Sergeants at Arms. Harley Mackin was fined for not greeting his guest at the door. Hmmmwe usually allow them to make there way into the room.Curtis Mitchell fined for starting the meeting at 7:0?. Is this getting to be a habit? He felt the board should pay for being long-winded. Or is it the person running the board meeting? Darren Wicks was fined for a comment he made in the board meeting referring that Don Grossardt was old. Many of us are getting there! Dennis Bockenstedt was fined for a legal notice in the paper. You can ask him about that. Followed by yet another round of pin taxes.

PROGRAM There was no speaker this week because there was an open discussion about building a replacement building for our booth at the Kansas State Fairgrounds following a committee meeting last week. It is too late to get a building built this year and we are looking at possibly doing this for the 2013 fair. Ward Davis did a preliminary cost estimate of approximately $79 per square foot for a conventional stick built building. Due to our building size traditional stick built would be less expensive than a steel building. This price does not include the cost of a vent hood for the waffle cone machines or any fixtures such as new serving or storage cases. This was based on our current building size of 24x45or approximately 1,100 sq. ft or $86,000 plus. The fair has offered us approximately 10 of additional space to the South of our booth because the Taffy booth is moving and the Corn booth could be moved over. There was discussion of adding this area to our present building size and also using the space for possible picnic tables in the interim. We will need to investigate if the new underground electrical service will need to be moved that is either in or near this area. The fair currently charges us $1,100 annually for our space and adding this additional space would add about $450 to our annual costs. If we build on this space it would add approximately 450 sq. ft. to our building costs or a total of $121,000 plus. After much discussion the decision was to first investigate what grant monies would be available to us which would greatly reduce what we would need to borrow to complete the project. We will also investigate grants available through National AMBUCS as well as local and area grants that might be available. The fair would like a letter of intent, as to what our plans are, as soon as possible. Final plans would be submitted later. Several members of the committee will meet with the fair to get answers for some of our questions and report back with this additional information.

50/50 DRAWING Eric Steinle won $28.

Most notably the Siemens Nacelle facility but also many others including; Shield Industries, Damon Worldwide, Kroger Accounting Services, Kroger Human Relations and Kroger Convenience Store management. We were one of 84 cities that Siemens was looking at to build their plant. Shield Industries saved several jobs from going to Mexico by staying here. Damon Worldwide purchased their first property here for offices and personnel that manage smaller accounts private label management. Hutchinson was the largest community in Kansas not served by a four-lane highway in 1984. Our community probably benefited the most from the 1989, 1999 and 2010 State Highway Plans and is looking toward the 2016 plan for further development of the K96 and I-70 Northwest passageway. Hutchinson is loosing some residents to Wichita because a lack of urban style apartments. In a recent resident survey 42% named Kohls as a store they would like to see in Hutchinson which is now forthcoming. Dave also mentioned that the US Congress needs to look at changing the 2 year Production Tax Credit for Wind and Renewable Energy to a more favorable 10 year window. Hutchinson will continue to reap the benefits, for many years to come, from the many projects that Dave Kerr has been involved with.

PROGRAM John Knipp introduced his son Brian, who is a First Lieutenant in the Air National Guard, returning from a 2010-2011 tour of duty in Afghanistan. Brian was stationed on a base in Laghman Province, Northeast of Kabul, one province West of Pakistan. He has an Agronomist degree from K-State and was serving as a coordinating Agronomist with the 36ADT Agra-Business Development Team. They were in Afghanistan assisting local farmers with farming practices and crop development for their area. With a 2 inch average rainfall and 130 degree midday temperature the area is all deserts except where it is irrigated. Brian showed a PowerPoint of his experiences there. Farms are bounded by walls, instead of fences, into compounds. Eucalyptus trees are plentiful but toxic and they do not allow vegetation to grow beneath them. Most farming is either river bottom or terrace farming with wheat, corn soybeans and their local vegetables as the predominate crops. Farms average 2 acres along with a few cows and chickens. The team using greenhouses for research and development introduced the farmers to some new plants and plant varieties. Unfortunately, due to poverty, the farmers pretty much just stick to what they know and can afford. The farmers barter 10% of their crop yields to others who have tractors who thresh the crops. The team also taught classes for the farmers and area high school and college students. The officers food and provisions were contract air-lifted to the base as needed.

Therefore they went back to the old bag of tricks and fined President Curtis and Treasurer Don. Program manager Darren Wicks attracted the attention of the sergeants because he had no program to introduce. Darren paid his penance and then they invoked the guilty by association law to fine his table mates, Dan Power, Paul Brown and Steve Conard. Talking about a White Christmas Sergeant Thompson asked how many White Christmases have there been in Hutchinson and when did the National Weather Service begin to record the data. Going from table to table they collected mucho dinero due to bad guesses and other silly responses. They even busted gadget freak Dane Power for cheating to get the answers with his smart phone. PROGRAM: Actually Darren Wicks had a program for today, he himself presented The True Spirit of Christmas as requested by President Curtis. This is how he did it. He called on various members to share their most meaningful Christmas stories. Tom, Jeff B, Jeff R, Rita Joy, Doug, Dane, Dan, Fred, and Harley shared the Christmases that were most meaningful to them. Then Darren shared. He was born into a poor family single mother with other kids. He was adopted as a little boy for which he is very thankful. His thankfulness caused him to visit the Salvation Army to ask about a most needy family. This is a family of six children including twins. A few months ago the mother was experiencing a difficult delivery and went into ICU. Her recovery required the father to take time off from his job to care for the kids and he eventually lost his job. Darren proposed that the members of the club donate some money for this family to help them and say Merry Christmas.

THE FOLLOW-UP: After todays meeting Don Grossardt, Jay Pitzer, Darren, and his eight year old granddaughter delivered the box of money to the family. $720 was raised along with a ham and can goods from Rita Joy. The ladies that knit the caps would like to start knitting the caps for next year and need $400 to buy the yarn. Then the sergeants pontificated on new goals for collecting fines. Really, they have to think about that when the only goal is to fill the toilet with money. Well, getting some laughs also is admirable. Jim Seitnater was fined for messing up something, Curtis Mitchell for letting the Siemens presentation running 25 minutes overtime, Dan Power for clipping his toe nails during some program.
