GUESTS

Ron Chrystie with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) & 37th Annual Kansas Relief sale, guest speaker

Kevin Miller, with A.G. Edwards

TUIT REPORT

Randy Henderson busted Bob Bush, Eric Steinle, David Ross, Fred Connor, Dan Power, Doyle Ehling,

Sharla Meisenheimer, Preston Clark, Al Stecker, Maxine Rossiter, Duke Wiggins, Don Grosshardt, and

Rick Mitchell – having the NJCAA Tournament was good to the TUIT!! Randy saw Paul Brown at the grocery store,

whose wife snickered when Paul realized his lapse. After the tournament on Wednesday, John Knipp and

Keith Schroeder failed to ask and were allowed to contribute to the fund.

Eric Steinle got the TUIT for this week.

PROGRAM:

Lori Hopp introduced Ron Chrystie, with the Mennonite Relief Auction on April 8-9, 2005. Seventy area churches join to put on this event each year. The sights and sounds and the ethnic foods of the event are worth coming for. The auction is an activity of the Mennonite Central Committee, the relief arm of the Greater Mennonite Church. This will be the 37th Kansas auction. During the 10 hours of the event $427,000 was raised last year – over $40,000 per hour. The Relief sale has generated $10.5 Million since its inception. All the money goes to relief efforts, generally overseas. A trailer of Health Kits just left for the Tsaumi victims last week. Generally, MCC volunteers go with the food and basics to help the people get things going so they are helped to take care of themselves.

Last year the Auction brought 22,000 people to the fair – the second largest event after the State Fair. Most people live close, but people come from all over, such as Pennsylvania and the West Coast. Their Golf Tournament will be in Hesston on April 30. 1,200 volunteers work on the Relief Sale, which uses 9 building on the Fairgrounds. This is supported by many more then just Mennonite church members. They have found that if there is food, volunteers will come. It takes 25 Mennonites to change a light bulb – one to do the work and 24 to plan the Pot Luck dinner afterwards. The Kansas Relief Sale has produced the most donations over the other states that have held them for 6 of the last 10 years. There are Mennonite sales in 35 states.

Club Announcements

Tee Shirt Booth: Bob Bush thanked all the volunteers for work at the Tee Shirt booth at NJCAA Tournament. We had low damage this year. We will not get the amount we earned from the American Legion for several months. Great job to everyone to support our work for the community.

Board of Directors: Board of Directors will met on Friday, April 8 @ 6:15am.

AMTRYK: Vicki Fultz announced that an AMTRYK will be given away next week, April 8 – a good time to bring a guest to see what we do. She also asked for a volunteer to do a training seminar on setting up an AMTRYK Demo site at the April 22/23 conference in Oklahoma. No one was available that knew how to do this so we will have to decline.

FINES

Vicki Fultz fined for the opening, Scott Horton and Eric Steinle for being late, as was Doyle Ehling for being late to Committee meeting. Larry Sloan was fined as AMBUCS was NOT mentioned on his new L & B Storage & Equipment sign in South Hutchinson. Randy Henderson was fined for setting a bad example with his lewd behavior Saturday evening at the Tournament. Keith Schroeder paid for a membership renewal. Bob Bush objected to the fact the President Putin of Russia had recently signed a bill to allow beer to be consumned in public in Russia – he fined our Law Enforcement members for not allowing outside beer consumption in Kansas. Randy pointed out that he does not make the laws, but only enforces them – which did him no good at all. Al Strecker was fined for a Golden Bear golf club glove – does he think he is Jack Nicklaus? There may have been some question as to whether the ownership was traced properly here. Jim Kicklighter was accessed a fine for his Foo Man Chew beard. Jeff Brewer & Steve Harmon were fined for going skiing while the rest of us have to stay and work. Steve was then fined again for his derogatroy comments about Fred Connor’s car. GUESTS

Wayne Baker with NJCAA our guest speaker & Ron Mann a Board Member with NJCAA

Mike Snow, Manager for the new Chili’s Restaurant

TUIT REPORT

Doug Foss gave his report on the “imposter” Tuit. With his glasses on he could see that it was not the REAL TUIT.

Doug went back through prior holders of the Tuit that had not noticed they they were not carrying the real Tuit,

which included: John Knipp, Lori Hopp , Larry Sloan, Steve Harmon & Larry Sloan again. Each got the opportunity

to pay a fine for not noticing. Paul Brown testified that he had the Real Tuit and passed it on (someone

wondered if a lawyer could be trusted with this assertion). Brad Thompson also testified that he had carried

the “Original Tuit.” Folks that did not ask about the Tuit included: Randy Henderson, Jay Pitzer, Dan Power, Duke

Wiggins, Lori Hopp, Al Stecker, Steve Harmon, Brad Thompson, Duke (again), ladies at Steve Connard’s office.

Terry Brigman and Jay Pitzer did ask about the Tuit during the week. Doug passed the Tuit on to

Grand Pa Randy Henderson.

PROGRAM:

Randy Henderson introduced Wayne Baker, Executive Director of NJCAA. Wayne is from Hutchinson/Buhler. His father Jim Baker was a basketball coach at Buhler High & before that Sherman Middle School. Wayne told us that to talk about Tee Shirts during the tournament with each team’s coach is going to be very hard. They are all very focused on their players and the tournament and will not consider anything else. These players, that are so fast on the basketball court, can move very slowly off the court when the team is doing other things. Wayne’s job is very large. There are 500 colleges in the NJCAA, 48 different National Championship Tournaments each year for different sports and Divisions. There are 3 Divisions of schools in the NJCAA. There are 50,000 student athletes out of 6.3 million students. NJCAA tries to involve all students in the athletic programs, for example the new logo was the result of a contest at the Fashion Institute in New York City. New logo was chosen from 80 submissions and winning student won $2,000. Great for school and students and much less expensive then to use a professional graphics firm.

Sports Illustrated did a recent 3 page article on the legal problems at Barton County CC. The Mission of NJCAA Athletics is much larger with emphsis on the average athlete, not just the kids that jump to the NBA. Wayne mentioned Larry Johnston, the first $100 million player in NBA. Wayne knew him when he could not afford a Value Meal. The NJCAA is more interested in athletes that graduate from 2 year and 4 year colleges, which is now being tracked. He mentioned Amber Hynes, from Buhler, a 4.0 student that will be an Academic All-American this year. Stress is on Teamwork, Leadership and Image. Wayne is interested in what NJCAA can do for the communities they are in, not just what they can get from each community. The current National Division I contract with the City of Hutchinson and the American Legion has been extended to 2010. They are concerned about getting the next generation to start buying tickets to the tournament to continue its financial support. Hope the community will make the tournament a family week. They are looking to get live TV coverage for the tournament soon. Wayne closed with concern about todays athletes being spoiled and the discipline from a coach can be a live changing experience.

Club Announcements

NJCAA Tee Shirts: Bob Bush brought us up to date on Tee Shirts at the NJCAA Tournament. The crews have been very good, although the sales seem to be soft so far this year. Bob would like any feedback or suggestions for next year. Damage was down to a couple of small sacks – much better than prior years.

Community Service Committee: Community Service Committee will met on Friday, April 1 @ 6:15am.

Second Reading for 2 AMTRYKs: for 2 needed in Lakewood, CO. Cost which will be $572 each and two at a discount for toddler AMTRYKs for $149 to use in Demo sites at Wesley Hospital (Wichita) and Health Equip (Hutch). So move and approved by membership.

PROGRAM:

Debbie Adams introduced Rick Staab the Financial Director for Disability Services. He gave the history of the Hutchinson facility which was started by the Presbyterian Manors 20 years ago. Their other homes were all dedicated to elder care. The Hutchinson home was the only facility for the disabled and they wanted to focus on edler care. Disability Services of the Great Plains, Inc. was contacted and agreed to take over Hutchinson Heights facility on North Monroe in Feb. 2002. The organization was started in Oct. 1996 in McPherson. Being now 8 years old they serve 130 people with 261 staff members. They have a wonderful Assisted Technology Center with 26 workstations with adaptable equipment which Maxine Rossiter has developed and they are working to take state wide. Funding for the disabled is established by Pier levels from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most difficult situations and therefore paid at the highest level. Disablity Services serves the most difficult Pier level clients. Last year 80 clients and staff took a trip to Disney World and they have also gone to Branson, MO. Their administrative expenses are only 9% of expenditures and they have managed to double the people served while reducing admin. staff by one. They developed the housing project at 30th and Waldron and are expanding this housing – Maplewood Estates.

Jon Zehnder, the Director of Operations, was then introduced. He started 18 years ago in maintenance. He started working with Disability Services in 1996. They have developed Gentle Teaching, working to make everyone inter-dependent on each other. They want the staff to grow to care for the clients, rather then keeping an emotional distance. The focus is on having fun and a good time and enjoying life.

TUIT REPORT

PROGRAM:

Lori Hopp introduced Loren Frees with Hutchinson’s Trees for Tomorrow Fund, a project of the Hutchinson Tree Board. This is a non-profit organization so contributions are tax-deductible. The Hutch Tree Board has several public projects. The current project is the planting of trees at Hwy. 61 & 11th Ave. The next two projects planned are: a) from 4th to 11th Ave. on the Airport Road, b) from 4th to “G” Ave. on Hwy 61. Most of the trees in Hutchinson were planted in the 1920s and 30s. Many of these are not the best selection for our climate. The Fund is promoting the planting of trees that are better suited to Hutchinson’s climate. Trees for Tomorrow will pay home owners 50% of the cost, up to $50, for replanting new trees. These requests must be approved by Bob Hunter with City Parks. All of the recommended trees are planted at the Dillon Nature Center. Jim Smith and their staff will assist and reviewing these suggested trees to help decide what is best suited for your home.

The Hutch Tree Board: Recommends planting trees from the South Central KS tree list; encourages homeowner planting new trees; provides workshops; will give each 4th grade student in Hutch a tree to be planted this year (probably a maple); supports the Ave. A School tree planting program; promotes the Trees for Tomorrow Fund; has organized a Hutchinson tree inventory (currently about 1/3 completed). Loren had an extensive slide presentation showing the trees best suited for Hutchinson.
