AMBUCS Newsletter 9/2/2011

Editor: Jeff Roberson

Guests: Michael Webb, Julie Bockenstedt, Gerald Thompson

Sergeants: Its crunch time for filling slots at the Ice Cream Booth. This year we still had a few openings to fill. So, the Sergeants gave immunity to anyone who stepped to fill the slot. For those who didnt a fine was levied against them. The good news, all of the slots are filled. Jerry of Rod Run fame is looking for homes for boxes to help support our National Guard troops overseas. If you have a good spot at one of your businesses, please see Jerry. He has a nice list of items that one can donate.

Ice Cream Booth: As mentioned previously all of the slots are filled. If you have not picked up your Fair passes from Fred yet, they will be at the guest services booth across from the 20th and Poplar gate. Cant fill your shift? Its up to you to find someone to cover it for you. Fred didnt seem interested in providing this service.

Announcements: Curtis Mitchell is still looking to drum up people to attend the district meeting down in Oklahoma City on October 13 to the 16th. It looks like a good time; if you need more information see Curtis. Jay is also drumming up folks for the upcoming Casino night on September 24th. Rita said to bring a guest next week. Also, the Hutchinson News had a nice article in Sundays paper (August 28th) about the Amtrykes we donated last time.

Committee Meetings: The Board will be meeting at 6:15 AM on Friday, September 9th.

The Ice Cream Committee will also be meeting on September 9th at 6:15AM.

Program: Michael Webb from Families Togethergave a nice introduction of what his office does. From their website:

Families Together, Inc. is a statewide organization that assists parents and their sons and daughters with disabilities.

By supporting the growing number of Kansas families and individuals who care for and about children/youth with disabilities, we believe children and adults will become valued members of their families, schools and communities.

Whether you are beginning or well into the journey with your infant, toddler, youth or teen, our staff is just a phone call away. From early intervention services, disability related information to transition to adulthood, Families Together is here to help.

Staff are available in each center to help parents gain support and information concerning specific disabilities, special education, financial and/or medical resources, and understand their rights by phone, or in person.

The purpose of his visit was twofold. First to introduce his organization and second since we share a common purpose he suggested that we could partner together.

Drawings: 50/50 Pot for $34 was one by Mr. Paul Brown. The newsletter drawing was for $15 and Chuck Peterson didnt know the answer. The TECH Golf Tournament drawing was won by Bob Bush.

Newsletter Question: For $20, at what hotel is the district meeting being held at in Oklahoma City?

NOTICE: We WILL be meeting at the Town Club for breakfast at 7:00AM on FridaySeptember9th.

Editor: Jeff Roberson

Guests: Lynette Lacey, Duranda Simmons, Nancy Conard

Sergeants: Fines were handed out as usual. Ward Davis was late. Duke has won the pot two weeks in a row and hasnt paid his fine. So he got fined this morning. Jeff Roberson, your faithful editor, got fined for missing Hank Yoder last week as a guest. New members to the club got a harassment tax. Jerry decided to see how much we knew about the Fair and fair facts. Apparently there 155 tons of used bedding disposed of after the Fair. Who weighs this stuff? We all seemed to disagree that there are actually 850 toilets at the Fair. There are 80 food vendors, so the ratio of food vendors to toilets is 8:85. The largest watermelon is 184 pounds. The Old Mill began operations in 1915. The Fair covers 280 acres.

Announcements: Steve Harmon announced that he lost his job over at Star Lumber. So Steve wont be joining us for breakfast for a while. If you know of an opening, please let him know. He still is planning on working his shifts at the ice cream booth. Our fearless President, Curtis encouraged us to attend the AMBUCS Bricktown Great Plains Fall Conference in Oklahoma City from Thursday October 13th to Sunday the 15th. Our District is also in need of a Visibility Chairperson. Interested? Contact Curtis for more information. Jay is looking for more help for the Casino nights that are coming up. Cause for Paws is September 24th right after the Fair. Holy Cross is October 22 at Holy Cross. Please see Jay to sign up. Looking for a Blue Dragon discount card? Jay hopes so, see him to buy one. Jim Jacobs talked about the booth; its ready to go for another year. We (Jim?) is adding another flavor to the lineup, Birthday Party. If it goes well, Jim wants the credit, if not blame the committee. Fred says we are in trouble for the last weekend of the Fair for the booth. If you have not signed up for three shifts, we need the help to cover the last weekend.

Program: Lynette Lacey talked about the Circles of Hope Reno County initiative. Their goals are to create bridges of relationship between families in poverty and middle-class members of churches. Walk with families as they are equipped to help themselves completely out of poverty. Help connect community resources for a more comprehensive, holistic approach to ending poverty. Address barriers to self-sufficiency in the community. Affirm those who have left poverty in becoming role models and resources to others. If you are interested in helping out the program you can contact Lynette at lynette@klconnections.com or Rev. Jeff Prothro at jmprothro@sbcglobal.net.

Drawings: The 50/50 pot was won by Mr. Darrin Wicks. He donated the money to Circles of Hope. Randall Haltom drew the newsletter question, and to my disappointment he didnt know the question. So, its up to $15.

Newsletter Question: Sticking with the Fair question theme, what did the 2002 Sky Ride cost to build?

AMBUCS Newsletter August 19, 2011

Guests: Kimbly Reiser, Tonya Hendrickson, Zach Hendrickson, Christie Cox, Linda Cox, Dawson Cox, Alexyia Aden, Chris Aden

Fines: The Sergeants decided to keep it short and sweet this morning. Given that we were giving away two Amtrykes and also had a guest speaker. Jay got fined with a whining tax. Jim Kicklighter was late. Doug gave a dollar in honor the two kids receiving Amtrkyes. Rita suggested a $2 fine for two Amtrykes, but that didnt get much traction. Don Rodgers got fined for not helping to put up banners.

Amtrkyes: It is a banner day for our club when we get to give away an Amtrkye, little lone two. Today was a two Amtryke day. AlexyiaAdenwas shy, but started to feel more comfortable around the group. Dawson Cox also seemed very happy with his Amtrkye too.

Announcements: Cause for Paws is going to have a casino night coming up on September 25th. The Catholic Schools is also going to have us for a Casino Night coming up on October 22nd. Duke reminded us about the upcoming workday on Saturday the 20th. Randall also talked about the upcoming TECH golf tournament.

Program: Randy introduced his son, Zach. Zach talked about his time with Boys State. He was elected to go to Boys Nation as a Kansas Senator. During his time in Washington DC he had the opportunity to meet the President of the United States. He also enumerated several accomplishments while at Boys Nation. If Im allowed to editorialize, this author was very impressed with this young man who has a very bright future ahead of him.

Drawings: Duke won $25 in the 50/50 drawing. Kip Hildebrandt would have won $10 with the newsletter question, but sadly, he wasnt there.

Newsletter Question: In what year was the Americans with Disabilities Act first passed?

Newsletter 08/12/2011

Guests: Benedick, Savanah

Fines: Randy got fined for announcing the TECH golf tournament before the Sargent rang in. Steve forgot the newsletter chips last week, but had them with him today so he got a retroactive fine. Rita apparently sent out an email with a single “H” in it. I guess the Sargent didn’t appreciate the brevity of it. Guy bought a fine to announce his “80th” anniversary of marriage. Darrin arrived after the guest speaker this morning, but Dennis B helped out getting Savanah setup. Fines were also handed out because we should eat healthy breakfasts since we will be enjoying the fried food cornucopia at the Fair that is right around the corner. Those who felt like they were enjoying an unhealthy breakfast should kick in a buck. Thanks to Doug who kicked it off, most of us chipped in a buck. Then Scott rang out.

Announcements: Vicki Tangeman joined us this morning. She gave a nice update about the National Conference. She gave Rick the Club 100% award. She complimented us in being one of the top 15% Clubs in the nation. The district meeting is coming up in October on the 13th through the 15th in Oklahoma City. Vicki also talked about the Wish List Club where for $1 a day one can purchase an AmTryke. Individuals, companies or clubs can participate. Vicki also talked about the Veterans ride at the National conference. She was touched by what we are doing to help out the Vets. I found a link to the article here http://eastmemphis.wmctv.com/news/veterans-amtryke-ride-features-therapeudic-cycling-courtesy-ambucs/56101

Curtis, our fearless leader, talked about the 6:15AM board meeting. Kids Play is a company that helps design playgrounds for the handicapped. There may be an opportunity for our Club to help out the City of Hutchinson with the new 43rd Avenue park. It was also discussed about the possibility of offering a junior membership to help attract new members. The AMBCS golf tournament is also coming up in the September/October time frame, look for more information in the newsletter or at breakfast. August 20th at 8:00am is booth cleanup.

Program: Savanah Benedick from the Planning Department with the City of Hutchinson presented a nice program about Brush Up Hutch. The idea is to offer, on a needs basis, paint so people can paint their houses. Only a limited number of people have participated so far and funds are still available. There is more information on the City of Hutchinson web site.

Drawings: Randy won the spot for the TECH golf tournament. That seems a bit suspicious. The 50/50 pot was won by Duke for $30. Larry Slone won the newsletter drawing for $50.

Newsletter Question: When was AMBUCS founded?

Newsletter 08/05/2011

HUTCHINSON AMBUCS

Guests: NONE!! First time in weeks there have been no guests.

Sergeants Playground: Jerry R and Doug F patrolled as sergeants for the day. Doug began by producing a document printed from the internet indicating that Coors Lite had taken over the #2 position, dropping Budweiser to #3. Being unsure of who controlled this website, Mr. Bush indicated thats not true in his distribution area. However he did pay to get a copy of the document to be used as inspiration for his guys. Jeff Roberson failed to sneak in late and paid his fine. Colby Davis was also fined for being late – guess who paid the fine. All the stockbrokers were fined for not announcing the stock market debacle weeks ago. Larry Sloan paid for working his wife Barbara on Sunday moving a backhoe no less.

Announcements: According to my calculations, next Friday is the 2nd of the month, which means board members should plan to be present at 6:15. If Im wrong, blame President Curtis for not updating the calendar on the website.

Program: President-elect Darren Wicks paid dearly for not having a program for today. Actually, his program cancelled at the last minute, so he called on Jim Jacobs and the ice cream booth committee to give a status report. Both American Fun Foods (our supplier for napkins, dishes, toppings, etc.) and Sysco (our supplier of ice cream and cone mix) have been contacted and are prepared for our orders. Fred Conner announced that he has a number of slots available during the evenings and on both weekends. We are asking each member to work 4 shifts this year and encouraging the development of new leadership by signing up for an assistant managers slot. Jay Pitzer will be taking over while Fred is out of town, so expect to hear from Jay if you havent committed to 4 shifts. Brad Thompson discussed the condition of the booth itself. The roof is sagging, the siding is rotting, and the floor needs to be replaced. We have been looking at this problem for the last 10 years but havent proceeded to develop a plan to attack the problems. President Curtis will appoint a committee of members who possess the skills to put a plan in action. At this time, we will repair the building as needed for the next several years until the plan can be developed and funds raised. Several suggestions were made on how to fund this project and those will be assessed by the committee and the board.

Drawings: Stan Macgirvin won the 50/50 pot and donated the $21 to the new booth fund. There was no newsletter drawing, as Steve Conard forgot the name chips.

The newsletter question for Friday the 12th is worth $50 if your name is drawn and you can provide the answer to the question What are the 2 biggest fund-raising projects, annually raising between $18,000 and $22,000?

Future Meeting Speakers

8/12/11 Savanah Benedick. Hutchinsons City Planner, speaking on Brush up Hutch. 8/19/11 Zack Hendricksen, speaking on his experiences at Boys State and Boys Nation.

Stan caught Doug Foss at the pass trying to escape early, ka-ching. Tony Powers left his big hat under his bed, ka-ching. Ward Davis did not report his absence last week, ka-ching. Harley and Curtiss were fighting over a coffee cup, ka-ching. Duke was just being himself, ka-ching. Rita Joy ratted out everybody who did not bring a guest, ka-ching many times. Borrowing from Scott Potucek Sergeant Brad conducted a corny trivia contest. This only proved that not all the corn is grown in Nebraska. Fred Conner apparently cannot control of his garage door, ka-ching.

TUIT: Have you missed the Tuit? Does a feeling nostalgia haunt you? Has something been missing in your Ambuc life but you couldnt quite put your finger on it?

One of their current project is the Reno County Museum on the road. This vehicle goes to small communities in Reno county such as Sylvia and Pretty Prairie. The artifacts are from these communities making a custom made exhibit. Another project is the Bisonte Hotel exhibit which is now open. When they announced they were looking for Bisonte artifact they had amazing response from the community. The Museum faces a number of challenges of Air Conditioning repairs, deteriorating windows, improved lighting. You can support the Museum by becoming member for $40 or $100 which would include the Kansas Underground Salt Museum.http://www.renocomuseum.org/

50/50 DRAWING: Brad Thompson won the pot of $23 and donated to the Reno County Historical Museum.

NEWSLETTER DRAWING: Mark Clark could have won $45 but he was absent today. Next weeks question for $50 is: How many artifacts does the Museum have in its inventory?

Guests: Dennis Schamber, VP of Farmers National Bank, guest of Dan Power; Jon Potter Purchasing Agent for Kincaid Equipment Mfg, guest of Craig Johnson; Dorinda Simmons, Adult Life Skills Mgr for TECH, guest of Diane Janzen; Kristine McKoewn , who attended even though her sponsor Reta Joy Campbell couldnt.

Sergeants Playground: Scott Potucek stood in for Ward & Colby Davis, and immediately fined every member that went through the food line before him. The fact that nobody knew he was going to be sergeant didnt deter him from picking up a lot of cheap fines. He fined Eric S for being late and Tome Hymer for approving that fine. Verne Doc Powers paid a fine to announce that July 21st was his 87th birthday. Eric S led the singing.

Announcements: President Mitchell reported on this mornings board meeting. The budget for 2011/2012 was reviewed and approved. The Community Affairs committee recommended Amtrykes for two candidates and the board approved payment on both. One will be paid from the Al Strecker fund; the other will be part of the 2011/2012 budget. The board spent much of the meeting discussing the physical needs of the Ice Cream booth. President Mitchell announced the appointment of a special Fair Booth Committee to study the issues and make recommendations for actions needed and a time table for implementation.

New Member Recognition:

John Potter is being mentored by Craig Johnson. John is the Purchasing Manager for Kincaid Equipment Mfg in Haven, KS. He and his wife Jan reside at 527 East 1st in Hutchinson. Dennis Schamber is being mentored by Dan Power. Dennis is in charge of the new branch of Farmers National Bank in Hutchinson. He and his wife Cynthia currently live in Wichita, but are planning to move to Hutchinson in the near future.

Program: Dean Brigman introduced his life-long friend and AMBUC member Harley Macklin as todays speaker. Harley grew up on a farm near Hutchinson, later moving to Hutchinson. He attended Hutchinson schools and eventually graduated from Kansas State with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He currently runs HR Consulting and is contracted with Black & Veach, one of the worlds largest designers of Electrical Power plants. As a consultant for them, he has traveled all over the world training the purchasers of B & V equipment how to set up and maintain these highly technical systems. His favorite place to visit, outside of Kansas, is China, where he had the opportunity to tour some of the rural villages where life is still much like it was a century ago. Spend some time getting to know Harley. He has great stories to tell.

Drawings: 50/50 pot of $28 went to Dane Power; the newsletter question went unanswered again, as Ron Quick was not in attendance.

Next Fridays question will test your ability to listen to the speaker. Along with his family and friends, what is Harley Macklins great passion in life? The answer is worth $45, so put on your thinking caps.

The Big Hats are in charge this Friday, so you have earned one, wear it. Our speaker will be Linda Schmidt, who will give us an update on the Reno County Historical Museum.

Guests: Aaron Powers, guest of his Dad, Tony; Kristine McKoewn, guest of Reta Joy Campbell; Kristine is ready to join, if we can just get President Mitchell back to do his thing; Natalie Bright, guest of Jerry Regier, his daughter and our speaker for today.

Sergeants Playground: Ward and Colby were back with a new list of victims. Apparently Brad T snubbed one of the sgts during the week, so a search got underway for him. Not finding him present, they once again collected from Ryan T. Good luck to Ryan in trying to get his money back. Doc Powers won last weeks 50/50 pot, so paid his winners tax. Dwight Wiehl chose not to attend last weeks meeting and missed his chance to answer the newsletter question, costing him a dollar. Dane Power, 2nd VP, conducted the meeting, so Colby fined him for being disorganized. Fred Conner must have done something, because he got hit again. Jeff Roberts just returned from a cruise, and put his last remaining $1 in the pot. Larry Sloan was fined for a cell phone interruption last week. Eric S, Bob B, and Reta Joy were all on the list and paid graciously as usual.

Announcements: Jerry Regier gave us an update on the Veteran Amtryke Project he is spearheading for this falls Rod Run. He has broken the ice with the Wichita office of the VA, which had been a bottleneck in the past. They are on board now, and have identified Kansas disabled veterans. Jerry is now narrowing this list down to those who can be aided in their rehabilitation by an Amryke. All recipients will be approved through the normal therapist testing. He is also having success in approaching businesses to sponsor an Amtryke, with much interest coming out of Wichita. He now feels confident that he will be able to provide at least 6, maybe 10, to veterans this fall. Great job Jerry!!

Dont forget the Board of Directors meeting this Friday @ 6:15AM

Program: Jerry Regier introduced his daughter, Natalie Bright, of Bright & Carpenter Consulting of Topeka, KS. She and her partner are registered lobbyists with the Kansas Legislature and one of her largest clients in the Travel Industry Association of Kansas (TIAK). Her presentation looked at the effect that tourism has on our state and local economy. Tourism pumped $7.2 million into the Kansas economy in 2009 and is the third largest industry in the state (based on jobs). The South Central Kansas is second only to the Kansas City/Johnson County in attracting tourist dollars, and Reno County is second only to Wichita in attracting tourists to this region. The 2009 impact study of the Reno County showed $105 million flowing into our local economy. The story her firm is selling to the legislature is that tourism is a significant industry in the state and that it is worth investing in for the future. If you desire more information, google TIAK to locate their website.

Drawings: The 50/50 pot contained $29 and went to Fred Conner, who Im sure took it directly home to wife Barbara. For the second week in a row, Dwight Wiehls name was drawn for the newsletter pot and this time he had no idea what the question was, let alone the answer. Since he paid $1 for being gone last week, no telling what blowing it a second time may cost. Bring money!!.

Next Fridays question is Who is the director of the Greater Hutchinson Convention and Tourism Bureau? This is the local agency that coordinates tourism for Hutchinson and Reno County and works closely with Natalie Bright in her efforts. Its worth $40, so come prepared.

Guests: Peter Miller, our speaker for today, guest of Jim J; Jim Gruver of Gruver Construction and Cabinet Connections, guest of Jerry R; Dennis Schamber, VP of Farmers National Bank, guest of Dan P; Dean Brigman brought his wife Sherra; Jim Jacobs brought his wife Kristen; Kelan, Julie and Brooke Young, guests of the club.

Sergeant’s Playground: The club initiated its newest sergeant, Colby Davis, who assisted his Dad, Ward. Colbys trusty driver, Darren W, steered him around traffic. Jerry R paid an advertising tax for parking his decorated vehicle in front of Allies all week. Eric S paid $2, one for being late again, and one for his first new pickup. He said he was lucky to have any money left after paying his taxes and registration fees. Colby seems to be very adept at catching President Mitchell sleeping during the meeting. The president mumbled something about just resting his eyes, but nobody bought that excuse. Lastly, Ward fined all persons who were not wearing red, white, and blue on the first day of the 3-day July 4th weekend.

Announcements: Bob Bush announced that Budweiser is sponsoring the Hutch Monarchs game on Saturday evening, donating a bunch of tickets for Ambucs to use to get in free. Pick several up as you leave. Preston reported that the Community Service approved two more Amtrykes to be presented in the near future.

AMTRYKE Presentation: Doug F and Ryan T presented Brooke Young with her new Amtryke. She was so excited and managed to steer through the tables to show us how she could handle herself. Her Amtryke even has her name on it. Her mother, Julie, was very generous with her praises for what our club does and how much difference it makes in Brookes life. Good riding Brooke.AMTRYKE Presentation: Doug F and Ryan T presented Brooke Young with her new Amtryke. Program: Peter Miller is the Manager of the Hutchinson Municipal Airport. He grew up in Salina and admitted that he and his father were hanger rats. Their favorite pastime was exploring the hangers at the Salina Airport. He has been at his job for almost 10 years and claims he couldnt ask for a better career to fit his interest. He spoke briefly about the history of the Hutchinson facility. The land was donated to the city by the Carey family, the runways were built by the Navy, and the current building was built by the city in 1962. The facilitys operations are funded by the leases on the restaurant and Wells Aircraft and through the citys annual budget as part of the Parks and Facilities division. Major project funding comes from the FAA, the current one involving relocating 4th street to meet FAA safety requirements. The economic impact on Hutchinson and Reno County amounts to 169 jobs with an annual payroll of $5.3 million for a total output of $15.2 million. Thanks to Peter for an informative and interesting program.

Drawings: The 50/50 pot of $35 went to Jerry Dalton, who donated it to the Young family. The Newsletter question went unanswered since Randy H. left early. Sorry Randy!!!

I will give you a shot at the same question 2 weeks in a row. For $30 is When and where is this years AMBUC National Convention? If you dont know, go to www.ambucs.org and look around.
