PROGRAM: Kathy Hanks introduced Craig Smith, Instructor of Fire Science at Hutchinson Community College. Fire Science classes are held at the South Campus, the former Hutchinson Air Base Industrial Tract. Due to the time of year Craig concentrated the program focus on Ice Rescue Training. The class is broken down into awareness, operations and technician level. It is offered 1 to 2 times per year. Locally we do have the potential for this type of accident. Such as kids playing on a farm pond, ATV use on same or ice fishing. The victim will succumb to hypothermia very quickly. They cannot usually extricate themselves and without assistance will not usually survive. Outdoor training is done on a farm pond. If the pond is not frozen, floating platforms are used to simulate surface ice complete with a hole for the victim. The rescuer wears a special waterproof flotation suit with thermal protection. Throw bags, a rescue sling and board and a tow vehicle are all used to pull the victim and rescuer to safety. Classes must meet National Fire Protection Association guidelines. Currently 37 different classes are offered as a part of the Fire Science program. The Fire Science Associates in Applied Science degree requires 64 credit hours of classes. For more information on the Fire Science program contact Craig Smith or Department Chair Bobby White at HCC.

The sergeants were able to extract contributions from numerous Ambucs who seemed happy to donate beginning with Reiser singing good morning Sergeant Brad. Then there were some tardy Board Members, Mark, Kathy, Tom and Dorinda. Troy paid for showing up. Guy loves to pay for not wearing his badge. Pitzer paid to be the certified trainer on pins and badges. Colby bought a fine, but the editor forgot what for. Then the sergeants rang out.
