The meeting of December 18, 2015

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The sergeants collected some fine money, but the details went unnoticed. The money bucket was passed around for a Christmas gift for Becky in appreciation for her service of hosting our Friday morning breakfasts. Several hundred dollars was collected.

Todays program was presented by Dr. Ed Berger and his associate Tracy Thomas. Beginning with the concepts of science education and space exploration he noted that education in these categories needs additional emphasis. The root of the problem is the lack of math education. In the USA math education excellence ranks 31st among the developed nations of the world, which puts the USA in a compromising situation. KU and KSU are ramping up science and math disciplines so their students can compete primarily with China and other developed nations. Berger also addressed that high-skilled workers are lacking, especially welders. He noted that information technology has created jobs that did not exist just a few years ago, and others will emerge.

The Children’s Shelter started in 2000. In 2008 the treasurer passed away with cancer so Karen stepped in until a CPA came on board and now she is the director. They are a safe house and must maintain anonymity. Children that have been pulled from home cannot go out or to the park or into the community for fear of family reprisals. The shelter usually has them for 72 hours before the case goes to the judge. Sometimes they like the shelter better than home. CINC (child in need of care), many children are born addicted to something. Karen told a story of holding a baby nestled into her neck that was extremely touching of how it calmed the addicted child. They are licensed by the KDHE and inspected yearly. They receive a grant of $115 a day. The shelter can have up to 7 children. Usually they have 4-6 children. They have been at capacity 3 times since she has been there. The ages accepted are birth to 13. Newsletter 10/16/2015

Every week members support the club in ways that are not noticed. For example, does any one wonder who sets up the flag, hang the banners, bring out the toilet, place the gavel and bell, set the badges out, prepare the Lucky Ace pot, and the attendance sheet ? Well, you can thank Jeff Brewer, Stan, Doug, Dennis, Jay and others for their reliability.

Kathy Hanks introduced her guest and program David Buckley.

Also Jay Pitzer introduced guest Dave Dubovich Pastor of Park Place Christian Church.

Brewer and Cooley patrolled the place for the purpose of a fund raiser. Contributors were Dan for getting in line before anyone else, Colby was late, Dave was fined for being his quite self, Guy Gann had no pin, Randall, John Knipp, Terry Brigman, Dwight, and Colby? So it isn’t so.

Doug presented some updates on Amtrykes, needs and support.

David Buckley presented an interesting program on community gardens. His organization is named “Community Agricultural Site, or CAS for short. After seven years the garden has grown much larger. Many of the gardeners use their math skills in managing the Garden efficiently along with K-State research. The site is irrigated and maintains a composting system. There is a connection with the local schools and students learn about gardening. The garden has a slogan, “Making Earth Science and Math Fun.” You are welcome to visit the garden at 6 West 56th, near the intersection of Plum and Monroe. 620-200-7484 agsitecas@Me.com, or Google “community Agricultural Site.”

Some Royals fan slunk in late so he incurred insult to injury in the way of a fine. Kathy held up breakfast so it cost her a dollar. THEN she blamed her guest! Dan kind of got “thrown under the bus”. Oh, and she forgot her purse. Jeff Brewer, by the way, looks great with a purse. Or is it murse? John helped Kathy pay her fine for “forgetting her purse”. Colby bought a fine to let us know about the Reins of Hope auction on October 24. If you want a table you had better get it quick. They are going fast! It is from 11:30am to 2pm on Halloween.
