Karen Washburn with the Children’s Emergency Shelter (speaker)
Sergeants CornerJeff was our illustrious Sergeant, there was of course a presidential fine, Guy has so much money that he does not need his name tag? Ward was late (would someone like to volunteer to call Ward and Colby on Friday mornings?), Terry bought a fine to remind us about the Follies, Brad felt sorry for Jeff (why?), Harley bought a fine to let us know that Dr. Berger is running for the Kansas Senate and they need signatures for a petition to put him on the ballot, Dwight mentioned that Paul is responsible for props at the Follies and that they are being built in Dwight’s shed, Jeff then checked for proper badges and pins, it was mass chaos!OtherBoard Meeting next week at 6:15 amProgramKaren WashburnShe moved last week and her life is in boxes. The Children’s Shelter started in 2000. In 2008 the treasurer passed away with cancer so Karen stepped in until a CPA came on board and now she is the director. They are a safe house and must maintain anonymity. Children that have been pulled from home cannot go out or to the park or into the community for fear of family reprisals. The shelter usually has them for 72 hours before the case goes to the judge. Sometimes they like the shelter better than home. CINC (child in need of care), many children are born addicted to something. Karen told a story of holding a baby nestled into her neck that was extremely touching of how it calmed the addicted child. They are licensed by the KDHE and inspected yearly. They receive a grant of $115 a day. The shelter can have up to 7 children. Usually they have 4-6 children. They have been at capacity 3 times since she has been there. The ages accepted are birth to 13.
