Thad Bartley paid to read a thank you note from daughter Meagan for the additional scholarship funds approved by the membership last week.

PROGRAM: Ryan VanZant, the new director of the Hutchinson Zoo, came to use from Bartlesville, OK. He proudly displayed the new zoo logo on his jacket, a combination of the old zoo logo and the city of Hutchinson logo. Although he has only been here for six months, he and thecity commission have worked hard to promoteour zoo as one of Hutchinson’s prime attractions. They are now working together with Stractica and the Cosmosphere to promote joint programs. The zoo is currently expanding and is offering free admission until the expansion is complete. The long awaited otter display will began construction in October 2016. Mr. VanZant has spent the last decade working to preserve the bald eagle (Americas symbol of freedom) from extinction. He bought his on personal bald eagle to Hutchinson, and we got to meet him. His name is Bensar, and he is a beautiful, yet frighteningbird, Tethered to Mr. VanZant arm, headvised us that the hooked beak is not for bitting but for tearing apart the catch. It’s the talons that catch the prey and if they grip you with their talons, it will go right down to the bone.We thank Mr. VanZant for afascinating program, and I thank Kathy H for noticing the last bite of egg on my plate a few yards from Bensar and covering it with a napkin.

GUESTS: NONE!!!

SERGEANTS CORNER: Sgt Knipp and deputy Tom Hymer collected 2 weeks presidential fine from Dorinda, since she missed last week’s meeting. Immediately, VP Thad Bartley, who ran the meeting in Dorinda’s absence, requested the the fine he paid in her behalf be refunded. The Sergeants both laughed and said that was last week’s business, no refund due. Doyle Ehling paid to announce his 65th birthday. We all sang for him, which he appreciated greatly. Guy Gann paid to announce his 45th anniversary to the remarkably patient Bobbie. We did not sing for them, which Guy greatly appreciated. Sgt Knipp’s topic for this day was the2016 Olympics in Rio. Anyone whoresponded that they had watched at least some of the games were exempted from the next fine; those who had not watched any of the games paid a buck. The sergeants then went from table to table trying tofind the correct answers for their questions about the Olympics. They received a few correct answers, but collected lots of dollars.

Presidents report from the August Board Meeting: Two of our national Ambuc scholarship winners missed their opportunityto receive their $1,000 scholarships this year because of timing problems that were not their fault. Based on our current solid cash balance at this time, the board approved $1,000 scholarships for each one. Thad Bartley’s daughter, who had already been granted a $500 for thisyear was given an additional $500 to bring her up to the same level as the others. The membership was asked toratify this action as a one-time action not setting a precedent for the future. Membership approved the action of the board.

There will be a meeting of the BigHat members at 6:30 Friday August 19th to discuss the future of the club.

GUESTS: Jeanny Sharp, Marketing Solutions Director for the Hutchinson News – our guest speaker for today

SERGEANT’S CORNER:

Sergeant Knipp and deputy Doyle Ehling could not collect the presidential fine from President Simmons who was not present. However they tapped Thad Barkley, who got stuck running the meeting. Doug Foss paid for wearing his name badge on his sleeve. Then, Sgt Knipp took the Chamber Outlook and played “who read and remembered this document” with members. Since each member of the Ambucs is a member of the Chamber through their membership, he felt this was perfectly fair. The result was lots of fines levied, since few seemed to pay much attention to the Chamber Outlook. Jeff Roberson announced that his wife, Annette, has taken a position of working with mothers counseling them of the advantages of breast feeding. Fred Conner reminded everyoneto go on line and sign up for the Fair slots. He needs help with night managers. He has shortened those shifts, no counting money. If you have problems with the sign up software, contact Fred for help.

PROGRAM:

Jeanny Sharp came to the Hutchinson News to take a position created especially for her. Having spent 16 years as Editor and Publisher of the Ottawa, KS Harris newspaper, she was ready for a new challenge. But this doesn’t stop him from participating in the kids activities.Charlie is alsoan ordained Baptist minister. He considers himself a lucky man.
