Weekly Friday Meeting of the Hutchinson Ambucs: Tom Hymer, editor

Welcome Guests: Eric Steinle introduced his son Cole, a student at HMS7. Bob Bush introduced John ODay retired State Farm Agent. Jim Seitnator introduced John Deardoff Hutchinson City Manager. Doug Foss introduced second time guest Doug Hoffman of Imperial Vending.

First Sergeant at Arms John Knipp and Staff Sergeant Randy Hendrickson patrolled the room on a friendly money making mission. In an unusual display of enforcement First Sergeant fined his own Staff Sergeant for drinking coffee in an inappropriate manner. Then Seitnator was guilty of getting in the breakfast line ahead of his guest and boss John Deardoff. His dollar fine is minuscule compared to the loss of brownie points. Bob Bush was the next target however Curtis Mitchell jumped at the opportunity to pay for Bobs fine for, hmmm, lets see, being himself?

Double your Tuits and double your fun: Dean Brigman, care-giver of the duplicate Tuit, was absent this meeting. Geoff Tolbert, care-giver of the so-called original Tuit, enthusiastically announced he is going to carry the Tuit for another week. Wow, now thats the spirit. He feels he can snag co-worker Doug Foss a couple more times plus some other Ambucs. Fair warning.

Buy a fine Announcements:

Jim Seitnator Downtown Development Director put in a plug for the Downtown Antique Appraisal Fair at Memorial Hall Saturday October 17th. Similar to other appraisal shows, individuals can purchase a ticket and bring two items to be appraised. Professional appraisers will be at the event. Tickets will also be available if people just want to watch.

Jim also spoke of a related event, the Antiques and Collectibles Auction hosted by the Reno County Museum also on Saturday October 17th that begins at 4:00pm. This fund raiser offers many authentic de-accessioned museum artifacts and antiques, click the link for more information http://www.renocomuseum.org/media/ticket_flyer.pdf .

Curtis Mitchell announced that Promise Regional Medical Center is offering the Health & Wellness Expo 2009 at the State Fair Meadowlark Building also this Saturday October 17th 8:00am to 2:00pm. There is free admission to health screens, exhibits, and presentations by doctors and medical professionals.

Words from President Scott: Scott recognized Doug Foss, Jay Pitzer and Fred Conner for their membership recruitment. He awarded Doug with a star for his big hat. Doug has brought sixteen new members into the club. When it comes to inviting guests to visit our club Doug talks with them about the mission of the club and shares his passion for the way we help people with disabilities. He hopes that when they come to a club meeting that his guests will like what we do and will want to be a part of it.

Program: Our own Bob Bush presented todays program. He talked of a story that began over a year ago when the late Al Strecker proposed to Bob and other friends that they plan a golf vacation to the golf mecca of Scotland. As it happened Al unexpectedly passed away, but not before he had made all the plans and arrangements for the trip. In Als honor, they felt it would be his wish that they make the trip, which they did in May of this year. The group of eight players included club members Rick Mitchell, Bob himself, John ODay who was a guest at this meeting, and other friends. His Power Point presentation showed many of the photos that were taken as they visited several golf courses and resorts in the country over eight days. In general golf courses in Scotland are built in the links style with deep bunkers, uneven fairways, and thick difficult rough. The fairways tend to ascend a hillside then descend in returning to the club house. Electric carts are not used, players walk or use hand carts. The photos portrayed the beauty of the county side with sheep, ancient castles, hotels and the meticulous care of the golf courses. Bob talked about many other things in a very interesting program, but one point to note this was a 100% golf vacation, no shopping, no museums. Thanks for sharing your experiences

Drawings: Scott Saylor won the 50/50 pot of $25. Jay Pitzers name was drawn for the newsletter question, however he was not present. The newsletter question for the next meeting is What are two features of a link style golf course?

Weekly Meeting of the Hutchinson Ambucs: Tom Hymer, editor

Guests: Randy Hendrickson introduced Steve Stowers who presented todays program.

The Sergeants have some mercy, for example, Kathleen Kennedy was excused for getting in the breakfast line before the sergeant because she is a new member. However there was no mercy for President Scott who was fined for embellishment of the weather, nor for Jay Pitzer for driving his car, nor for Doug Foss for living in the Highlands, nor for Jim Kicklighters tardiness.

The Round Tuit: FYI – Dean Brigman is out for a couple of weeks, fair warning. Now then, in a stunning development Jay Pitzer claimed he has the original Tuit which begs the question, what kind of Tuit did he give to Dean Brigman last week? What is going on? Well, Pitzer exclaimed and explained that this is the introduction of putting two Tuits into circulation and he bestowed todays Tuit on new member Geoff Tolbert. Hey, why not, double your Tuits and double your fun.

Club Announcements: President Scott talked about Fall Branding urging everyone to invite guests to our weekly meetings. He emphasized that new members create a ripple effect in the success of club projects with their help and enthusiasm. Scott recognized three members who over the years have brought in many new members, 18 by Doug Foss, 30 by Jay Pitzer, and over 30 by Fred Conner. A round of applause and a big attaboy for these dedicated recruiters. Scott presented a letter from Stephanie Weiler of the American Cancer Society expressing their appreciation for the support our club contributes to Camp Hope. It makes a difference to the kids with cancer that they can participate in some activities like the other kids.

Program: Randy Hendrickson introduced Steve Stowers Executive Officer of Young Marines. The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Currently there are 15 youth enrolled in the Salty Dawg local chapter, http://www.saltydawgyoungmarines.com/id15.html . They have official uniforms which cost about $150 each. Their activities include Boot Camp with 26 hours of training, color guard services at ceremonies, honoring the veterans, and performing community service. The Young Marines are a non-profit organization relying on car washes, donations, and corporate sponsorships, Walmart being the largest.

Drawings: Tom Hymer won the 50/50 pot of $25 which he donated to the Young Marines. Somebodys name was drawn for the newsletter question, however he/she was not present. The newsletter question for Friday this week is: What is the name of the local chapter of the Young Marines?

For New Members, What is the Round Tuit? Brad Thompson is the founder of the Round Tuit when he was president about 10 years ago. Its a large metal washer with Round Tuit stamped on it. When a member of the club is blessed with the Round Tuit he is responsible for the care and welfare of the Tuit until the next club meeting. During the week he should have the Tuit on his person at all times in the event that he may encounter another Ambuc(s). If that Ambuc(s) fail to ask about the Tuit they are reported at the next meeting and fined for negligence and/or ignorance. However if the Tuit care-taker does not have the Tuit when he encounters another Ambuc(s) then he must pay a fine. Tuit care-takers pay a fine to give their report and to pass the Tuit unto another Ambuc. The idea is to get to know the other members in the club and look silly in public with stupid hand gestures. What is the 50/50 pot? Like gambling and politics it has been around for a long time. Only the deceased would know when it started. At each meeting numbered tickets are sold for $1 each or 3 for $2. Generally the total proceeds are about $40 to $50 which is split in half. One half goes to the Living Endowment Fund of the Club and is directed to scholarships for student therapists. The other half is awarded to the person holding the called number of the ticket drawn. At some time it became the custom for the winner to donate the money won to non-profits and charitable organizations if they were presenting their program at the meeting.

Weekly Meeting of the Hutchinson Ambucs: Tom Hymer, editor

Guests: Clem Kilpatrick of Metal Re-cycling, invited by Scot Potucek; Doug Hoffman of Imperial Vending invited by Doug Foss; Jo Mora and Jamin Landavazo of the Reno County Museum bringing todays program; Ron Quick of Culligan Water.

Sergeants with a little mercy: John Knipp and assistant Randy Hendrickson started their session with a story about passing Brownies from vehicle to vehicle at 30th Street stop lights. The identity of the participating Ambucs is not recorded here for their own protection from law enforcement. Tom Hymer was fined for a mistake in the Newsletter, Goeff Tolbert won last weeks 50/50 pot, not Kathleen Kennedy. Dean Brigman purchased a fine to advertise the Rod Run Car Show in Downtown Hutchinson this week end.

The RoundTuit:It was said that Jay Pitzer lost the Tuit. However after frequent visits to the blasting machine at The Promise Regional Hospital he not only produced it, he also had two baby Tuits. Bizarre, but not surprising. Negligent Ambucs guilty of not caring are Larry Sloan deep in worship at church, Doug Foss and Steve Conard for calling on the phone, Steve Harmon for driving by. Dean Brigman is the new keeper of Tuit, hey, what about the two baby Tuits? Are they up for adoption?

Club Announcements:President Scott Potucek performed the induction of several new members into our chapter:

Jim Jacobs of Elliott Mortuary sponsored by Dean Brigman

Goeff Tolbert of Morton Salt sponsored by Doug Foss

Kathleen Kennedy with a new position at a Wichita law firm, sponsored by Doug Foss

Ron Quick of Culligan Water sponsored by Jay Pitzer

We welcome these people into the club. Its a great start for our Fall Branding campaign toward achieving Blue Chip honors of reaching 80 members in our club.

President Potucek announced a Board Meeting for Friday October 9th at 6:10am for planning club business for the remainder of the year.

Eric Steinle, Ice Cream Committee Chairman, announced the preliminary results of the sales at the Ice Cream Parlor of $41,500 before expenses and the cost of the ice cream. He complimented each and every member for their participation in making this event a big success and his appreciation for the dedication and support to make it run smoothly and working out the equipment problems that cropped up. In other words, Eric is saying attaboy!

Program: Scott Saylor introduced todays program from the Reno County Museum and presenters Jo Mora, Assistant Director of Development, and Lamin Landavazo, Chief Curator. Landavazo related that the aging museum buildings are showing structure and mechanical problems that must be addressed. An air conditioner failure and wall stress caused by storage of artifacts on the second floor caused closure of the museum for the summer. Two tons of artifacts were moved out the building to reduce the weight to relieve the stress. This led to analyzing the artifacts and the need to keep them. For example there are 41 antique typewriters and many other items that are subject to decommissioning. In conjunction with the Downtown Antique Appraisal Fair, Saturday, October 17, The Reno County Museum is hosting a fundraising event Antiques and Collectibles Auction. For more information click on this link: http://www.renocomuseum.org/media/ticket_flyer.pdf . Mora spoke about the attractions at the museum and mentioned these: Archival documents and photographs for study and research; Special programs and tours for schools, clubs, and organizations; The Oodleplex, an interactive area for children 2-12 years old. Mora offered details on some of building restoration projects, new steps at the Kline building and new windows at the Rosemont building. The museum supports the Ask Hutch column in the Hutchinson News.

Drawings: Scott Potucek won the 50/50 pot of $25 which he donated to the museum.Terry Brigmans name was drawn for the newsletter question, however he left early. The newsletter question for Friday this week is: What is the Oodleplex?

Weekly Meeting of the Hutchinson Ambucs: Tom Hymer, editor

Guests: Rion Rhoades HCC football coach and presenting todays program. Rex Martin administrator of Prairie Sunset Home guest of Randy Hendrickson. Jim Jacobs of Elliott Mortuary guest of Dean Brigman.

Sergeants on duty: John Knipp and his favorite toilet carrier Randy Hendrickson rang the bell at 7:15am and started their session by having all the Ambucs that worked at the Ice Cream Parlor to stand up and applaud ourselves. No one remained seated, a tribute to the dedicated members of our club. They tried to sell the Pinery ball cap left at the Ice Cream Parlor to Tom Hymer. He denied owning such a ball cap but had to pay a dollar so the sergeants would go harass someone else. They fined Ward Davis for being a whinny baby. Then there was a sudden pin check that netted some cash. Dane Power heard the bell while walking in and was fined for tardiness. Also honest Abe Jim Kicklighter paid a dollar for being late. Kathleen Kennedy learned that being a new member is no excuse for being late and she happily paid her fine. Jeff Brewer, a.k.a the Rat, reported that Brad Thompson and Jim Kicklighter played lousy golf at the TECH tournament.

The RoundTuit:After toting the Tuit for several weeks Ward Davis had an extensive report of Ambucs who ignored the chameleon washer. The violators are Steve Harmon, John Knipp, Steve Conard, Guy Gann, Randal Haltom, Curtis Mitchell, Larry Sloan, and Diane Saunders. Ward blessed the crafty Jay Pitzer with the Tuit, are you ready to show your care and concern?

Club Announcements:President Scott Potucek announced that we will be inducting new members into the club on Fridays meeting October 2nd. Lets all attend this meeting and welcome the new members into the club.

Talking about new members, Fall Branding is in full swing to invite people to visit our club to learn about us and our out-reach programs.

Preliminary results of the sales at the Ice Cream Parlor are $41,200 about $2,500 more than last year. A final report with the net results will be available after the cost of the ice cream and expenses are paid.

Everyone who attended the meeting of September 18th at the City of Hutchinsons new Water Works building certainly enjoyed the program by hypnotist Ron Diamond who presents to audiences during the State Fair. Thanks to Steve Conard for bringing us an interesting program and to Bob Bush for making the arrangements for breakfast and the meeting site at the Water Works.

Program: Guy Gann introduced our program today, Rion Rhoades Head Coach of the Blue Dragons Mens Football program at Hutchinson Community College. Rhoades was a linebacker on HCCs 1993 and 1994 teams. In December 2006 he was named the 17th head coach of the Blue Dragons. He directs six assistant coaches integral to this seasons success of 3 – 0 with a rating of #4 in the country. He draws many talented players from the surrounding area, including Hutchinson High and Andale. His working motto is Get better each week. He commented that the recent game with Fort Scott will present a major challenge and indeed it was as the Blue Dragons suffered a terrible loss. Butler is the opponent this Friday October 3rd at Gowans Stadium. Good luck Blue Dragons and thanks coach for a great program.

Drawings: New member Kathleen Kennedywon the 50/50 pot of $25.There was no newsletter question for the last meeting. However the newsletter question for Friday this week is: When was Rion Rhoads named head coach of the Blue Dragons?

Editors: Jerry Dalton & Duke Wiggins

Guests: Gary Meagher, Reno County Manager, and our speaker for this morning

Geoff Tolbert & Kathleen Kennedy, guests of Doug Foss

Ron Quick, guest of Jay Pitzer

Jim Jacobs, guest of Dean Brigman

Sergeants Playground: Sgt Knipp returned with his sidekick Deputy Hendrickson, expressing his gratitude to Larry Sloan for standing in for him last Friday by putting $1 in the pot in his honor. Next, recognition to the steak cooks who sweated over the grill at last Saturdays BlowOut. That would be Jeff Brewer, Steve Harmon and Doug Foss. However, they were each assessed a fine for mixing up the how cooked signs at the serving window. Next, every member in attendance who failed to attend the BlowOut paid a buck. Lets see they didnt show up to eat free food, and then paid a buck for not eating it. Sounds like a stupid tax to me. Eric S paid his weekly late fee and Jim K paid for telling a bad lawyer joke (are there any good ones?).

Tuit: Ward Davis was a no show and rumor has it that the Tuit is no longer yellow.

Announcements: Kudos all around for a wildly successful BlowOut last Saturday. Over 100 members, spouses, and guests attended. The food was first rate and the presentations by our community partners were both informative and entertaining. Eric S, Duke W and Fred C reported on the status of the Ice Cream Booth. American Fund Foods will deliver supplies on Friday the 4th. Ice Cream will be delivered by Sysco on the morning of Labor Day the 7th a good show of hands indicated we will have plenty of help to unload the truck. By the time Fred left this mornings meeting, virtually all work slots were filled, including several by prospective members. Eric thanked every one for stepping up and doing their part.

The next 2 meetings will be off-site as follows:

Sept 4th Meet at the Ice Cream Booth at the fairgrounds for instructions and to pick up your gate tickets. Enter at the 20th and Poplar Street gate. Someone will be stationed at that gate to direct you to the booth.

Sept 11th Meet at the WaterTreatmentCenter at 23rd and Severance for breakfast. Ron Diamond, the hypnotist from the Fair, will be our program.

Program: Doug F introduced our new County Mgr. Gary Meagher.

Gary gave us some information about his family and his past work experience. Keeping in mind Gary has been in his job approximately 30 days, he touched on some of his initial impressions regarding Reno Countys financial future, infrastructure needs etc.. Garys focus right now is budget and getting out into the community to listen to the residents. He informed us that a Bridge Fund has been formed to help with repair /replacement of bridges. Gary is pleased with the transition he is going through and is focused on being sure everyone is on the same page as the planning moves forward. Gary emphasized that planning is key, and he is working on prioritizing now. He feels the transition of having a CountyMgr. for the first time is going well. In response to a question, he said that he is taking a close look at the cost of health insurance and hopes to provide the employees with some options next year.

Eldon and Barbara Gray, volunteers for Reins of Hope, todays program

Sergeants Playground: Sheriff John off duty, but be prepared for next week at the Town Club, where he seems to feel at home.

Tuit: Once again Monte was a no-show. Maybe Brad will have to retrieve his evil spawn.

Announcements:

Doug F read an announcement from Lucas Wondra, an Amtryke recipient, whose Eagle Scout award ceremony is scheduled for August 31st at 8:00PM at the 1st Presbyterian Church at Sherman and Poplar. Lucas and his family invited all Ambucs to be their guests as part of Lucass support team.

Jeff B sold tickets for the Tech Golf Tournament Ambuc Team. Brad T invested $10 to join Rick Mitchell. Just 2 spots left. Eric S made his plea for one more clean-up day at the Ice Cream Booth before we open for business on the Sept 11th. The consensus of those volunteering agreed to show up at 5:30PM on next Tuesday, August 25th. If everyone shows, we should be done in a couple of hours.

Program: Reins of Hope, program given by Eldon and Barbara Gray. Eldon started his program by expressing how grateful Reins of Hope is for the support from AMBUCS. We increased our contribution this year, which funds, among other things, scholarships for those who cannot afford the fees to be a part of the program. Like most programs for persons with special needs, Therapeutic Riding is very labor intensive and relies on trained volunteers to keep the fees as low as possible. The program was started in 1995, and with community support from people like Roy Coffey and John Baldwin, has grown into their current facility which serves persons with disabilities through out south central Kansas. Three young ladies demonstrated a typical session which brings joy, enhances skills, and builds confidence for participants. The program serves the needs of all ages, from as young as 18 months to those in their 80s and beyond. They currently house 11 horses, all of which are mature in age, have been ridden for years, and are very docile. We were all invited to their annual auction at the Fairgrounds on Halloween Night. This is their major fund-raiser and provides families with a controlled environment for trick or treating. Eldon brought along his guitar and concluded his presentation with a poem by Kansan John Anthony Davies, which Eldon put to music. Another great investment on our community.

Thanks to Dean Brigman for arranging this great off-site meeting!!

Question for next week: What is the name of the Governor of District 5D and to what local chapter does she belong?

Next weeks meeting will be back at the Town Club, with program by USD 308

Note to Guy Gann: You are program chair. This gives you a weeks notice to make sure your program shows up.

Guests: Marcy Kauffman with Tech, Inc.

Sergeants Playground: Late to Board Meeting fines were levied on Pam B and Brad T. Darren W, who is not on the board merely wandered into the meeting and back out and that cost him a buck. Always Honest Randy Henderson paid a buck when someone from his house called to say they had just gotten up and where the heck was he. Brad T was fined again for telling his guest, Ron Simmons, that breakfast started at 8:00 think this was a setup as payback for last week. Last but not least, Kip Hildebrand was hit with a re-acquaintance tax.

Tuit: No report as Monte was not in attendance.

Announcements:

Scott reminded us of the importance in building our membership back into the 80s and beyond. We currently stand at 72 and our Blue Chip goal (10% increase) for this year is 80. One reason we are asking all members to sign up for 4 slots at the Fair Booth this year is that the current membership will really be stretched to meet this task in September. Both Fred C and Jeff B encouraged attendance at the upcoming Cookout at the Knights of Columbus Facility at 1200 West 15th on Saturday, August 29th, and bringing at least one guest (potential member) with you. The Big Hat Club will be providing steaks and baked potatoes at no cost to members, spouses, or guests. We are asking the members whose last name begins with A-M provide a salad or veggie dish. Those with last names beginning with N-Z bring something for dessert. The Big Hats will also be providing beer and wine as well as soda and tea.

Jeff B also announced that the Tech Golf Tournament will be Monday, September 21. Tickets will be sold at each meeting – $5 each or 3 for $10. If you wish to join Rick Mitchell on the AMBUCS team, look up Jeff B

An update on Ward and Erica Davis and their unborn child. They are still in Wichita keeping an eye on Ericas and the babys progress. The doctors indicate the birth will be by C-section, and could take place in the next few weeks. Be sure to keep the Davis family in your thoughts and prayers this week.

Program: Marcy let us know about a new fundraiser for Tech – Downtown Uncorked for Tech. This event will be Thursday night, 6-9pm, October 29, 2009. Standard Beverage, out of Wichita, is partnering with Tech for this event. 350 tickets will go on sale September 24 at $35. Nine Venues will offer a total of twenty different wines for tasting and provide snacks. Since the AMBUCS have been big supporters of Mainstreet Hops, she made available volunteer sign up sheets (just in case). She also stressed how tight the budget is for Tech this year and how important support from the AMBUCS has been to TECH over the years. As federal and state funds dry up, Tech has to rely even more on local fund-raising such as Downtown Uncorked for Tech.

Since the August 7th meeting was our Annual Golf Scramble held at the Highlands, I am going to dispense with the normal format. As a group we ate in the 19th Hole and hit the course. Be thinking about friends that might have an interest in becoming AMBUCS and get this evening of fun and fellowship on their calendar. Curtis Mitchell is still carrying the TUIT. Maybe well get a report on its travels next week.

Announcements: President Scott shared a thank you note from Jan Strecker, who is getting settled in her new home in Lawrence. A special thanks to those who braved the funky weather to transport her furniture to the auction site. She enclosed a contribution to Als Amtryke Fund in the amount of $100. Scott also announced that he had been contacted to build a ramp and had turned the request over to the Community Affairs committee for their consideration. Eric S announced a second painting day for this Saturday morning (7/25) at 7:30 AM. A good group of volunteers raised their hands, so count on fines for those who dont show.

The Big Hats are in charge of next Fridays meeting. Jay challenged every Big Hatter to wear his/her hat. Our program will be on CampHope with Dr. Bryan Wohlwend from the Hutchinson Clinic, the camps medical consultant. We will be making our annual contribution to this project at this meeting, so be there to learn more about one of our clubs biggest partners.

Program: Chuck Peterson returns for an encore on his program on deep-sea diving, this time concentrating on his dive off Floridas coast to explore the USS Oriskany, the worlds largest artificial reef. The Oriskany earned 5 battle stars for its service during the WWII and Korean Wars and the Vietnam conflict. It was decommissioned in 1976 and set deteriorating for 30 years until in 2006, when it was sunk to become an artificial reef. Chuck has been down to explore this huge aircraft carrier several times and has put together a video of his adventures. Chuck provided the narrative as the video allowed us to view this ship both inside and out. He related that is so quiet this far down below the surface, that he experienced the ghosting effect of hearing the sailors as they moved about carrying about their daily activities. He was especially moved by the POW Flag and plaque that have been planted beside the ship in honor of those who lost their lives while serving aboard the Oriskany. As mentioned above, several members of the public attended who had ties to this ship. Edgar and Emalene Groves son Kenneth served as a crew member. Michael Ruiz lost his brother when the ship sunk during WWII. Don Singletary served several tours of duty on board the ship. Roland Dirks had no ties to the vessel, but read the newspaper article and came as a history buff. Once again, some of our best programs come from our members. If you missed this meeting or have an interest in underwater exploration, contact Chuck at 620-727-1347.
