PROGRAM: Jeff Roberson introduced John Scott, President and CEO of Interfaith Housing Services (IHS). IHS began as an idea at a Housing Symposium in January of 1989 because of a great need in our community for assisting low-income families and individuals to meet their housing needs. That need is just as great today in Hutchinson as it was 24 years ago. One of IHSs greatest programs is their Creating Assets, Savings and Hope (CASH) program. When their clients enter this program and save a minimum of $20 per month for 6 months while participating in life skills workshops during that time period IHS will match those funds 2:1. Those funds can then be used to purchase a residence, renovate a residence, continue education or capitalize a small business. They have added a new Weatherization Inspector position to assist in federal weatherization grants for project homes. John told us of several recent success stories that IHS had coordinated the efforts, from multiple resources, to renovate homes of individuals and families. IHS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Donations can be made through Hutchinson Community Foundation and they also welcome cash and in-kind donations. Please visit their website at http://www.ihs-housing.org/ to learn more and to read about the many success stories of those they have helped.

All of the funds raised by CCRC are spent here in Reno County. The first year they helped 20 to 25 patients out of approximately 65 before running out of funds. Today there are over 200 patients in need of assistance. CCRC helps cancer patients with limited reimbursements for prescription drugs, necessary travel to and from treatment centers, wigs, hats and turbans, prosthetic devices, needed medical equipment, nutritional supplements and cancer-related dental needs. They also provide support group information. Fundraisers include the annual Reno Round-Up & Auction and the Bag Lady Luncheon.
