Jackie Koerner and Ken Moore of Communities That Care

TUIT REPORT

Jason Jones descended on the Social Committee with the Tuit in tow. All failed to ask including: Jeffs Brewer

and Frizzell. Pasta Night at the Highlands was also a popular fund-raiser with Doug Foss and Bill Long contributing.

Ten other AMBUCS were offenders as well. The TUIT was passed along to the former coach of Jasons son, Don Grossardt.

PROGRAM:

Ken Moore presented information about The Regional Prevention Center. In cooperation with U.S.D. 308, this activity seeks to combat risk factors in adolescents. Anti-social behavior, drugs, academic failure and family disharmony are all problems sought to be addressed by the program. Tutoring by adults is an effective means of improving the plight of children at risk.

The Strengthening Families Program was presented by Jackie Koerner. Designed for the needs of 10-14 year old children, the purpose is to improve communication between parent and child. Parents are provided instruction regarding love and limits and building bridges. The youth are taught techniques to deal with peer pressure, to reach out to others, to understand family values and to establish realistic goals.

Barb, ask at the Hutch High football game. The TUIT was then given a spark, so to speak, by being delivered to

Jason Jones.

PROGRAM:

AMTRYKES were given as promised to Trevor and Katy. The children were joined by their mothers, Donnie the dog and therapist, Van Tubbs.

Our speaker, Bill Drews, brought a proposal regarding Gowans stadium. Mr. Drews proposes a scaled-back renovation which has a total cost of $1,000,000. His proposal adds 800 individual seats, an updated press box and new restrooms. An East side structure would also be added which has a dressing room and concession stand. This proposal is not on the ballot on November 2. A vote against the Gowans proposal on the ballot is not a vote for this particular project.

GUESTS

Mark Treaster – Rainbow International

Mary Kaufman – State Representative

Carlotta Ponds – Community Health Coalition Director

TUIT REPORT

Brad Thompson assessed failure to ask fines on Rod Fry and Don Grossardt. Then Brad abandoned the child

of his own making and delivered the Tuit to yours truly, Paul Brown (Only because he could not find Terry Brigman!).

PROGRAM:

The first segment of our program featured the candidates for state representative for the 101st district. Democratic candidate, Mark Treaster, is a business owner, former teacher and farmer seeking the office. The Republican incumbent, Mary Kaufman, has a background in education, local political activity and seeks re-election.

The second program included Carlotta Ponds, Community Health Coalition Director, speaking on the subject of fluoridation. Adding fluoride to the public water system has been practiced since the 1950s. The purpose of fluoridation is to improve dental health. Many do not have adequate access to quality dental care.

An opposing view to fluoridation was offered by fellow AMBUC, Tony Powers. Tonys daughter is allergic to sodium fluoride which is the chemical added to the water. Calcium fluoride appears naturally in our water supply, but is not the chemical additive used for the fluoridation program.

To vote against fluoridation, you vote YES. To vote for fluoridation, you vote NO.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2004 IS ELECTION DAY. Please inform yourselves regarding the candidates and issues; and vote. Exercise the privilege that we have as a nation of free people.

GUESTS

Ed Berger, President of Hutchinson Community College

Darrell Pankratz, Pankratz Implement Company

TUIT REPORT

Stan Macgirvin, Dennis Reiser and Doug Foss all failed to ask Terry Brigman about the Tuit.

Although, there was some argument that they were sitting in their vehicles at the time (Sorry!) Then, just like the

Hatfields and the McCoys, the feud resumed with the TUIT going back to Daddy (Brad Thompson!)

PROGRAM:

Our guests, Ed Berger and Darrell Pankratz presented the Gowans Stadium Phase II Renovation plan. Phase I provided an artificial turf field, a new 8-lane track and desperately needed drainage for the entire facility. The college has invited all the schools in the county to schedule activities in Gowans Stadium on open dates. Improved walkways were installed; and even the back of the new scoreboard was utilized as a billboard (with the assistance of Luminous Neon.)

Phase II will replace the antiquated restrooms, the sub-standard showers and the inadequate concession area. Seating will be expanded to accommodate 5,000 spectators. Permanent restrooms and a new concession area will be built on the visitors side. A new press box will be handicapped accessible. Entrance gates and ticket structures will be built at the north, west and south ends of the field. The costs of the project will be paid 30% by USD 308 and 70% by HCC.

GUESTS

Terry Kilgore was a guest of Jack Mace.

Terry Winkle, our speaker, was introduced by Lori Hopp.

TUIT REPORT

Terry Brigman was anxious to give the Tuit back to its rightful owner.

So now Brad Thompson has a beautiful black and white Tuit.

PROGRAM:

Terry Winkle, the head athletic trainer for HCC, talked to us about the impact the new football field at Gowans Stadium has on his profession. The new Gridiron is called Field Turf. Unlike Astroturf, this has real grass with tons of small pieces of rubber spread across it. It is about 4 inches thick and is spongy instead of hard. It requires less maintenance than a regular field. The football team can practice and play on it instead of needing 2 fields.

What has changed injury-wise is the need to watch closely to see that the athletes stay hydrated because the field absorbs alot more heat than regular turf. Another thing they see more frequently is foreign bodies in the eye when the ball hits the turf because the rubber particles sometimes become airborne.

Club Announcements

Thank You: Received thank you notes from Sarah Halton for scholarship money, and from Tech for the money donation.

Club Awards: Eric Steinle talked about our Club Awards from the convention: Blue Chip Award, Five or More Amtryke Award, Honor Chapter, and Investing in the Future. Plus Steinle is now a top cowpoke.

FINES

Lori Hopp was fined for arriving with her guest and knowing their name when introducing them. Clearly Lori needs to take lessons from Randy Henderson and Keith Schroeder to get it right. Steve Conard was fined for falling asleep during the program a couple of meetings back. Greg West was fined for not dressing the part of a Chamber Ambassador at the fair. Randy Henderson was fined for getting to be first in line at the mass inocculation. Doug Foss was fined for having his world and the name box upside down this morning. The presentation will be made at the TECH Board Meeting, 4:30 p.m., at the Administration building, 1300 East Ave. A. We would like to invite all AMBUCS to attend and be recognized for your outstanding community service!!! Marcy Kauffman will have the camera ready!!

The presentation will be first on the agenda, and

after the presentation you would be free to go.

If you plan on stopping by on Monday,

please give Laura Miller a call, at 663-1596.

Jo Ann Williams, Director of Residential Services, TECH, Inc.

In Our Prayers: Publisher’s note Duke Wiggins experienced a mild heart attack at work on Friday and was taken to intensive care at Hutchinson Hospital. Between 5:00 and 6:00 PM (I believe), he experienced another, more serious one and was wheeled quickly to surgery. While on the operating table, a stent was placed, and more blockages were found. There were serious complications during surgery, requiring that further work be left for sometime the next week (the week of 9/13/04).

It was a frightening time for all concerned, but on Saturday evening, near the beginning of his time to be Manager at the Ice Cream Booth, he was feeling well enough to call the booth and let us know how he was feeling — and to make sure we were in good shape in his absence.

Let’s all keep Duke and Deb in our prayers this week, asking for a speedy and “complete” recovery.

TUIT REPORT

Rod Fry returned the tuit after a wild weekend at Yoder Heritage Day. Everyone he saw there remembered to ask.

However, lots of us failed at the work night. To name names, Stan Macgirvin, Brad Thompson, Duke Wiggins,

Dan Power, Jeff Brewer, Randy Henderson, and Ward Davis. Forgetting to mention it on the phone was

Don Grossardt and Jay Pitzer. Paul Brown has legal custody of the tuit this week.

R.J. related his diverse experiences to us. If you are interested in volunteering, go to the office at 9th and Walnut. RSVP has about 500 volunteers in Reno County.

Randy Henderson successfully (finally) introduced Steve Lehman and Rose Alderson of Reno Valley After School Program.

TUIT REPORT

A fairly uneventful week for Manuel Bruch and the Tuit. While digging a pond, no one

stopped by to help so Manuel paid his $ and gave it to Rod Fry. Good luck Rod!

PROGRAM:

Steve Lehman and Rose Alderson helped us become aware of what it takes to run a nationally recognized After School Program. The Reno Valley After School Program for middle school aged children is one of four to receive a national grant. They are creating parent and community awareness through many after school activities. In their 3 years of this program, they have 100% teacher participation and 92% student involvement. Sounds like they are creating a very positive environment for middle schoolers.
