PROGRAM: Kathy Hanks introduced Gary Price who began July 1 as Interim Superintendent of USD 308 for the 2017-2018 school year. Gary served in this position previously from 1995-2000. Prior to this he served in Haven, Inman and Hesston school districts before coming to Hutchinson. After leaving Hutchinson he served at Pittsburg and Olathe. He and his wife decided to return to Hutchinson for retirement. When Dr. Shelly Kiblinger resigned earlier this year to become superintendent at the Cherryvale-Thayer district in southeast Kansas the board needed to fill the position but did not want to do so quickly and contacted Gary. Community meetings will be held in October to get feedback from the public as to what they want in a new superintendent. They will open the position in November and take interview candidates until a qualified candidate is found and hired. Gary said that Hutchinson school district is in a good position with adequate funds for this next school year. He said there is a shortage of elementary teachers and paraprofessionals due to salaries lagging the past several years. He plans to urge the board to use any extra funds they have to increase salaries so good candidates can be found. He believes that the timing is right to find a good candidate to fill the superintendent position. Gary said the brick and mortar infrastructure of our district is good but that improvements need to be made to the athletic fields. He said the greatest challenge in our local schools today is the extreme behavior issues of a small minority group along with mental health issues he believes arise from earlier community drug problems.

PROGRAM: Kathy Hanks introduced Jack Gibson, Keith Neill and Michelle Waln with the Ulster Project. Michelle spoke first about her involvement in 2011 when her daughter hosted a teen girl. She liked the program so much that she became a local volunteer. The Ulster Project was started in the US in 1975 by an Episcopal reverend and an Irish priest and began in Connecticut. Since the year 2000 14 teens, 8 girls and 6 boys half Catholic and half Protestant, come to Hutchinson from Portadown Ireland to meet and discuss issues back at home. They are each hosted by a local family whos son or daughter participates with the teens from Ireland in many local activities such as the 4th of July parade, going to the Cosmosphere, Wesley Towers, T.E.C.H., the Courthouse, City Hall and the library. They also visit a Catholic, a Protestant, and their hosts church service while here. They also participate in a time of discovery to learn more about each other with assistance from Bethel College. Keith Neill was one of the teens who came to Hutchinson in 1975. He returned home, later married and began a family and because of the local connection returned to Hutchinson and is now a Director of Youth, C.E. and Mission at First Presbyterian Church. He was also able to attend the 40th anniversary of the Ulster Project held in Connecticut. Jack Gibson was a youth from Ireland who came to Hutchinson in 2012 and returns with this years group as a counselor. He said that he was a protestant at home and had catholic teen friends but came to know more about the catholic religion because of the Ulster Project experience. He said that it also gave him leadership skills that he would not have learned otherwise that allowed him to stay involved with the project. Education and religion in Ireland is still divided but the gap is narrowing each year because of the success of the Ulster Project. You can catch up with the local group before they leave at the Pretty Prairie Rodeo July 19th or July 20th at Third Thursday at Avenue A Park.

Guests: Nickee Byard and Mike Wamsley – Community in the Schools, our program for today.

New Members: Rich Shelton and Steve Beer

Sergeant’s Corner: Sheriff Troy and deputy Steve Conard started by fining every member who failed to produce a Lucky Aces ticket. They collected the Presidential fine from Thad. They then completed a pin check and then rang out.

Program:

For several years the Communities in Schools has provided funding for a staff person to help students at Hutchinson High School who are struggling in classes. That staff person is Nickee Byard, who is the listening ear, the voice of wisdom, and the source of encouragement for these students. Many of them lack adequate clothing, hygiene items, and lunch funds. Most of them lack parental guidance and support. Nickee fills the gap for these at-risk students. Unfortunately, this funding is running out on June 30, 2017. Local churches, civic organizations, and individuals such as Mike Wamsley have banded together to raise awaarness of this situation and raise funding so that Nickee can continuing her efforts. To date $58,000 has been raised, which should continue the program for at least this year. The next step is to search out future funding through grant writing, tapping into funding that supporters are convinced is available. We can help by spreading the word that this program is much needed at HHS.

Drawings:

Lucky Aces 50/50 drawing was won by Duke Wiggins, who donated his $5 to the new Salthawk Community Support Program.

The newsletter drawing went to Bob Tolar, who was had to leave for work before the drawing. Pot goes to $10. Next weeks questionis “What is the new name for Nickee’s program at HHS?”

PROGRAM: Kathy Hanks introduced Steve Conard and Steve Harmon who presented a PowerPoint history talk on the Kansas State Reformatory. The photos presented were from 1895-1950. Hutchinson was chosen over 11 other Kansas communities vying to secure the State Reformatory. Hutchinson put up $25,000 and one section of land towards the $1,000,000 construction project. The Santa Fe railroad built a switch track to haul the limestone from Cottonwood Falls and Florence. It took 10 years before the first two-story cell block was completed in 1896 to accept 50 prisoners from Lansing. The second 4-story cell block was completed in 1900. The wall surrounding the facility was started in 1903 and completed by inmates in 1910. Since this was a reform school for wayward boys early trades offered were Blacksmithing, Barbering, Bakery, Bookkeeping, Carpentry, Cooking, Engineering, Farm Machinery, Shoemaking, Tailoring, Typing, Ditch digging and Planting, Unclassified Outdoor Work and Stone Cutting. The last certificate awarded for a completed course of study was 1936. In a report made in July 1900 28% of the inmates received at the reformatory were unable to read or write and only 1% were unable to do so when released. Nearly 60% of the inmates received prior to 1900 were orphans.
