PROGRAM: Harley Macklin introduced Pastor Tim Carey, Emanuel Lutheran Church. Tim grew up in the Chicagoland area. After 4 years of college and 4 years of graduate school he wanted to pastor a rural church. He was pasturing a church in Eureka, Kansas and then Northwest Missouri before coming to Hutchinson. He has pastured Emanuel Lutheran here for 17 years. He also has 3 children living here and now 5 grandchildren. Tim began by praising some behind the scenes activities here in Hutchinson. First, our clubs efforts operating the ice cream booth at the state fair for 30 years and touching so many lives with the fruits of our labor in our community. Second, the Hutchinson Public Library for their many diverse services to the community of which is too many to list here. Third, the education of our youth which helps to set the path for excellence in life. One example is the Early Education Center who utilizes some of the classroom space at the church for their 3 year old pre-school program. While Tim sees so many positives in Hutchinson he also encounters the daily struggles such as 30 people who contacted the church for assistance during a recent week. This time of year is particularly bad for poverty, drugs and mental problems. Statistically one in four people has issues with one in nineteen having major mental problems. On the average 100 homes in Hutchinson has their water turned off each month due to non-payment. These were just a few of the sad stories that he told. All entities and individuals of our city must band together to solve these problems. There are many working behind the scenes to solve these and other problems and there is always more that needs to be done. Think about it!

Their new slogan Healthy Living Community Spirit continues that theme. Elmdale Park is now a full Senior Center including the Wellness Room and lunch provided 3 days a week to about 100 seniors. Their other facilities include the downtown office, Dillon Nature Center, Fun Valley Sports Complex, Hobart-Detter Field and Salt City Splash Aquatic Center. The additional gyms have really helped the youth basketball program allowing better scheduling of games. They are searching for a new director for the Dillon Nature Center with the recent announcement of Mary Clarks retirement. PROGRAM: Although Darrin Wicks arranged our program Kathy Hanks introduced our guests Dr. Jon Tilton DDS and Dr. Susan Evans DDS. Local dentist Dr. Evans is the local coordinator for the Kansas Mission of Mercy dental program. Dr. Tilton explained that the program began in 2003 and is one of the projects of the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation to provide free dental care to all ages of patients in Kansas. Since 2003 they have provided over $16 million dollars worth of free dental care to over 27,800 patients in 10 different Kansas cities. Normally only one event is held per year due to the magnitude. February 9-10, 2018 will be their second visit to Hutchinson having been here previously in 2011, helping 1,638 patients in those 2 days. Their main focus is cleanings, filings and extractions although they will try to help with other dental needs. Unfortunately about 3,500 teeth were extracted during that last visit here. It takes hundreds of licensed dentists and hygienists who donate their talents along with a small army of volunteers to provide for the necessary peoplepower for the two-day event. It also takes a large amount of mobile dental equipment. Videos, free literature and free dental supplies are provided while patients wait for treatment. If you would like to volunteer to help work, provide food or other items needed for the workers during the event or a cash contribution; please contact Dr. Evans at 620-663-5297.
