Opening Ceremony: President Elect Jeff Roberson, having no bell to ring, called the meeting to order with great gusto. Doug Foss followed with prayer, thanking the Lord for another beautiful day while rain was beating on the roof of the metal building that houses Reins of Hope. Since Mr. Roberson failed to bring a flag (poor training by past president Darren Wicks), Dan Power used his cell phone flag app to dial up an American Flag to which we all pledged our allegiance.

Guests: Danette Chermak, who is an instructor with Reins of Hope, and in charge of todays program. Maurice Cummings and Don Kueck are board members of Tech and active in the Reins of Hope program. Jerry Rempe, from DCI, came as a board member of Reins of Hope.

Board of Directors Dont forget your meeting next Friday at 6:15AM at the Town Club.

Program: Danette Chermak told me before the meeting that she had a client coming in from Kingman to demonstrate a horse new to the program. With the rain and high waters, I think she and her parents chose to be smart and stay home. We did get to look at several of their horses, but any attempt to be heard from the arena was impossible. We had a good visit, a great meal, and we all wished we had brought our umbrellas like Reta Joy. I dont know of anyone who got stuck, but with the rain and construction, I think I got half-way to Great Bend before I figured out where I was and how to get back to Kuhn Krause. Only took 45 minutes to make a 15 minute trip.

Upcoming Program: Peter Miller, Director of the Hutchinson Municipal Airport.

Drawings: No tickets no drawings no newsletter question for the next meeting.

Newsletter 08/02/2013

Guests: Cornelia Stevens, who is the South Central Region Program Director for the Kansas Childrens Service League and our guest speaker for today.

Our Opening prayer was given by Colby Davis, and he did an excellent job, bringing a round of applause from all in attendance.

Sergeants Playground: Brad T and Stan M rang in and immediately went to President Dane to collect his weekly fine. Darren W once again paid Danes fine for not having not having his presidents pin. Brad noticed that one of four Edwards Jones financial consultants failed to were his official outfit this morning. Dan P, Darren W, and Dane P all had on their dark blue power suits. Jay P appeared to be way too casual this morning in kackies and a short sleeve shirt, not even wearing a jacket. That cost Mr. P $1 for being out of uniform. Brad requested this editor to announce the expansion of his immunity from fine program. To be immune from a fine of any kind, a member must wear his pin, have a Breakfast Card in his possession, and if there are no guests at the meeting (excluding the guest speaker), every member pays a buck. If you sign up a new member, you are immune from all fines for the rest of this AMBUC year (through May 2014).

Announcements: Randall H reported on the Membership/Social Committee meeting this morning. They are continuing to focus on how to increase membership during the year. They are convinced that we need to bring guests to meetings and work with those who sponsor guests on how to follow up to complete the process of membership. If you have input or ideas contact Randall @ 665-7177, 899-5500, or email him at randall@ehm.kscoxmail.com.

Dont forget!! Next weeks meeting will be at Reins of Hope. Breakfast will be served by Knackies. The location is 2216 N. Obee Road. The easiest way is to go east on 30th street to the Prairie Dunes Sign, then turn south on Obee Road for mile.

The annual golf tournament will be on Friday, August 23rd at the Carey Park clubhouse. Breakfast will again be served by Knackies. Cost will be $42 per golfer, which includes green fees and cart. The sign up sheet will be available at next Fridays meeting, or you can contact Guy Gann at 669-1230 or g_gann@yahoo.com.

Due to next weeks off-site meeting, the Board Meeting will be postponed until Friday August 16th at 6:15AM at the Town Club.

Program: The Kansas Childrens Service League (KCSL) is currently making communities aware of the public health issue of Child Maltreatment. Cornelia Stevens came prepared to explain to us why this is such issue in Kansas. Child maltreatment is defined as all types of abuse and neglect of a child under the age of 18 by a parent, caregiver, or another person in a custodial role that results harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child including physical, sexual, and emotional abuse or neglect of the welfare of a child. Studies of control groups during the last few years have provided a wealth of statistics about the maltreatment of children through out this country. The numbers are startling. Nationwide, 3 million reports have been made of abuse or neglect. Nearly 11/1000 children are confirmed as having been subjected to abuse or neglect. Just under 1,800 children die each year as a result of maltreatment. The Reno County numbers are just as alarming. 1,714 reports were received of abuse/neglect were received by the DCF during the year ended June 30 2013. Of those, 939 were considered worthy of investigation, and 108 were determined to be the result of abuse/neglect. That is the 8th highest rate in the state. Recent studies have show that much of this maltreatment goes back to very young ages and continues into successive generations. KCSL has taken the initiative to develop their Healthy Family Program, where families can be exposed to healthy ways of dealing with stress of everyday problems which can lead to unacceptable treatment of children. The focus is to reach families before the abuse occurs. Interestingly enough, a childs early environment has a direct effect on how they behave throughout their lives. Mrs. Stevens pointed out the heavy economic strain this places on our countrys already over-burdened budget. She encouraged us to report suspected child abuse by calling 1-800-922-5330, support child abuse prevention awareness activities, or choose to volunteer within the community.

Upcoming Program: See you at Reins of Hope next Friday

Drawings: Paul Brown had the lucky ticket and donated the $14 pot to the National AMBUC Foundation. The Newsletter pot of $10 would have gone to Curtis Mitchell if he had been in attendance.

We will not have a newsletter question for our meeting at Reins of Hope.

Newsletter 07/26/2013

Guests: Tonya Powers, daughter of Tony and Valerie Powers and our speaker for today

Sergeants Playground: Brad T and Stan M were back in the saddle again. Paying late arrival fines were Drenda S and Andrew P. President Dane paid his weekly fine and then paid because he did not have his Presidents pin. When he explained that he never received his Presidents pin or plaque from now Past President Darren W, the sheriffs brought him into the picture and then fined Jay P for not ordering the pins. Somehow all this ended up being over $20 to the fine pot. Reta Joy C paid an in the way fine for driving around during Tuesday nights hail storm. Mark T and Doug F paid guilt by association fines for sitting at the wrong table with the wrong people. Ward D paid for not having on his pin (I think Colby ratted him out again). Then Brad brought up the fact that a Budweiser sign now sits on Dan Powers Edward Jones office. He assessed Dan a fine for allowing this to happen and then got Jay P for not having such a sign above his office. Dont know how he missed the only other Edward Jones advisor sitting right in front of him. Bob Mr. Bud himself paid some sort of an advertising tax. During this plethora of activity, Deputy Stan circled the room looking for pins and breakfast cards. Having now annoyed everyone, they rang out.

Announcements: Dont forget to mark your smart phones and calendars with the two off-site meetings in August. On the 9th we will meet at Reins of Hope. Dont know what Ward has planned for this year, but its always interesting. On the 23rd we will all meet at the Carey Park Clubhouse for breakfast and our annual golf scramble. See Guy Gann to sign up and make donations for performance prizes. Fred C passed around the Ice Cream Booth sign up sheets, reminding everyone that we need 3 to 4 shifts from every member to cover this years man and womanpower needs.

Program: Tonya Powers introduced herself proving that her debate training has inspired her to be a very assertive and confident young lady. She has been a part of debate classes and competitions since the 7th grade, and last January she and her partner of many years won top honors at the National Debate Competition. She reminded us that as a small child, she was very shy and self-conscious due to her stuttering problem. She credits her debate training with giving her the courage to overcome these problems. She also pointed out studies have shown that debaters as a group score several points higher than non-debaters on the ACT tests. She is currently a senior at Kansas Wesleyan University and has already received scholarship offers from several graduate programs. While many successful debaters go on to lucrative careers in the legal and business arenas, her goal is to complete a masters program and become a debate teacher and coach on the college level. I dont think she left a doubt in anyones mind that she will be success.

Upcoming Program: Cornelia Stevens of the Kansas Childrens Service League. She will be guest of Reta Joy Campbell.

Drawings: The 50/50 pot of $17 went to Roger Peterson, who donated it to Tonya. Tony immediately assumed this meant a free lunch for him. Not bad for a quarter. The Newsletter drawing would have gone to Sheriff Randy Henderson had he been in attendance. The correct answer was Uncorked for Tech. The pot now moves to $10 and the question is What are the dates and locations of our two off-site meetings in August?

Editor: Duke Wiggins

Newsletter 07/19/2013

Guests: Marci Kauffman of Tech Inc. our speaker for today, and Carmen Jantz, a Tech Inc. client.

Sergeants Playground: Today featured our favorite sheriffs Ward and Colby. Right away Colby got so excited about all the money coming his way that he couldnt hang onto the toilet. Randall H paid for being late to his own committee meeting this morning. Dwight W, Doug F, and Fred C paid for grossing out Colby with their conversation about snot and boogers during their committee meeting. Bob B paid for waving at Colby but not saying a word to him. Mark T was fined for doing hard labor since he was driving his carpet cleaning van instead of his usual sales vehicle. Larry S paid for something, but I am sure it was perfectly legit. Jeff R purchased a fine for celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary. I think he took his wife to Taco Bell as a special treat.

Announcements: Randall H announced two off site meetings during August. We will meet at Reins of Hope on August 9th and our annual Golf Scramble will be at Carey Park on August 23rd. Watch for more details to come. Doug F announced an Ice Cream Booth work day for August 3rd at 8:00. We need to paint some spots on the booth. No big fix-up projects expected this year (we hope).

Program: Jeff R introduced Marci Kauffman of Tech, Inc., who began by looking back 40 years to the idea that gave birth to the Training and Evaluation Center of Kansas in Hutchinson. A local attorney, Elwin Cabbage and his wife Margaret were struggling with how to provide a life for their disabled son.

Their philosophy centered on keeping him local so that he could be cared for and supported by his family. At that time, the only thing available was institutionalization, which they could not support. They got together with several other families with similar situations and put together a plan that has grown into what we know as Tech, Inc. If you peruse their website (www.techinc.org) you will see just how large and how far their programs reach into the Hutchinson/Reno County community. This years biggest expansion has been the move of the Adult Life Skills program to West Avenue B. The building has been totaling renovated inside and out and has allowed for this program to provide many opportunities for clients to develop important skills moving them toward independence. Marci then introduced Carmen Jantz, one of their great success stories. She has been part of the program for 18 years. She works at Walmart in the Janitorial Dept. She is purchasing her own house, and she and her friend Philip live there together. Philip works at McDonalds on 4th street. They met at Plum House Techs first offsite living center. She is very creative and has been very successful with her entries at the Kansas State Fair. She and Philip are great examples of individuals overcoming their special challenges to be productive citizens in our community. Marci ended her presentation by thanking the Hutchinson Ambucs for being one of their most important annual supporters of their facilities and programs.

Drawings: The 50/50 pot of $14 was won by this editor, who donated it to Tech. The Newsletter drawing went to Reta Joy Campbell, who donated the $30 to Tech. The question for Friday the 26th is

Name the Tech fundraiser to be held on Friday, August 9th. You can find it on their website. The pot is back to $5.

Upcoming Program: Tonya Powers, daughter of Tony and Valerie, who this year won National Forensic Honors for her presentation. Expect to be well entertained.

Newsletter 07/12/2013

Guests: Warren Boman Manager of the Hutchinson Community Garden and our speaker for today.

Sergeants Playground: Deputy Sheriff Stan Macgirvn and his toilet carrier Jeff Brewer began by collecting the weekly fine from President Dane. Then Stan asked this editor about the Newsletter question for today. When I responded that I would reveal the answer at the appropriate time, I was fined $1 for you speakee-you payee. Larry S paid a whining tax for something said during the weekly Dead-Butt Society meeting. Fred C paid a breathe easy tax for something said at the same meeting. Ward D ratted on Darrin W by presenting the Sgts with a rather poor picture of our past president with his pants rolled up wading in the water after a recent water leak. Since Darrin would not allow the picture to circulate among members I did not see where the leak happened. However it was noted that he did have on a shirt of some kind. The boys finished up by checking for pins and breakfast invitation cards.

Announcement: Fred C announced that the Ice Cream Sign Up Board was now available. Each member is asked to take at least 3 shifts during the 10-day Fair. He has eliminated some slots during the days, but a year ago we had more members on our roster. He is starting his work earlier since the fair starts on Sept 6th this year, which means we start making cones on the 3rd. Doug F announced an Ice Cream Booth Committee meeting for next Friday at 6:30 AM. Randall H announced a Membership/Social Committee meeting for the same time, so if youre on both committees, you may run around like a confused chicken until the regular meeting starts.

Program: If you are a gardener who has just moved to a new location where the yard will not accommodate your traditional garden, you need to meet Warren Boman. If you would like to learn to grow your own vegetables, you need to meet Warren Boman. Just who is this mysterious fellow? After todays program those in attendance knew him well. He is the manager of the Hutchinson Community Garden located at Wall Street and Severance. The land was donated to the city and it worked out perfectly for the use of gardeners. It has a strong source of water, which the city provides at no charge.

It has tillable soil and adequate shade. The area is divided into 168 plots which are rented to gardeners at $30 to $50 a year, the year running from March 1st to November 15th. All the lots are currently occupied with a waiting list of several who are interested for next year. Warren also acts a consultant for those who wish to learn more growing their own food. He reported learning about two new crops that can be grown in Kansas. If you can name one of those surprise crops when your name is drawn later in the meeting, you could win $30.

Drawings: The 50/50 pot of $17 was won by Jim Seitnater, who immediately offered to by beer for everyone (just kidding Jim). President Dane announced that he had spent many hours since last week reworking the sack of chips for the Newsletter drawing. He even had it audited by Don G, but Don refused to express his opinion on the accuracy of the final result. The pot was $25 and the question was easy. We expected a winner. The first name drawn from the reworked sack of chips was Mark Clark, who was not in attendance. So the pot builds to $30 for next Fridays meeting. Next Fridays question is Name one of the 2 surprise crops grown in the Hutchinson Community Garden this year.

Upcoming Program: Marci Kauffman from Tech, IncC, who will fill us in on the upcoming Uncorked for Tech fundraiser and the 40th anniversary plans. She will be accompanied by Carmen Jantz, a very special Tech client.

Newsletter 06/28/2013

Guests: Dave Jones–United Cerebral Palsy of KS; Warren Boman–Hutchinson Community Garden. Both were guests of Jeff Roberson, both scheduled to be our speaker for this morning. I am sure the Sergeants will want to investigate this dilemma.

Sergeants Playground: Brad and Stan collected their easiest fine ever, as Sheriff Randy Henderson volunteered to pay a membership renewal tax of $20. President Dane paid his weekly tax thats $1 each for last week, this week, and next week, WHEN WE ARE NOT MEETING. Late fines were levied upon Tim D and John K. Jeff B got caught associating with a bunch of losers. Tom H had to pay for a cell phone mishapyoud think he could handle that after 75 years with Alltel and Verizon. Brad and Dan Power were at the same Chamber meeting and Brad was unimpressed with Dans corny jokes, costing Dan a $1. Darren W announced the birth of a new grandson. Jay P barely survived a wild night, explaining why he is moving so slowly this morning. Curtis M, Guy G, Bob B, Eric S, and Ward D all flunked the pin check, costing each one a $1. Fred C paid to advertise the Mid-State Street Rods car show at Carey Park on July 3rd from 6:00PM until dark. There is no entry fee to show a car and no charge for admission. Craig J paid his $1 to fink on Harley M for mowing his lawn without a shirt on. Since nobody would touch this, the boys rang out.

Announcement: There is no meeting next Friday, so dont show up and be embarrassed.

Program: Dave Jones is the Executive Director of United Cerebral Palsy of Kansas (UCP-K), located in Wichita, KS. It was founded in 1953 by a group of parents seeking to provide educational & therapeutic services for disabled children. Its mission is to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with CP and other disabilities. This original dream has grown to a large operation, providing training and jobs for challenged persons, living facilities for those who do not function well in the normal family setting, and are a source of funding and resources for individuals and families who cannot afford to high cost of equipment and services required to remain functional. Center Industries of Wichita, KS provides both jobs and training to enable those with disabilities to become productive citizens rather than burdens on our already challenged health and welfare programs. Several websites will give you a better idea of the scale of this organization. Try www.ucpks.org. or www.cprf.org.

Drawings: Curtis Mitchell won the $16 50/50 pot and donated it to UCP-KS. The newsletter drawing would have gone to Don Rogers had he been in attendance and STILL A MEMBER. That little bag of chips needs some serious work. The question for the meeting on July 12th is How many members showed for the July 5th meeting and left a message for the Sergeants with the Town Club staff? Make your guess and maybe claim $25.

Upcoming Programs: July 12th Warren Boman of Hutchinson Community Garden; July 19th TECH
