THE WEEKLY FUND RAISER: Sergeants Brad and Stan rang the bell to commence their tour of duty. Right off the bat John Knipp paid in order to leave early. Duke got fined for being retired and picking up trash in the Kuhn Krause parking lot? Supposedly Doug was telling corny jokes but nobody laughed, whatever. Hey, have you heard that the Department of Agriculture is banning the use of those big round bales you see in the fields. It seems the government wants to be sure that the cattle get a square meal. Groan if you must. Going from table to table the sergeants gathered dollars from Randal Haltom for sending an email, Reta Joy for being the only girl attending today, Terry Brigman and Pat Fallon for sitting with the only girl as she noted her great looking shoes. As the toilet was flooded with dollars, the sergeants rang out, their tour of duty completed.

He spoke of a number of hazards that can infect any computer and cause a lot of damage. There are viruses, hackers, identity thieves, spy ware, and cryptolocker which is a virus that disables a computer and makes all files unavailable. Because it is a ransom scheme the user can pay money to get the files released, nasty. He suggested Carbonite as a good back up program and AVG as good program to combat viruses and other malicious computer threats. Also we should use strong passwords for access to one-line banking, credit cards, and any other important and sensitive data.

The Ice Cream Booth met for the first time on Friday to begin putting together a long term plan for the Booth project at the State Fair. I am including some of the bullet points discussed by the committee:

1) The Ice Cream booth has been and continues to be a viable option to raise funds as a club.

2) There are 3 options for the booth 1) Build New 2) Remodel Current 3) do nothing

3) New building costs (est. $80,000 – $125,000) includes teardown, etc.

4) The net profits from the Fair have declined in recent years. I will have those figures at the Nov 1st meeting.

5) Jim Seitnator suggested we take this opportunity to start from scratch and review the complete business model of the Ice Cream booth and this review might help us make long term decisions on the physical booth. The group agreed.

6) President Dane Power suggested we also use a Pro/Con T chart to review this project as well.

The next meeting is November 1st at 6:15 a.m. ALL MEMBERS are invited as this is a big decision and all input is welcome. This project will no doubt have some controversy within the club as any decision this large would. We want to approach this with an open mind and all input is welcomed. I look forward to seeing you on November 1st.

The Ambucs National Office is moving the Fall Regional Conferences to the Spring and the National Conference to the Fall, thus the term The Last Dance. There is an idea of organizing a social event that would include our club and the Salina clubs at the Salt Museum. Jeff attended group sessions that discussed membership issues, that is acquiring new members and retaining the existing ones. Suggestions offered were making contact with Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce members, calling members who have not come to a meeting in awhile, sitting at a different table at our regular weekly meetings, Big Hats fulfill their role, and setting a goal of 10 new members. Nationally there are about 700 kids on a waiting list for Amtrykes. The Salina clubs have taken action to provide Amtrykes in the Kansas City area. Jeff is the first member to attend the Fall Conference from our club in several year as noted by Guy Gann and others in our club. Thanks to Jeff for going and bringing us some ideas and goals to work on.

MEETING: Friday, September 27, 2013 EDITOR: Tom Hymer

TODAYS PROGRAM: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County, presenters John Buckley and Quentin Benning. BBBS was founded in 1904 New York and serves about 63,000 children in twelve countries. In Hutchinson the office is located at 930 N. Main Street. The mission of BBBS is to provide mentors for boys and girls that need a role model in a variety of problem settings. Mentors are often called bigs and the children are called littles. Together bigs and littles are called matches. The matches can take on various forms, school matches, couple matches, and traditional matches in which the big and little meet together once a week for a couple of hours. Their meetings can involve all kinds of activities that include watching a movie, shooting baskets at the Carey Park courts, and going to the YMCA. The results of a match keep kids out of trouble, sets up a line of responsibility for the little, and improves learning and improved behavior in school. John and Quentin are case managers to lead, assist, and create matches. Their jobs include background checks, matching a little with a big, weekly contact and assessment progress, and documenting their work. Both of them have been on the job for about 9 months and are making a super contribution in Reno County. Currently there are 78 kids waiting for a big, most of them are boys. Call John or Quentin at 620-662-8161 to ask about being a big or to ask any questions.

CLUB ENFORCEMENT: There were no guests today. Remember what Sergeant Brad says, bring guests or pay! There was a report on the Golf teams, apparently they finished playing, end of report. Ward Davis and Tom Hymer were both fined for failing to produce last meetings newsletter. Guy Gann learned that complaining about the speed of the ceiling fans has a price. Paul Brown and Duke Wiggins were almost late, whatever that means, and Craig Johnson was accused of throwing them under the bus, figuratively of course, and in reality all were fined. Strange but true, the money in the toilet consisted of 2 twenty dollar bills. And a thorough search of the financial records for last 33 years reveals this has heretofore never happened. Finally the membership was treated with Kansas City Chiefs trivia. Actually that was kinda entertaining, as it included the Neil Smith rule that a defensive lineman cannot flinch in order to cause a false start by the offence.

50/50 DRAWING: Stan Macgirvin won the 50/50 pot of $22 and donated his winnings to BBBS. NEWSLETTER DRAWING, hmmm, apparently the editor was distracted and doesnt know. Ka-Ching. For $25 the Newsletter question for the meeting on October 4th is What is the Neil Smith rule?

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Doug Foss wants to remind the Community Service Members of their meeting on this coming Friday October 4th at 6:30AM.
