She was awarded a scholarship from the National AMBUCS Scholarships for Therapists Program. She spoke about that she got interested in PT by helping her Dad with his PT following shoulder surgery and helping friends with their sports injuries. She is looking forward to helping patients improve their quality of life using physical therapy and working the various ages of patients and building relationships with them.
Lauren Rumbaugh, Miss Rodeo Kansas spoke about growing up in Dodge City, Kansas just blocks from the rodeo arena and showing horses here at the state fair. While attending and later participating in the rodeo in Dodge City she saw many rodeo queens parade through and never thought she would one day be promoting rodeo as a rodeo queen at various locations in Kansas and around the county. She just graduated from K-State with a degree in Animal Sciences & Industry.
Kathy Hanks introduced Teresa Preston, Professor of Fine Arts at HCC. An artist and art historian Teresa presented a PowerPoint show of her many trips over a 15 year period to Ghana West Africa to study art. She told of her writing a paper on the Adornments of Africa and her pursuit to see first hand how they are produced. She especially wanted to learn how to cast hollow glass beads and to cast bronze. Besides bead making and bronze casting she also learned batik and tie-dye, weaving and adinkra. Every village specializes in one art form and everyone in the village participates in producing it for market. Pottery is more utilitarian in nature because of the need. In 2011 a group of artists from Ghana were brought to the United States to teach workshops on their crafts to HCC and Northern Kentucky University. 2013 was her last time there with a group. Why Ghana? It is one of the few English speaking countries and one of the safest to travel to.
