Hutchinson Ambucs

Newsletter editor: Tom Hymer

Guests:

Mark Buckley was the guest of Jim Seitnator and Lt. Rob McClarty S.W.A.T. of Reno County was the guest of Randy Henderson.

The Sergeants Playground:

Sergeant John Knipp and his toilet toting side-kick Randy Hendrickson fined fellow banker Pat Fallon, proving that bankers really do care about their own species. Steve Harmon was fined for eating lunch all day long, not returning phone calls and not mixing paint. Did Steve mumble something about an orange store as he paid his fine? President Al Strecker left his black book unattended and was forced to pay for its recovery. Hey Al, that wont happen again, right? Sergeant John has decided to revive the Ambuc of the day routine in which the chosen Ambuc has a couple of minutes to say a little ditty about him or herself. John offered Reta Joy Campbell the opportunity in which she said that she is the chaplain for Tyson Foods, she is engaged in pastoral care ministries, and she believes in Ambucs because of our out-reach programs. Thank you Reta Joy.

Adventures of The Round Tuit:

Mark Clark loves the Tuit so much that he did not show up today so he could have it for another week.

Randy Henderson paid for a blurb about a Back to the 80s Concert by Buhler High School for Saturday evening.

Jim Seitnator AND Mark Buckley asked for a crew of members to help with hanging lights in Downtown Hutchinson on the evening of Tuesday November 18th. Volunteers should meet at 6:00pm at the park at Avenue A and Main Street. They said that they need sturdy 8 feet ladders for hanging lights of the poles. The work should take about 2 hours and there will be a gathering at Carls Bar afterwards. Thanks to all participants.

Club Announcements:

There will be no meeting on Friday November 27 the day after Thanksgiving.

Brenda Janda announced that Friday December 12th the club will have breakfast at the Airport Steak House and afterwards we will prepare the gift boxes for Headstart at Sloans place of business L & B Storage.

President Al Strecker gave Brad Thompson a commendation for personally delivering an Amtryke to Marcella in Lawrence, KS. Thanks to Brad for the extra effort and the time he took in helping this client.

Pam Brooks introduced her plan to bring more new members to Ambucs. Using the Chamber Membership Directory she identified potential people to contact in order to tell them about Ambucs. Members of the club will be responsible for calling about 10 prospects and inviting them to breakfast to learn about our club. Pam is personally distributing a list of names to each member. When you get your list be sure to make calls to those people. In the past this has been an effective method of bringing visitors who might become members.

The Annual Christmas Party is Thursday December 4th. Put this date on your calendar. A sign-up form is included at the end of this newsletter that has all the details. It looks like you have some options in signing-up. You could complete the form and e-mail it to Jeff jbbrewer@luminousneon.com. You could print out the form and fill-in the required information and give it to Jeff or fax it to him at 620-665-7006. Or you could sign-up on a form that will be passed around during the next few meetings.

Program:

Randy Henderson introduced the program presenter Lt. Rob McClarty commander of S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics) of Reno County. S.W.A.T.s number one objective is saving lives, lives of hostages and innocent citizens, lives of the perpetrators, lives of law enforcement officers. The S.W.A.T. team of Reno County has 20 specially trained people with various skills in weapons, tactics, dispatch communications, and negotiations. Negotiating is the primary tool to resolve situations with barricaded subjects or people being held hostage. Use of force is only the very last resort. S.W.A.T. responds to about 16 18 situations annually in Reno County and 2 3 times in surrounding counties. S.W.A.T. also responds to disaster events and is called upon for dignitary protection. S.W.A.T. team members spend 8 12 hours each month in training. This extensive training prepares the team in the use of body armor, weapons of all kinds, uniforms, communications, and tactics.

Program:

Randy Henderson introduced the program presenter Michael J. Chisam General Manager of Kansas Ethanol LLC located in Lyons, KS. Mr. Chisam delivered an extensive and interesting program about the ethanol industry. The industry has formed a public relations group called Growth Energy and has hired Newt Gingrich to promote the benefits of ethanol. Kansas Ethanol is a partner with ICM located in Colwich, KS. This company designs and builds ethanol plants. Mr. Chisam talked about the Pratt ethanol plant which was designed poorly by a German company and suffered wind damage. This plant is now under new ownership and trying to recover. Kansas Ethanol processes about 20 million bushels of grain per year at the Lyons plant with about 35 employees. The grain, mostly Milo, comes from the surrounding area. Before the plant was built extensive research was made in order to be certain that the grain supply would be adequate. When grain is processed into ethanol a by-product is created called wet distillers grain. This product is processed so it can be sold to feed lots thereby providing another revenue stream for the plant. Mr. Chisam commented on several miss-conceptions that give ethanol a negative publicity. Ethanol plants do not receive government subsidies. In the beginning stages ethanol plants were subsidized, however the subsidies have expired some time ago. It takes about 2 to 4 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of ethanol which is considered excessive. However refining oil into gasoline requires 4 to 9 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of gas. According to studies at K-State and Texas A & M the impact of ethanol production on food prices is less than 3%. Mostly food prices have increased due to other causes, fuel costs, rising commodity markets, and producer costs. Mr. Chisam closed his program by underscoring the urgency of developing other energy sources. The United States imports about 750 billon dollars of oil from unfriendly and in some cases terrorist nations. This huge amount of money is more than the Defense budget.

HUTCHINSON AMBUCS

Editor: Tom Hymer

Guests:

Linda Harrison and Todd Laffoon representing the Promise Regional Medical Center were introduced by Curtis Mitchell. Tom Hymers guest was Mitch Harris and this is his second visit to the club.

The Sergeants Playground:

It was the fifth Friday of October which means the Big Hats run the meeting. Co-incidentally it was Halloween, so the Big Hats came wearing their hats. They were not very scary. So Big Hats Brad Thompson and Doug Foss masqueraded like sergeants and managed to scare some money out of innocent members. Here is a record of some of the victims. Bob Bush and Eric Steinle paid for exhibiting a lack of leadership. Curtis Mitchell was dinged for setting up the power point screen backwards. Al Strecker and Steve Harmon were fined for unknown reasons. Tom Hymer paid for letting his guest mingle with other Ambucs. Brenda Janda was wearing a costume of over-alls and a red shirt which earned her the admiration of Sergeant Brad, but he fined her anyway.

Adventures of the Round Tuit:

Dennis Reiser gave his account caring for the Round Tuit. He discovered some Ambucs who did care about the Tuit and they were Steve Conard and Eric Steinle at a football game, Doug Fosss uncle at a wedding, and Dan Powers son Dane. Now then, in the past it has been the practice to name in the newsletter the Ambuc who was given the Tuit for the upcoming week. However if this information is omitted the members would be required to remember who has the Tuit therefore increasing the care and concern for the Tuit, a very admirable goal.

No one was willing to buy a fine.

Club Announcements:

Jay Pitzer and Duke Wiggins were voted in (railroaded is the more accurate term word) as Big Hat officers. They seemed very happy about their new appointments.

The annual Ambucs Christmas Party is planned for Thursday December 4, 2008.

Jay has established another AMBUC work day to continue helping Keith and Stephanie Guthrie at Sundance Farms. They still have a lot of work to complete in preparation of her mothers return to the farm. It will be the coming Saturday (11/7) at 10AM. Thanks to those who helped last week hope to see you there Saturday.

Program:

Curtis Mitchell introduced Linda Harrison, CEO of the Promise Regional Medical Center. In her presentation she elaborated on the vision, needs, and goals at the hospital. Recorded here are some the highlights she shared with us.

The hospital was built 33 years ago and consequently is becoming an aging facility with various issues. For example the hot water system needs to be replaced at a cost of $300,000. The new system will have state of the art technology for energy efficiency.

Market forces are newer hospitals that have been built in the surrounding area that are owned by specialty physicians. This means increased competition and patients have more options to select from. Promise plans to meet this challenge by updating their facilities with new medical technologies and equipment to deliver the best care to the patients. Also this will help to attract younger physicians to the hospital staff.

Linda emphasized that the hospital has absolutely stopped the diversion of patients to other hospitals. In the past many of these patients were from smaller communities and the diversions generated criticism from their doctors. The hospital is committed do everything possible to deliver exceptional care to all patients.

The hospital has identified the top medical conditions that patients present to the hospital:

1. Heart disease is the chief cause of death. The hospital has installed a Dual Source CT scan to produce a better picture of the heart and its maladies.

2. Cancer in various forms is being treated with a tomotherapy unit.

3. Diabetes is an increasing disease and the hospital has a new hyperbaric therapy machine for the treatment of wounds, burns, and bites that dont heal.

Linda presented many other initiatives that the hospital is implementing to increase the ability to treat patients and drive the promise of delivering inspired care. One example is the Community Health Fair and Expo recently held on the State Fair Grounds that attracted over 2000 people. A few people were found to have extremely high blood pressure or high sugar levels. Finding these conditions now and starting treatment will prevent serious symptoms or possibly death that could occur in the future.

Rick Mitchell won the 50/50 pot of $30. However he left early so President Al donated the money to the hospital.

Guests:

Shawn and Amy Caley and her client Rowdy guests of Jeff Brewer; Jan Strecker wife of president Al; Mitch Harris guest of Tom Hymer

The Sergeants Playground:

Sergeants John Knipp and his faithful assistant Randy Hendrickson were lacking material. Therefore they resorted to the old playbook of fining people for not having an Ambucs invitation card, people that failed to bring a guest, late arrivals Pam Brooks and Preston Clark.

Adventures of The Round Tuit:

Dave Suhler gave his brief report on the welfare of the Tuit. Steve Harmon paid because his wife Sharon did not ask about the Tuit. Doug Foss and Doyle Ehling both asked about the Tuit while at church, therefore they cared, or at least pretended to care. Dave seemed anxious to get rid of the Tuit and keep it in the Trinity membership, watch out for Dennis Reiser.

To get to the farm go north on Plum to 108th St (Apache Road) and turn east on 108th The farm is 2.5 miles east on 108th.

Program:

Jan Strecker, Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning of USD 308 Hutchinson Schools, presented the details of a strategic plan for the next 5 years. Her stated reason for coming before the club was to gather input and comments concerning the strategic plan. The object is to involve the community in the plan in order to gain consensus and support which is vital to the success of the plan.

Jan gave us some interesting facts about USD 308:

The district employs about 800 people

There are about 1440 high school students

There are about 600 middle school students

There are about 2500 elementary students

The district covers about 14 square miles

The plan includes great emphasis on finding great teachers. This is especially critical because many current teachers are approaching retirement age and filling their positions is number one priority.

NCLB (No Child Left Behind) act presents a challenge to larger school districts in reaching NCLB requirements and standards because of a higher rate of student mobility and diversities. Nevertheless the district is dedicated to meeting the standards of NCLB and exceeding them if possible.

The Strategic Plan includes several key Vision Statements:

Quality Academic Preparation in Core Courses

Quality Preparation for Life and Work in the 21st Century

Quality Staff

Quality Support Systems

Members had the opportunity of providing feedback and input on a one page form with questions and statements about the Strategic Plan.

Our thanks go to Jan for bringing us an interesting program. Its clear that USD 308 is committed to providing great education in Hutchinson, KS.

HUTCHINSON AMBUCS

NEWSLETTER EDITOR: Duke Wiggins

GUESTS:

Shawn Streepe, guest of Scott Potucek; Jill Foss, guest of Doug; Cathy Hanks from the Hutchinson News; Marci Kauffman & Brenda Maxey from TECH, and Lucas Wondra with family and friends, all guests of the club.

FUN WITH THE SERGEANTS:

Sgt Knipp returned today, with no reasonable explanation of why he left us high & dry last week. He didnt even pay a buck for not showing up and actually insulted is stand-in for last week Brad T. Brad cant wait for Big Hat Friday on Friday the 31st. Mr. Knipp better show up well loaded, with funds, that is. Moving on, Eric S paid his normal fine for being late. President Al paid for being out of uniform at last months Regional Meeting in Salina. Rumor is he was headed for the golf course wearing the worlds ugliest hat. This newsletter editor was fined for having the wrong date on the website for last months meeting. This must be fixed by next week. Sheriff Henderson apparently sent the Sgt a text message on his nifty new Blackberry device (when the county doesnt pay for it, you get the very best) and not mentioning AMBUCS. Jeff B bought a fine to announce that Luminous Neon celebrated its 80th anniversary on Weds. When asked, he responded that he remembered nothing of that special day eighty years ago. Ward D bought a fine to remind everyone that Reins of Hope is having the annual fund-raising auction this Saturday at the Fairgrounds. He also (for the same $1) he sponsored a shadow for the day during Disability Supports Mentoring Days and encouraged others to join the effort next year.

TUIT:

Since Tom Hymer carried the TUIT for two weeks in a row, I decided to give him own section in todays newsletter. Pam Brooks bumped into Tom when he did not have the TUIT in his possession, so honest Tom coughed up his $1. He did not have the guts to flaunt the thing around his church last Sunday, probably because he knew we were laying in wait for him. Tom finally got rid of the thing by passing it on to Dave Shuler, at least keeping it within the same church.

AMTRYKE PRESENTATION:

As promised, Lucas Wondra received his AMTRYKE today. His parents, Korey and Leann, along with sister Alisha and brother Evan, shared in Lucass excitement. We will have pictures available on the web site. This was our first look at the new 20 version designed for teens and adults. This is what its all about!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Marci Kauffman and Brenda Maxey did a show & tell on the newly minted Hutchopoly game. The AMBUCS supported this fundraiser by purchasing the spots for Community Chest and Chance. The games will be available for sale to the public starting the week of Oct 20th for $25 each. Great idea for a Christmas gift for family and friends. Al reminded everyone that this is National AMTRYKE month. The club has presented 4 already this month with one more possibility by month end.

PRAYERS AND CONCERNS:

Continue to keep Dennis Reiser and family in you prayers. He and his siblings will be making a decision this week on what the next step will be in his fathers medical journey.

PROGRAM:

Mark Treaster introduced his friend and equipment repair man, Tom Clarke, who also happens to be the coach of the HHS girls basketball team. Tom coached the team for about 10 years, then took a leave of absence for several years concentrate on other areas in his life. When John Ontjes, who took over when Tom left, moved on to coach the HCC Lady Dragons, Tom took the opportunity to get back to his first love, teaching and coaching. This will be his second season back with HHS, and he expects his team to be competitive. Although short compared to competition, they are very quick and handle the ball well.

His philosophy is centered around a family approach, with every member looking to make their teammates better by sharing the opportunities as they arise. He teaches fundamentals and basic floor spacing, then wants his players to think for themselves and take advantage of opportunities as they arise. He sees sports as very me oriented today, as kids model themselves after the latest superstar. He has no superstars on his team, but girls that want to support each other for the good of the team. Their schedule begins in mid-November, so come out and watch the Salthawk girls this season.

DRAWINGS:

The 50/50 drawing went to Doc Power. $21 should by a nice meal before he and Avon go dancing.

The Question of the Day went begging again. Mark Treaster did not know the question, much less the answer.

GUESTS:

John Deardoff, City Manager; Linda Schmidt, Underground Salt Museum; Marisa Honomichl, Cosmosphere

FUN WITH THE SERGEANTS:

Once again, Sgt Knipp was nowhere to be found, so President Al made an executive decision an appointed Brad T Sgt for today. That resulted in a fine for Al for inadequate preparation time for Sgt Thompson. Brad moved on to Jerry Regier, who donated $1 of his hard earned funds from last weekends Rod & Custom Show. It appears that all were pleased with the result and that this will become an annual event. Then, because the downtown merchants benefited from the large crowds last weekend, they got to split with the kids. And Jim Seitnater, yeah, they got him, too. Thanks to all who made this a successful event. Moving on to the financial crises, Dan P, Darren W, and Jay P got to pay for the demise of our retirement funds. Great job of extemporaneous fining Mr. Thompson!! Tom Hymer carried the TUIT last week, at least a part of it. It seems gentle Tom lost the blue & red washer at some point, and somehow it wound up in Sgt Thompsons hands. How did Tom know Al would appoint Brad Sgt for today? Tom brought the TUIT to church and proceeded to parade around the entire building during various activities exposing himself and the TUIT to all AMBUCS present. Thus Dennis R, Jim S, Fred C, Doyle E, and I all had to pay a $1 for his rude behavior. He even got Dan P, whose son Dane plays guitar in the Praise Band, but hasnt officially joined the club yet. Then Tom paid his $1 to pass the TUIT on, except he didnt have it in his possession. Sgt Thompson took his $1 and handed the TUIT back to him for another week.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

We have an AMTRYKE to give away next week. It will be going to a young man named Lucas, whose father made a presentation to our club recently. Lucas has been working since childhood to overcome his disabilities and is currently well on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout. Since a cycling merit badge is required for completion of his Eagle, Lucas has been given special dispensation by the Scouts to pursue a different badge to complete his qualification. Thanks to some quick thinking from Al and Brenda J and her committee, the AMTRYKE naming rights purchased by Matt Bretz at last years TECH auction, will be noted Lucass new AMTRYKE. What a great result a young man with a disability becomes mobile and funds were raised for TECH. Bring your guests to show them what AMBUCS is all about.

PRAYERS AND CONCERNS:

Please continue to keep Dennis, Sonja, and the entire Reiser family in your prayers. Denniss father remains at the KU Medical Center and is showing little improvement. Dennis and his siblings have been taking turns traveling to Kansas City to be with him, which has made it difficult to attend meetings.

PROGRAM:

Our program for this morning was introduced by Randy Henderson. In the upcoming election, citizens of Hutchinson will be asked to extend the current % sales tax for an additional 5 years. The major beneficiaries of the funds raised by this tax are represented today. The City receives 47% to continue to maintain our citys streets. In the past it has been used to fund the required ramps to meet ADA requirement. John Deardoff, our City Manager indicated that without these funds, our street would be in much worse shape, eventually leading to massive expenditures to replace streets that have not been properly maintained. 15% of the funds raised go for direct property tax reduction, which remains a long-term goal of the City. Marisa Honomichl, representing the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, explained that 33% of the funds raised would go to this tourist attraction to expand their educational programs. These programs are the fastest growing part of the Cosmosphere.

Linda Schmidt explained the will be the first time the Kansas Underground Salt Museum will an official beneficiary of the local sales tax. Thanks to the efforts of many entities, the museum is now more financially stable than last winter and spring. The 5% share targeted for the museum will be used to expand the educational programs and to upgrade their marketing efforts. All three encouraged voters to support the continuation of the tax, but the most important thing was to GET OUT and VOTE.

DRAWINGS:

The 50/50 pot went to none other than Tom Hymer, who graciously declined to contribute his $30 to the City.

The Newsletter opportunity drawing went to Steve Harmon, who failed to know that our National AMBUC President Anna Blubaugh lives in Enid, OK and is a member of their downtown chapter. It pays to surf the Net.

FUN WITH THE SERGEANTS:

Our real Sergeants are back and primed for collecting for the kids. As AMBUCS, we are concerned about the political process now taking place. To test this theory, Sgt Knipp asked for a show of hands from those who watched the recent Presidential Debate. Those who didnt respond got to fork over a $1.

A little bird finked on Jeff B, who spent considerable time searching for his car keys this week. After ignoring his wifes suggestion to check to car, he did so, and found the keys in the trunk. That ought to be worth $1. Those fined for being late were Greg W, Eric S, Randle H, and Stan M.

Steve H returned with the TUIT and – guess what – its now BLUE. Those who failed to acknowledge the TUIT were Jeff B, Preston C, Steve C, and Ward D, who each anted up their $1. Add Jeff F and Lee G to the list as they did not make the meeting. More penalties for those who failed to inform their spouse who is the carrier. Both Stan M and Jay P paid for having uninformed wives. Eric S paid for not mentioning the TUIT in his e-mail. The TUIT now resides with Tom H.

PRAYERS & CONCERNS:

Scott Potucek, our esteemed President Elect, ran the meeting in President Als absence. Al and Jan are in Pagosa Springs, CO on vacation. While this was not known at the time of our meeting, they stopped in Ulysses Thursday evening, and when Al awoke on Friday morning, he was feeling quite ill. Jan made him go to the local clinic where it was discovered that Als heart was malfunctioning. They flew he and Jan to the Kansas Heart Institute, where it was discovered the one half of Als heart was not receiving an adequate blood supply due to a severe blockage. The blockage was removed, a stent inserted to keep the blood flowing and kept him over the weekend. He came home on Tuesday and recovering well. No golf yet, but he does plan to be at the meeting on Friday. It pays to listen to your wife, at least some of the time. Also , please continue to keep Fred and Barbara Conner in your prayers. Her mother condition remains the same, and Fred will be having his injury repaired at Wesley Hospital on Wednesday.

We should have an update on Fred on Friday.

PROGRAM:

As the communitys largest convention center, the Grand Prairie is a vital part of Hutchinsons economy. Sandy Harner, the Director of Sales, reported that the convention business is booming in Hutch. Her job is to bid on conventions, and she can be very competitive in the arena. In fact, the only thing holding her back is lack of convention space. Thus, the owner is embarking on an ambitious remodeling project designed to correct this problem. The water park is closing to make room for more convention space and better traffic flow within the building. Sandy concentrates her sales efforts on the large number of associations located within Kansas. Her big selling points are location, her pricing, and the local attractions (including our excellent golf courses. When the remodeling is complete, she will be able to bid on some of the larger conventions, bring more people and money into the community. Jennifer Black is currently the Director of Catering Services, but has been with the Grand Prairie since it reopened under current management. The Grand Slam restaurant has become the gathering place for Hutchinsons influx of young professionals which the community has been targeting for future growth. Thanks to both Sandy and Jennifer for updating us on the Grand Prairie and its plans for the coming year.

FUN WITH THE SERGEANTS:

Sergeants Knipp and Hendrickson came loaded with State Fair screw-ups galore. Noted conservative (meaning cheap guy) Tim Davies tried to save some lunch money at the Fair. With Pronto Pups selling for $3.50 this year, Tim decided to bring his own hot dogs and see if one of the little yellow huts would fix them up for him. And how did that work Tim?? Real Sheriff Randy Henderson had his vehicle towed while at the Fair. No he wasnt parked in the wrong lot. In fact, he had the lot pass hung on his mirror. However, there was one tiny sticker missing from his pass, so he got towed. Its good to know security at the Fair is as tight as always. Duke brought several items from the booth to sell no not product, but clothing, etc left by volunteers. The very nice K-State jacket was claimed by several members, but actually belonged to Amy Chambers. Sgt Knipp will deliver it to her. A green umbrella went unclaimed, and a new looking jean jacket was claimed by Brad Thompson, but a size medium jacket did not fit a size long & tall body. Pam Brooks carried the TUIT during the Fair and generated money from Al S, Ward D, Dan P, and John K. For those of you who dont know, Pam is recovering from foot surgery and was still on crutches as she spoke. She was assigned to a special motorized scooter while working the Elm Grove Estates booth. Stan happened to be on the grounds early one morning and spotted Pam motivating around the grounds. Se could hear him laughing down the pike, then he jumped out of his truck, ran over and gave her a sympathy hug, embarrassing her even more. While he was not fined, Stan received the Curse of the TUIT for his Good Samaritan act.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The promised Big Surprise was announced by President Al. With all the rain and cold that accompanied the Fair this year, we grossed within $326 of last years numbers. Net numbers will not be known until all bills are in, but we should have these figures sometime in October. Jay P announced that the Hutchinson News had requested a Casino for their employee party planned for Saturday, Dec 6th. He started a signup sheet around to get a feeling from the club how many might be willing to give 4 hours to raise a cool $1,000 for the kids. Please put your name on the list as it circulates during upcoming meetings.

PRAYERS & CONCERNS:

Please keep Fred and Barbara Conner in your prayers. Barbaras mother .is under Hospice care and appears to be failing. Their son Tim will be in Hutchinson in early October for what may likely be his last visit with his grandmother.

PROGRAM:

The last time Jim French stood before our club he was running for political office and admitted he was very nervous. This time he comes representing Oxfam America, a world-wide, not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating lasting solutions to poverty and injustice in our world. Originally formed by Anglican monks shortly after WWII, they concentrated on rebuilding North Africa, which was virtually destroyed by clashes between Allied and Axis troops as they fought for control of this strategic area. Today, Oxfam International, a confederation of 13 affiliates including Oxfam America, is at work wherever disaster strikes, bring with it disease, malnutrition, and poverty. They provide immediate relief, such as food, clothing, and medical assistance, but they are unique in working with local governments and volunteers to provide leadership and training to develop infrastructure and economic stability, allowing for the area to become self-sustaining. Currently they have a goal of developing potable drinking water throughout Africa. Jims job is to get the word out. The organization is always seeking funds (they accept no government funding), as well as volunteers to serve in areas of need. If you are interested contact Jim or Mark or the organization directly.

Newsletter 09/12/2008

Meeting date: 9/12/2008

Guests: Travis Ewing, former member and guest of Doug Hoopes.

Orie Ensz, guest of Brenda Janda

Fun with the Sergeants: The sergeants started off with a bang, fining Scott P. twice (no minutes for the board mtg. and no mention of AMBUCS in the Hutch Magazine article on his mother. Next they nailed Brad B. for a publicity tax, as he volunteered to represent the AMBUCS at the fair booth on TV (did anyone see his AMBUC pin?) Then poor Duke.seems he called himself at the ice cream booth on his cell phone and confusion ensued. The sergeants claim that Dukes brain was fried because of all the hard work he has put into this years booth. Finally everyone with no AMBUCS pin was fined a buck!

Brenda Janda had the TUIT, and she really spread the love by fining everyone with no small guest TUIT in their pocket. She then proceeded to fine those who did not ask about the TUIT during the week; Bob, Stan, Tom, Pam, Al, Eric, Preston and the entire Community Service Committee. Finally, with no fanfare, she dropped the TUIT on Pam Brooks.

Al reported the Boards recommendation of supplying AMTRYKES to two Kansas youngsters from the National Wish List, one from Iola and one from Conway Springs.

Jeff Brewer announced the drawing for the last spot on the Tech Golf Tournament Team.

Eric S. reported on the Ice Cream Booth sales to date. With only 2 days of decent weather so far, sales are running behind last year. We hope for good weather for this weekend to help make up the difference. He also announced that the booth received Grand Champion Award for our category. He thanked everyone for stepping up again, as usual. Duke received special accolades for being a superstar with lots of extra effort.

Doug Foss advised that a special thanks was also owed to Travis Ewing and Grainger for once again donating the gloves we use when dipping ice cream.

Chuck Peterson shared a very touching experience he had while collecting money at the booth this week. A mother brought her child through the line to purchase a cone for her. The child was in an ambulatory device, and mother was struggling to find enough money to pay for the cone. Chuck pointed out that we dont charge for children with disabilities, and offered the cone for free. Mom was so touched, she cried. This should remind us all why we do what we do. It is amazing the impact a free dip of ice cream can have!

Program: Curtis Mitchell gave a very informative talk about the hospital name change and the three year plan for expansion. He spoke in detail about the re-branding process, the specific construction plans and a Phase I $120 million fund raising campaign for capital improvements.

Nice job of extemporaneous speaking Curtis, and Darren really owes you big time.
