MEETING: Friday, September 27, 2013 EDITOR: Tom Hymer
TODAYS PROGRAM: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County, presenters John Buckley and Quentin Benning. BBBS was founded in 1904 New York and serves about 63,000 children in twelve countries. In Hutchinson the office is located at 930 N. Main Street. The mission of BBBS is to provide mentors for boys and girls that need a role model in a variety of problem settings. Mentors are often called bigs and the children are called littles. Together bigs and littles are called matches. The matches can take on various forms, school matches, couple matches, and traditional matches in which the big and little meet together once a week for a couple of hours. Their meetings can involve all kinds of activities that include watching a movie, shooting baskets at the Carey Park courts, and going to the YMCA. The results of a match keep kids out of trouble, sets up a line of responsibility for the little, and improves learning and improved behavior in school. John and Quentin are case managers to lead, assist, and create matches. Their jobs include background checks, matching a little with a big, weekly contact and assessment progress, and documenting their work. Both of them have been on the job for about 9 months and are making a super contribution in Reno County. Currently there are 78 kids waiting for a big, most of them are boys. Call John or Quentin at 620-662-8161 to ask about being a big or to ask any questions.
CLUB ENFORCEMENT: There were no guests today. Remember what Sergeant Brad says, bring guests or pay! There was a report on the Golf teams, apparently they finished playing, end of report. Ward Davis and Tom Hymer were both fined for failing to produce last meetings newsletter. Guy Gann learned that complaining about the speed of the ceiling fans has a price. Paul Brown and Duke Wiggins were almost late, whatever that means, and Craig Johnson was accused of throwing them under the bus, figuratively of course, and in reality all were fined. Strange but true, the money in the toilet consisted of 2 twenty dollar bills. And a thorough search of the financial records for last 33 years reveals this has heretofore never happened. Finally the membership was treated with Kansas City Chiefs trivia. Actually that was kinda entertaining, as it included the Neil Smith rule that a defensive lineman cannot flinch in order to cause a false start by the offence.
50/50 DRAWING: Stan Macgirvin won the 50/50 pot of $22 and donated his winnings to BBBS. NEWSLETTER DRAWING, hmmm, apparently the editor was distracted and doesnt know. Ka-Ching. For $25 the Newsletter question for the meeting on October 4th is What is the Neil Smith rule?
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Doug Foss wants to remind the Community Service Members of their meeting on this coming Friday October 4th at 6:30AM.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS: Program manager Jeff Roberson will speak this Friday to cover what he learned this past weekend at the Ambucs Regional meeting.
