PROGRAM: Darren Wicks introduced Karen Washburn with the Childrens Emergency Shelter Home. Karen has been a board member since 2000. She has served as Director and Treasurer. It operates with a volunteer board of 10 and a staff of 6. They are currently licensed by KDHE for 7 children birth through age 13. If needed, additional staff can be brought in if there are additional children to be sheltered. They did have several children in the shelter over Christmas. A 2 year old toddler was found walking alone wearing only a diaper on Christmas day and was taken to the shelter. The shelter receives some money from the United Way as a UW agency. They are a 501c3 non-profit operation. Several local business and churches give funds and items to the shelter to help with expenses. The shelter operates in an older two-story house in an undisclosed location. Several unexpected expenses such as a new furnace, electrical, plumbing and structural problems have taxed their funds this year. They served 91 children last year up 25% from the previous year.
