HUTCHINSON CHAPTER OF AMBUCS
GUESTS: Irene Hart, City of Hutchinson Housing Program Manager
THE SERGEANTS SLAUGHTER: There is a new Sherriff (Bob Bush) and Deputy (Randy Hendrickson) in the town club this month and they have proclaimed their time as Octoberfest, which an AMBUCS translation means get out your cash and put it in the toilet. They began their collecting with the newsletter editor for publishing some vague information a couple weeks back. After I threw another AMBUC under the bus, they fined the rest of my table for sitting with me. My apologies to Brad Thompson, Stan Macgirvin, Mark Treaster and Curtis Mitchell, but by the way they were going, they were going to get your cash anyway. Dennis Bockenstedt was fined for not meeting our guest speaker at the door. Darren Wicks for ratting out Dan Power as last weeks program host. Dan Power for last weeks program cancelling, and Dane Power guilty by association. All AMBUCS paid a fine for the National Day of Mourning, the Americans losing the Ryder Cup to the Europeans. Craig Johnson probably paid twice, from Ann Bush for not repairing Jacks Saxophone fast enough and from Bob for repairing it too fast. Curtis Mitchell was hit for no AMBUC Pin and not mentioning AMBUCS in his recent newspaper article. Larry Sloan and Brenda Janda were nailed for not getting any press in the newspaper. Dennis B., Dean Brigman & Jim Seitnater were fined for all the Streets that are torn up for Construction within the city of Hutchinson. Sherriff Bush finished his Patrol with a mandatory $1.00 vote into a pot to vote on whom everyone thought would win this Saturdays Football Game between the Kansas State Wildcats and the Kansas Jayhawks. Bob reported that $72 was raised in the vote and KSU was the winner in the voting.
THE PRESIDENTS REIGN: President Wicks reported on the progress of the T-Shirt committee. We cannot continue to produce the team customized shirts due to the costs associated with that type of setup. The committee is continuing to look at the best options for going back to the American Legion with what we determine would be a profitable venture for both them and the AMBUCS. All members are invited to the next meeting to discuss additional thoughts and ideas, which will take place Friday October 19th at 6:15 a.m. Next Friday October 12th at 6:15 a.m. will be the AMBUCS Board Meeting.
CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS: Sign-up sheet for the Membership Drive Steak Fry is being passed around.
Sign-up sheet for the next Casino Night for Holy Cross (Sat. Oct. 13th) is being passed around.
Jim Jacobs thanked all the members for their work at the Ice Cream Booth. Three tubs of Ice Cream remain (2-Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough & 1-Caramel Swirl) for $25 per tub. Contact Jim if you are interested.
Doug Foss reported that a mother of a recent AMTRYKE recipient donated $100 to the AMBUCS while visiting the Ice Cream Booth during the Kansas State Fair, thanking us again for doing what we do for the children we help.
PROGRAM: Irene Hart, Housing Program Manager for the City of Hutchinson, has been in this position with the city for about 6 months. Irene applauds the Hutchinson City Council for addressing the housing issue in the city. The City of Hutchinson conducted a housing condition survey in a timeframe spanning from 2001 to 2009. That survey told officials that the average year of housing built within the city was 1954, which in comparison to other similar communities that have a average year of 1966, tells them that they are dealing with many older structures than other communities. Over that time span of the survey, of the 17,000 properties reviewed, nearly one-third (approx. 5000) of the properties declined in quality and were measurably deteriorated. Focus areas were established generally south of 11th Avenue in the Allen & Avenue A school district boundaries for grant applications to try to assist broader but concentrated areas for improvements. From this survey the Housing Authority developed a strategic plan which developed a property maintenance code, established a Housing Department within the City of Hutchinson and established a Community Housing Trust Fund. With Global, Federal, State and Local economies effecting housing, the Housing department is continuing to look at ways to add housing for a work force that is not currently living within the community as well as maintain the deteriorating housing with the brush up Hutch and neighborhood revitalization programs.
