MEETING: Friday January 21, 2011 EDITOR: Tom Hymer
WELCOME GUESTS: Darren Wicks introduced his guest and todays program presenter Sam Butterfield.
FUN & FUND RAISING SERGEANTS: Missing the bell that starts the meeting were Jim Kicklighter and Jeff Roberson and were duly fined for their tardiness. New taxman and no mercy Dennis fined Jeff Brewer for winning the 50/50 pot last week. Steve Harmon paid for early departure. Curtis Mitchell, part time basketball referee who dared to foul-out the sergeants daughter, now knows Dennis will use any tactic to raise money for the kids. Terry Brigman, Jim Jacobs, and Randy Hendrickson now understand perfectly that it costs to have a birthday. Only Terry Brigman wore a red shirt in honor of the HCC Dragons and todays program Sam Butterfield, the rest of us blokes had to pay a dollar. PROGRAM: Program Manager Darren Wicks introduced Sam Butterfield, Hutchinson Community College basketball coach during the 1960s and served as Athletic Director for another 20 more years. Sam brought an interesting program with stories of his experiences and the changes that have develop in college athletics. The following lines are some of what he had to say. There were games when there were no seats available in the arena. At most games spectators packed the Sports Arena. The players were local athletes from around Kansas which their families and friends could easily attend. Nowadays with many players from out of state the result is fewer people attending the games. When traveling the teams would have sit down meals. Now the custom is to buy take out meals in boxes or bags and eat on the bus while on the way to the destination.
Butterfield was honored in November 2010 night before the final game of the 2010 Quarterback Classic as the Sports Arena floor was named in his honor and will now be known as Sam Butterfield Court. The words Sam Butterfield Court were placed on the southwest and northeast corners of the Arena court. Nearly all of Butterfields family and more than 20 players whom he coached returned for the ceremony on Saturday at the Sports Arena.
