While Rick received a dissertation for not being a Big Hat member, the other Big Hat members sitting at the tables collected from all those members who have were not yet Big Hat members. Duke Wiggins was fined for not delegating the prayer and pledge. Tim Davies was fined for waiting outside for our guest speakers while they were already here. Randy Hendrickson was fined for not being here last week but his guest Doug Wycoff was. I along with several others were fined for eating ahead of the Sergeants. Brad also commented that he didnt like the newsletter questions. We do need another newsletter editor Brad! Duke Wiggins paid for Tim Davies having a program and saving Dukes life.

Plan now to attend Fall Conference for Great Plains Region October 8-10 in Rogers, Arkansas.

Program: Tim Davies introduced Tonya Gehring, Docent Supervisor and Myron Marcotte, Mine Manager for the Kansas Underground Salt Museum. Tonya has been with KUSM just over 3 years and Myron has held almost every job available over his 37 year tenure. Mining of Salt in Hutchinson began at Carey Salt in 1923. Tonya said attendance is averaging over 300 per day weekdays with as many as 595 last Saturday touring the museum. She has seen an increase in bus tours and stay-over guests with lower fuel costs although they have lost some school tours due to budget cuts. Their next Very Brady Murder in the Mine mystery dinner theater is sold out. Tickets are on sale now for a special mine tour by Myron on August 13th to see and sample the most beautiful red and clear salt found in the mine to date and to hear the history and stories from someone who really knows. The train ride acquired from the Hutchinson Zoo is currently being converted to electric drive and the track is being laid in the mine for a new addition opening by Christmas 2010. If you are looking for a break from the Kansas heat try a trip down 650 feet where the temperature is 68 degrees year round. You can also book groups above and below ground for meetings, class or Christmas parties. Myron said that while the salt museum is doing much better the Reno County Historical Museum is struggling. Please consider becoming a member of the Reno County Historical Society which supports one or both of these great places. They are always looking for docents or volunteers to work at either location.

50/50 Drawing: Duke Wiggins won $30 and donated it to the Reno County Historical Society.

Newsletter Drawing: Vern Powers did not know the answer (but should have) to the question: When was the first edition of The Hutchinson News printed and where? It was printed July 4, 1872 on a Washington style hand-press that was delivered on the first Santa Fe train just 8 days earlier. 5,000 four-page copies were printed in the back of a bookstore near First and Main streets by the first editor Houston Whiteside. The purse increases to $25. This weeks question: In the movie The Wizard of Oz, what was the movie name of the old cranky neighbor woman on the bicycle that Toto bit? She became the Wicked Witch of the West in Dorothys dream. What was her second claim to fame following the movie?
