PROGRAM: Tom Stanton introduced Sondra Borth, with Communities that Care. The Communities that Care program began with a grant five years ago in Hutchinson from the University of Washington. Hutchinson was one of only 12 cities in the test study. The CTC program brings concerned parents and community leaders together to help prevent the use of drugs through positive activities and information. The program focuses on being proactive to the risk factors rather than reactive to the problems. A change in prevention strategies is now used because the old scare tactics do not work with todays kids. Another change was to not educate the kids on drugs and their effects because the kids were learning new drug information that they didnt even know. Preliminary results are just now coming in from the 12 communities participating in the CTC program which shows less drug and alcohol use in those communities participating in the program. Sondra also told us about a new computer program available called Parenting Wisely that parents and their children can complete together on their home computer. There is still a continued need for adults who are willing to spend 1 hour reading to children in area schools. Sondra also handed out a flyer about A Dose of Prevention a free dinner/seminar that will be held Tuesday, April 8 at HCC Shears Technology Center for concerned parents and community leaders about medicine abuse by teens. Call Sondra at 665-4419 for more information or to RSVP for the seminar. You can also reach her at her office at Lincoln Elementary School.
