PROGRAM:  Kathy Hanks introduced Lisa Orrison, Program Coordinator for Communities That Care.  Lisa has headed the program for 4 years.  Hutchinson was one of 24 cities chosen in 2003 by the University of Washington to participate in a youth development study.  The CTC is a coalition-based community prevention system that uses a public health approach to prevent youth problem behaviors including underage drinking, violence, tobacco use, delinquency, substance abuse and school dropout.  Every two years students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 take a CTC Youth Survey which help identify high risk and low protective factors which help guide the board in determining the best research based interventions.  CTC also places mentors in the schools with students to help them with social skills and to have someone to talk about issues they may be encountering.  Their newest program is a suicide prevention coalition.  They are selling tickets for a movie that they are trying to bring to Hutchinson called Suicide, The Ripple Effect.  If they sell a minimum of 60 tickets it will be shown at an evening showing at the Mall Theatre on April 30th.  If you are interested in being a mentor please contact the CTC at 620-614-4012.  There is also an online form at www.ctcreno.org .
