PROGRAM: Harley Macklin introduced Pastor Tim Carey, Emanuel Lutheran Church. Tim grew up in the Chicagoland area. After 4 years of college and 4 years of graduate school he wanted to pastor a rural church. He was pasturing a church in Eureka, Kansas and then Northwest Missouri before coming to Hutchinson. He has pastured Emanuel Lutheran here for 17 years. He also has 3 children living here and now 5 grandchildren. Tim began by praising some behind the scenes activities here in Hutchinson. First, our clubs efforts operating the ice cream booth at the state fair for 30 years and touching so many lives with the fruits of our labor in our community. Second, the Hutchinson Public Library for their many diverse services to the community of which is too many to list here. Third, the education of our youth which helps to set the path for excellence in life. One example is the Early Education Center who utilizes some of the classroom space at the church for their 3 year old pre-school program. While Tim sees so many positives in Hutchinson he also encounters the daily struggles such as 30 people who contacted the church for assistance during a recent week. This time of year is particularly bad for poverty, drugs and mental problems. Statistically one in four people has issues with one in nineteen having major mental problems. On the average 100 homes in Hutchinson has their water turned off each month due to non-payment. These were just a few of the sad stories that he told. All entities and individuals of our city must band together to solve these problems. There are many working behind the scenes to solve these and other problems and there is always more that needs to be done. Think about it!
