BIG HAT FRIDAY – WEAR YOUR HATS OR BE FINED BY BRAD T

GUESTS: Charlie Dixon, Director of Camp Hope

SERGEANTS’ CORNER:

Sgt Knipp picked Coby Davis to be his deputy and carry the toilet. Since Dorinda missed the meeting, there was no presidential fine collected. They fined Doyle Ehling for leaving early last week, missing his opportunity to win the newsletter pot. Then he fined everyone who did not go to the political debate earlier this week. Andrew Parr paid a smart-ass fine. Then he rang out.

PROGRAM:

It has been said that having a job that you really love makes work fun. Charlie Dixon loves his job and loves his clients, kids with cancer, who spend a week in June being “normal”, being just like the other campers. One camper put it this way “Camp Hope makes me so happy because I can escape everything about cancer. I love Camp Hope!”. Charlie himself suffered a debilitating accident and depends on a cane. But this doesn’t stop him from participating in the kids activities.Charlie is alsoan ordained Baptist minister. He considers himself a lucky man.

For the last 18 months, Camp Hope has been”free standing”, no longer receiving support from the AmericanCancerSociety. They are currently supporting research instead of activities like camps. He is the only paid staff. It took 104 volunteers to support 77 campers this year. They have 2 doctors and medical specialists on hand during the week. He creditsGreat Bend and Barton County for their support with the upkeep of Camp Aldrich.

DRAWINGS:

The Lucky Aces drawing went to Darren Wicks, who donated his $5 to the camp, as well pledging $50 from his own pocket. The Newsletter question was answered by Guy Gann, who donated the $10 to the camp. The Newsletter question for Friday, the 29th is ” How many campers and how many volunteer staff were part of this year’s camp?”
