GUESTS
Sara Holbert of Cares, Inc. and Sheri Galliart of Graber Elementary
TUIT REPORT
Don Grossardt had a long list of No-shows before finding someone present who did not ask
about the Tuit including: Debbie Cowl, Bill Long, Pat Fallon and Eric Steinle. The following
AMBUCS didnt ask, but in all fairness were present only by proxy: Scott Saylor, Steve Conard,
Preston Clark and Larry Sloan (and since fairness has nothing to do with it, they were relieved of
their cash.) Donnie G. then presented the round rascal to a fellow ledger dweller,
Ron Soellner.
PROGRAM:
Sara Holbert was our invited guest speaker from Cares, Inc. Considering that she drove from Concordia to be present at our 7:00 A.M. meeting and she was on time, we thank her greatly and wish that her promptness could be grafted onto the membership. Cares, Inc. trains and places professional therapy dogs. Since 1994, approximately 500 dogs have been prepared for service in all 50 states and several foreign nations. The dogs have a calming effect on special needs children and are trained to complete multiple functions. One of the unique abilities of the dogs is to detect diabetic alerts. Every person has an individual odor much like a fingerprint. When the dog detects a variance in that odor, it notifies the handler of the need for action.
Sheri Galliart, special education teacher at Graber Elementary, has received one of the dogs from the Cares, Inc. program with the assistance of the Hutchinson chapter of AMBUCS. Ms. Galliart appeared with her therapy dog, Trixie, a golden retriever. The dog is used in class to coax the children to complete activities they would not be otherwise inclined to do. Many times, the dog is able to motivate the disabled children to a greater degree than other persons around them. An example of the dogs usefulness involved an autistic child who spoke to the dog and counted to three when previously there had been no recognizable words. Ms. Galliart thanked AMBUCS for its assistance in the purchase of Trixie and for the horizontal handlebars to modify an AMTRYKE already in use at the school.
