PROGRAM:
Terry Winkle, the head athletic trainer for HCC, talked to us about the impact the new football field at Gowans Stadium has on his profession. The new Gridiron is called Field Turf. Unlike Astroturf, this has real grass with tons of small pieces of rubber spread across it. It is about 4 inches thick and is spongy instead of hard. It requires less maintenance than a regular field. The football team can practice and play on it instead of needing 2 fields.
What has changed injury-wise is the need to watch closely to see that the athletes stay hydrated because the field absorbs alot more heat than regular turf. Another thing they see more frequently is foreign bodies in the eye when the ball hits the turf because the rubber particles sometimes become airborne.
